gwspeed64.dll Missing: Rebuild the GoldWave Install Correctly

Length8 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team

gwspeed64.dll is a genuine GoldWave application file, not a Windows or Microsoft system DLL. If GoldWave reports that it is missing, corrupt, or could not be loaded, reinstall GoldWave from GoldWave Inc. into its existing installation folder rather than downloading the DLL separately.

What this file actually does

GoldWave’s official package contents list GWSpeed64.dll as part of the desktop application and describe it as “Accelerated multithreaded code.” The file normally sits beside GoldWave.exe in the GoldWave installation directory, commonly:

C:Program FilesGoldWave

It does not belong in either of these Windows folders:

C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64

The 64 strongly suggests that it is the 64-bit accelerated GoldWave component. However, GoldWave does not publish a complete public metadata table for every historical copy of the DLL, so do not replace it with a file from a different release.

GoldWave is the identifiable parent application. There is no reliable evidence that this file ships with Windows, Microsoft Visual C++ components, DirectX, .NET, a Windows driver, or a separate game.

Match the symptom to the likely cause

Symptom Most likely cause Best first action
“gwspeed64.dll is missing” or “was not found” Incomplete installation, failed update, deletion, or quarantine Reinstall GoldWave over the existing folder
“The specified module could not be found” The DLL is missing, or one of its dependencies is unavailable Check the GoldWave folder, then reinstall
“The code execution cannot proceed” Incorrect, damaged, or mismatched GoldWave files Install the correct GoldWave release
“Not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error” Wrong architecture, mixed versions, or corruption Remove mixed files and reinstall GoldWave
GoldWave worked until a security scan Antivirus or endpoint protection quarantined the file Inspect Protection history
The file returns, then disappears Recurring quarantine, disk problems, or malware Review security events and scan the computer
A different DLL is named after repair A separate dependency is now failing Troubleshoot that named dependency, not GWSpeed64.dll

Fix 1: Reinstall GoldWave over the existing installation

This is the safest and most likely solution because the file is installed with GoldWave.

  1. Close GoldWave.
  2. Open the official GoldWave release page.
  3. Download the release that matches your version of Windows.
  4. Open File Explorer and check the current GoldWave folder. Look for GoldWave.exe.
  5. Note the folder path before starting the installer.
  6. Run the GoldWave self-installing download.
  7. If Windows asks for permission, select Yes.
  8. When asked for the destination folder, select the existing GoldWave folder rather than creating a separate copy.
  9. Complete the installation.
  10. Start GoldWave from the repaired installation.

GoldWave’s installation instructions recommend closing the application before installing. Its FAQ also recommends installing the latest self-installing file into the existing GoldWave folder so older files are replaced while settings and presets are retained.

Confirm that the repair worked

Return to the installation folder and confirm that both files are present:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
GoldWave.exe
GWSpeed64.dll

Then launch GoldWave. If it opens without the loader message, the repair is complete.

If the installer creates a second GoldWave folder, do not copy individual DLLs between the two installations. Uninstall the damaged copy, restart Windows, and reinstall GoldWave from the official installer into one consistent folder. Back up any custom settings or presets first if they are important to you.

Fix 2: Check whether antivirus removed the file

Security software can quarantine a legitimate application file, especially when the installation was incomplete or came from an unofficial source. There is no established public antivirus campaign specific to GWSpeed64.dll, so verify the event instead of automatically allowing the file.

  1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Expand any detection that names GWSpeed64.dll or the GoldWave installation folder.
  5. Review the detection name and original file path.
  6. If the file came from the genuine GoldWave installer, check the security vendor’s classification before taking action.
  7. Restore or allow it only when you can verify the source.
  8. Reinstall GoldWave from GoldWave Inc. if the source is uncertain.

Microsoft explains Protection History and warns that restoring a quarantined file can cause Microsoft Defender to detect it again. Do not restore a file merely because its name matches the error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the file repeatedly disappears, check Windows Security again after reinstalling. On a managed computer, also ask your administrator to review endpoint protection, application-control rules, and controlled-folder access.

Fix 3: Use the correct GoldWave architecture and release

A GoldWave installation must match the operating system and should not contain DLLs borrowed from another release.

The current GoldWave download page lists version 7.08 for Windows, released August 25, 2026, and requires 64-bit Windows 10 or later. The vendor also lists legacy releases, including v6.80 for older Windows 7 or Windows 8 systems and v5.70 for XP, Vista, or 32-bit systems.

To check your Windows architecture:

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select About.
  4. Read System type.

On Windows 11 and current Windows 10 systems, use the current compatible GoldWave release. If the computer runs a 32-bit edition of Windows or an older Windows version, use the legacy release identified by GoldWave rather than forcing the newest installer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that every historical GoldWave version used an identical GWSpeed64.dll. A manual replacement can produce an entry-point error or a “not designed to run on Windows” message even when the filename is correct.

Fix 4: Check the installation path and duplicate copies

A shortcut may point to an old or partially removed GoldWave installation.

  1. Right-click the GoldWave shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Read the path shown in Target.
  4. Select Open File Location.
  5. Confirm that the folder contains GoldWave.exe and GWSpeed64.dll.
  6. Search File Explorer for GoldWave.exe.
  7. If multiple installations exist, identify which one the shortcut launches.
  8. Repair or remove the unintended copy, then create a shortcut to the working installation.

If GWSpeed64.dll exists beside the executable but GoldWave still reports that the specified module cannot be found, another dependency may be missing. Reinstall GoldWave first. If the message names a different DLL afterward, investigate that file specifically.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when Windows is also damaged

SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components and the Windows component store. They normally do not restore a third-party GoldWave DLL, so use them as secondary steps when other Windows applications are also failing or Windows reports broader corruption.

  6. Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Reinstall GoldWave if GWSpeed64.dll is still missing.

Microsoft documents DISM and System File Checker repair. A successful SFC result does not prove that the GoldWave installation is intact.

Repeatedly hunting through repair commands without knowing which Windows component changed can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for Windows issues and show what needs attention; its repair features require the full version, and reinstalling GoldWave remains the definitive fix for this application file.

Fix 6: Update drivers only when the wider symptom points there

GoldWave’s troubleshooter acknowledges that driver problems can affect the application, but a driver update is not the primary repair for a missing GWSpeed64.dll.

Consider this step when GoldWave also crashes during audio playback, Windows has audio-device errors, or other multimedia applications fail.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  4. Right-click the affected audio device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Select Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
  8. Test GoldWave again.

You can also check the computer or audio-device manufacturer’s official support page for a Windows-compatible driver. Avoid replacing the GoldWave DLL while trying to solve an unrelated audio-driver problem.

Manually checking several hardware vendors and comparing driver versions is tedious when multiple devices are involved. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show the results; driver installation through its full version is optional, and it does not replace the need to reinstall GoldWave for a missing application file.

Fix 7: Consider malware, disk damage, or System Restore

If the file is repeatedly altered or deleted, scan the computer with updated security software and check available backups. Also investigate disk-health warnings or filesystem errors, particularly if other files are disappearing.

System Restore is reasonable when the failure began immediately after a recent application, driver, or system change:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Enter:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select a restore point from before the problem began.
  3. Select Scan for affected programs.
  4. Review the changes.
  5. Complete the restore and restart Windows.
  6. Reinstall or update GoldWave afterward if necessary.

Microsoft provides System Restore instructions. System Restore is not a substitute for an official GoldWave installation and may not restore the application file itself.

What not to do

Do not download the DLL separately

Random DLL download sites can provide malware, an altered file, the wrong architecture, or a copy from an incompatible GoldWave release. A manually downloaded file also leaves the original installation problem unresolved.

Use GoldWave’s official release page and installer. If security software objects to the file, verify the installer and detection rather than downloading a replacement from an unrelated source.

Do not copy it into a Windows system folder

GWSpeed64.dll is application-private. Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 can create version conflicts and does not repair the GoldWave installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not run regsvr32

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. GoldWave describes GWSpeed64.dll as accelerated code, not a COM or ActiveX component. Running this command is not a repair step:

regsvr32 GWSpeed64.dll

It may simply produce an entry-point error. Microsoft documents the purpose and syntax of regsvr32.

FAQ

Is gwspeed64.dll a Microsoft file?

No. Public GoldWave documentation identifies it as part of GoldWave, not Windows or a Microsoft redistributable.

Where should gwspeed64.dll be?

Normally it should be in the GoldWave program directory beside GoldWave.exe, commonly under C:Program FilesGoldWave.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

Not as the first response to this error. Install a runtime only if the error names a runtime DLL or GoldWave’s installer explicitly requires it.

Does the file name prove that I need 64-bit Windows?

The 64 strongly suggests a 64-bit GoldWave component, but the filename alone is not complete binary metadata. Use the GoldWave release appropriate for your Windows architecture.

What if the file exists but GoldWave still will not start?

The message may refer to a missing dependency. Reinstall GoldWave, record the exact new error, and troubleshoot the newly named DLL instead of replacing GWSpeed64.dll.

What should I tell GoldWave support?

Provide the exact error text, GoldWave version, Windows version and architecture, installation path, whether the file exists, and any antivirus detection details. If the official installer still fails, contact GoldWave support and include those details.
