“The code execution cannot proceed because libgtk-win32-2.0-0.dll was not found.” If Windows reports that libgtk-win32-2.0-0.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, the affected application has usually lost part of its GTK+ 2 runtime.
The 60-second answer
libgtk-win32-2.0-0.dll is a Windows library from GTK+ 2, an older graphical user-interface toolkit. It is not a Windows system file and it is not supplied by Microsoft Visual C++ or DirectX.
The correct repair is to identify the application showing the error and repair or reinstall that application from its official installer. Older GIMP, Pidgin, Dia, Sylpheed, Tomboy, GTK# and Mono software, plus some engineering programs, may carry this library in their own folders.
Do not download a random copy into C:WindowsSystem32. GTK+ applications normally need a matching group of libraries, including related GTK, GLib, Pango, Cairo and ATK files. Replacing one DLL often exposes another missing or incompatible dependency.

What causes the error
The filename identifies a GTK+ 2 Windows library, but it does not identify one unique application, version, publisher or CPU architecture. The most common causes are:
| What happened | Why the error appears | Best repair |
|---|---|---|
| The application was reinstalled incompletely | Its private GTK runtime was never restored | Repair or reinstall the application |
| Antivirus quarantined the file | Windows can no longer load the runtime | Check Protection History, then reinstall if needed |
| The program folder was moved or copied | The launcher can no longer find sibling libraries or data | Restore the original folder structure |
| A 32-bit and 64-bit runtime were mixed | Windows rejects the incompatible binary | Install the runtime matching the application |
Several GTK versions are on PATH |
The loader finds an incompatible dependency first | Remove conflicting paths and restore the complete runtime |
| The DLL exists but another dependency is broken | The loader reports a procedure or module error | Reinstall the whole runtime, not just this file |
| The application files are damaged | One or more libraries are incomplete | Verify, repair or reinstall the program |
GTK+ 2 is obsolete, so current GTK documentation may not provide a supported modern installer for this legacy library. Historical GTK+ 2 packages exist, but they should only be used when the application publisher specifically requires them and the package comes from a verifiable official archive.
Fix 1: Identify and repair the affected application
Start here. This fixes the largest number of libgtk-win32-2.0-0.dll failures and restores the DLLs that belong together.
Find the program
- Read the title bar and full text of the error dialog.
- Check the shortcut that launched it. Right-click the shortcut, select Properties, and inspect Target.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager if the program briefly appears before closing.
- In File Explorer, search the installation folders for
libgtk-win32-2.0-0.dll. - Note the parent folder. The application name in that path usually identifies the owner.
Do not assume the file belongs to Windows merely because the error appears in Windows.
Repair it
Use the repair function if the program provides one:
- Press Win+I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu and choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair and test the program.
- If Repair does not exist or does not work, uninstall the program.
- Download the installer from the application publisher or use the program’s official launcher.
- Install it into the original location, or use a clean new folder.
- Restart Windows and launch the program from its normal shortcut.
For a game, open its launcher and use Verify files, Verify integrity, Repair, or Scan and repair. The exact label varies by launcher. This restores the complete installation instead of copying one library by hand.
The repair worked if the application opens normally and the error does not return. If the message changes to “specified procedure could not be found,” Windows may now be finding the wrong copy or an incompatible dependency. Continue with the runtime checks below.

Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove an old or unsigned application library. A quarantine event is especially plausible if the program worked until a security scan, update or cleanup operation.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event associated with the affected application or
libgtk-win32-2.0-0.dll. - Confirm the file path before taking action.
Restore a file only when you recognize the application, trust its installer and can verify that the installation is legitimate. Microsoft warns that restoring a detected threat can cause Defender to detect it again. If the file is genuinely safe, use the available Allow on device action only after independent verification.
A safer approach is usually to reinstall the complete application after confirming the quarantine event. That restores the DLL and its matching dependencies from the original installer.
If the file disappears again, do not keep restoring it repeatedly. Run a full security scan and contact the application publisher. A missing DLL does not prove malware, and a present DLL does not prove that the installation is healthy.
Fix 3: Check 32-bit versus 64-bit compatibility
The filename alone does not reveal whether a particular copy is 32-bit or 64-bit. A 32-bit program needs a compatible 32-bit GTK+ runtime. A 64-bit program needs a compatible 64-bit build.

To check the application:
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading and select Select columns.
- Enable Platform, if your Windows version provides that column.
- Check the application while it is running.
You can also inspect the publisher’s system requirements or installer name. Older GTK-based Windows applications are often 32-bit, but do not assume that every program using GTK+ 2 is the same.
Do not copy a 64-bit DLL into a 32-bit application folder, or a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit application folder. Do not combine files from different GTK packages. Reinstall the architecture required by the application, including its related runtime files.
The architecture repair worked when the application starts without 0xc000007b, “not designed to run on Windows,” or DLL loader errors.
Fix 4: Restore the application’s runtime path
Windows normally searches the application directory and other locations according to its DLL search rules. Microsoft documents the search behavior in its dynamic-link library search order.
GTK-based applications may depend on a private bin directory and nearby runtime data. A Pidgin installation, for instance, historically stored GTK libraries beneath its own application directory rather than treating them as Windows components.
Check the following:
- Open the application’s shortcut properties.
- Confirm that Target points to the current executable.
- Select Start in and confirm that it points to the application’s real folder.
- Check whether the application was moved from another drive or copied from a portable archive.
- Look for the application’s
bindirectory and related GTK libraries. - If the program uses a launcher, start it from that launcher rather than running the executable directly.
- If you set a custom
PATH, temporarily remove old GTK entries from the project or launcher configuration.
For a development project, inspect its working directory, platform target and native DLL search path. A Visual Studio project can fail even when the DLL exists if the working directory does not include the correct GTK runtime.
If restoring the path changes the error from “not found” to “specified procedure could not be found,” the loader is likely reaching an incompatible library. Reinstall the complete matching runtime and remove duplicate GTK paths.
Fix 5: Reinstall GTK# or Mono components for development projects
If the error appears as:
System.DllNotFoundException: Unable to load DLL 'libgtk-win32-2.0-0.dll'
the program may be a GTK# or Mono application rather than a normal desktop installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Close Visual Studio and the application.
- Identify the project’s target platform: x86, x64 or Any CPU.
- Check the project documentation for the required GTK# and Mono generation.
- Uninstall mismatched GTK# or Mono packages if the project documentation instructs you to do so.
- Install the exact packages required by that project from its publisher or documented official source.
- Confirm that the native GTK DLL directory is available to the application at runtime.
- Rebuild the project and run it from the expected working directory.
Do not use a modern GTK build as a drop-in replacement for a GTK+ 2 application without confirming compatibility. The managed bindings, native libraries and runtime data must match.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
Because this is a third-party GTK library, Windows repair tools normally will not restore it. Use them when you also have broader Windows problems, such as broken built-in applications, failed updates or damaged protected system files.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Microsoft provides further guidance for DISM and System File Checker. These commands repair the Windows component store and protected Windows files, not the private GTK runtime bundled with an application.
Manually hunting through repair logs and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it found; repairs are performed by the full version, but reinstalling the affected GTK application remains the definitive fix for this DLL.

Fix 7: Update drivers only when the symptom points there
Graphics driver problems can cause a GTK application to crash, but they do not normally install or restore libgtk-win32-2.0-0.dll. Consider driver repair only if the application starts and then crashes with display errors, rendering failures or broader graphics problems.
To update a driver manually:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
You can also select Windows Update in Settings, open Advanced options, then Optional updates and Driver updates when available. Do not remove a working driver simply because this DLL is missing.
Manually identifying the correct driver across multiple hardware revisions can be tedious. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; installation is handled by the full version, and it is not a substitute for reinstalling the application that owns this DLL.
Fix 8: Use System Restore for a recent, identifiable change
System Restore is useful when the application worked before a known driver, cleanup or software change.
- Press Win+R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore and allow Windows to restart.
Use this only when a suitable restore point predates the problem. It is not a replacement for reinstalling a damaged application.

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft documents its purpose and syntax in the regsvr32 command reference. GTK runtime libraries are ordinarily loaded by the application and are not repaired by registering them.

Avoid these common mistakes:
- Downloading a standalone DLL from a random DLL website
- Copying it into
System32orSysWOW64 - Mixing 32-bit and 64-bit GTK files
- Combining libraries from different GTK distributions
- Installing Visual C++ or DirectX as a guess
- Copying only this DLL and ignoring its dependencies
A random download may contain malware, the wrong architecture or an incompatible build. It may also make the error harder to diagnose. Use the affected application’s official installer, its official launcher, or a clearly documented official runtime archive required by that application.
Match the error wording to the likely cause
- “libgtk-win32-2.0-0.dll was not found”: The application directory is missing the library or Windows cannot reach its runtime path.
- “Module cannot be found”: The named DLL or one of its dependencies is unavailable.
- “The specified procedure could not be found”: Windows found a DLL, but it or a related dependency is from an incompatible build.
- “Not designed to run on Windows”: The file may be damaged or incompatible.
0xc000007b: Suspect architecture mismatch or a damaged dependency.- Only Visual Studio fails: Check the project platform target, working directory and GTK# native search path.
- The error began after an antivirus alert: Check Protection History before reinstalling.
FAQ
Is libgtk-win32-2.0-0.dll a Windows file?
No. It is a GTK+ 2 library used by third-party applications. It is not a normal Windows component and does not belong in System32 as a general repair.
Is it part of Microsoft Visual C++?
No. Visual C++ Redistributables do not provide this GTK+ DLL.
Which program installed it?
The filename does not identify a unique program. Find the application named in the error or locate the DLL’s parent folder. Older GTK-based applications, GTK# projects and engineering software can bundle it.
Can I fix the error by downloading just this DLL?
Usually not. GTK applications commonly need several matching libraries and runtime data. Repairing or reinstalling the complete application is safer.
Should I run regsvr32 libgtk-win32-2.0-0.dll?
No, not normally. This is an ordinary runtime library, not generally a COM component that needs registration.

What if the program is too old to reinstall?
Look first for the publisher’s original installer or a verifiable official archive. Install the runtime generation and architecture documented for that application. If no compatible source remains, contact the publisher with the exact error, application version, Windows architecture and installation path.
