First, identify the application that reports the error and the location of the failing file. A copy at:
C:WindowsSystem32inetsrvgzip.dll
normally belongs to Microsoft IIS. A copy inside a program’s own installation folder belongs to that application unless its publisher proves otherwise.

Repair or reinstall the owning application from its official installer. If the path points to IIS, repair or re-enable IIS. If the file was quarantined, verify the publisher and restore it only when it is clearly trusted. Use DISM and SFC for damaged Windows components, not as a general repair for third-party software.
Why gzip.dll is difficult to identify
gzip.dll is not one universal Windows runtime file. Microsoft IIS includes an in-box compression provider registered as the gzip scheme. IIS uses the following configuration path:
<scheme name="gzip" dll="%Windir%system32inetsrvgzip.dll" />
The IIS provider supports Gzip and Deflate HTTP compression.
Other applications may include a private file with the same name. Public records associate a 32-bit version numbered 10.1.0.23, approximately 122–123 KB, with Honeywell Rapid Eye rather than Microsoft IIS or 7-Zip. Older file databases may describe it as a “GZip Plugin for 7-Zip,” but that description does not reliably establish ownership.
Recommended Free Tools
7-Zip supports the GZIP archive format, but its current documentation describes that support as built into 7z.dll and 7za.exe, not as a normal standalone gzip.dll component. Therefore, reinstalling 7-Zip is appropriate only when the error came from a 7-Zip installation or an application that specifically depends on that installation. It is not a universal answer.
Find the owner before repairing anything
Check the program that displays the error
Ask these questions:
- Which application was starting when the message appeared?
- Did the error begin after an update, uninstall, cleanup, antivirus detection, or failed Windows update?
- Is the affected program a server application, desktop application, game, archive utility, or monitoring system?
- Does the error appear during startup, when opening a file, or when an IIS website receives a request?
Write down the full error text and the application name. This information is more useful than the filename alone.
Check the file path
If the message identifies a path, inspect it carefully.
C:WindowsSystem32inetsrvgzip.dllpoints toward IIS.- A path under
C:Program Files,C:Program Files (x86), or an application’s own folder usually points toward that application. - A file in a temporary folder, download folder, or an unfamiliar directory deserves additional security checks.
- Multiple copies of
gzip.dllcan legitimately exist.
Do not assume that the copy in System32 is automatically the correct one. Windows uses different DLL search locations, and placing a replacement file in a system folder can create compatibility and security problems.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck the publisher and digital signature
Right-click the file, select Properties, and open the Details tab. Review:
- File description
- Product name
- Company or publisher
- File version
- Original filename
Then open Digital Signatures, if that tab exists. Select a signature and choose Details to verify whether Windows reports it as valid.
A publisher entry identifying Microsoft supports the IIS interpretation. Honeywell may identify an application-private copy. An entry mentioning 7-Zip should still be checked against the program path and the installer that placed it there. A missing or invalid signature is a reason to reinstall from the owning vendor rather than copy another DLL.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the application that owns the file
This is the most likely fix when gzip.dll is inside a program folder.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use Windows repair first
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the application named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair and wait for it to finish.
- Start the application again.
If Repair is unavailable or does not help, return to the application’s menu and choose Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings or local data.
Reinstall from the official installer
If repair fails:
- Back up the application’s settings or data according to the vendor’s instructions.
- Uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application developer or your organization’s approved software source.
- Install the same product edition and architecture used previously.
- Start the program and test the operation that produced the error.
For a game or launcher, use its built-in Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of game files function before reinstalling the entire game. That process restores missing files belonging to that specific installation. It does not make a DLL from another product compatible.
If the error appeared after an update, reinstalling the current official release is safer than restoring an old DLL manually. If the vendor provides a repair utility, use that utility rather than replacing individual files.
Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit application can use a 32-bit DLL on 64-bit Windows. The operating system’s bitness does not tell you which architecture the application requires.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
A 32-bit file associated with an older product may be valid for that product but unusable by a 64-bit application. Likewise, copying a 64-bit file into a 32-bit application folder will not solve the problem.
Use the application’s documentation or installer to determine its architecture. Do not choose a replacement solely because its filename matches.
Fix 2: Repair IIS when the path is under inetsrv
Use this fix when the error concerns a website or service and the configured path is:
%Windir%System32inetsrvgzip.dll
Confirm the IIS compression configuration
IIS stores its configuration in applicationHost.config. An administrator can inspect the compression scheme configuration and confirm that the gzip scheme points to the expected IIS path.
If the configuration points to a missing file, an unexpected directory, or a third-party DLL, do not overwrite the file blindly. Record the current setting and determine which change created it.
Re-enable IIS on Windows client editions
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Expand Internet Information Services.
- Confirm that the required IIS features are selected.
- Select OK.
- Allow Windows to apply the changes.
- Restart the computer if prompted.
- Test the website or local IIS application.
The available IIS features depend on your Windows edition.
Reinstall the Web Server role on Windows Server
Open PowerShell as administrator:
- Open Start.
- Search for PowerShell.
- Right-click Windows PowerShell.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
Install-WindowsFeature Web-Server -IncludeManagementTools
- Wait for the installation result.
- Restart the server if Windows requests it.
- Test the affected site and review IIS logs if the error continues.
Re-enabling the role is more appropriate than downloading an IIS DLL. If other IIS files are missing, or if the role installation itself fails, continue with the Windows component repair steps below.
Fix 3: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
Antivirus software may remove or quarantine a legitimate file, but a missing-file message is not proof that the antivirus made a mistake.

- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving
gzip.dll. - Expand the relevant detection.
- Check the original path, detection name, and action taken.
- Confirm the publisher and digital signature of the file if possible.
Restore the file only when you have confirmed that it came from a trusted vendor and the detection is a false positive. If the file is unknown, unsigned, or located in a suspicious directory, leave it quarantined and reinstall the owning application from its official source.
After restoring a trusted file, update the application and run a full Microsoft Defender scan. If the file repeatedly disappears, investigate the detection rather than repeatedly copying it back.
Fix 4: Repair damaged Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components. They do not normally restore an application-private DLL belonging to Honeywell, an older archive utility, a game, or another vendor.
Use this procedure when:
- IIS files appear damaged.
- Several Windows components are failing.
- The problem began after system corruption.
-
Windows features cannot be enabled correctly.
-
Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until SFC reaches Verification 100% complete.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application or IIS site.
Do not close the window while either scan is running. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, restart the computer and run the scan again. If the same problem remains, review the result and repair the owning application or IIS installation instead of repeating the commands indefinitely.
When manually comparing DISM and SFC results is taking time and you want a guided scan, Outbyte PC Repair can show what it identifies; its free scan shows the findings, while repair is handled by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the application that owns gzip.dll.
Fix 5: Update drivers only when the evidence points to a driver
A graphics, storage, network, or chipset driver does not normally provide gzip.dll. Driver work is relevant when the error began with broader device failures, an application crash references a driver, or Device Manager shows a device problem.
Check Device Manager
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the failing device.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Review the Device status message and Driver tab.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers, or install a driver obtained from the device manufacturer.
Restart Windows and test again. If the device has no warning and the error specifically names gzip.dll, a driver update is unlikely to be the direct fix.
When checking many devices manually becomes tedious, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the application remains the definitive repair when that application owns gzip.dll.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore is useful when the error began immediately after a driver, application, or system change and an appropriate restore point exists.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, settings, and installed programs without normally changing personal files. It does not guarantee recovery of an application-private DLL, so reinstall the affected application if the error remains.
Why regsvr32 gzip.dll is usually the wrong fix
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It is intended for self-registering COM or ActiveX DLLs that export DllRegisterServer.
Compression providers and ordinary runtime or plugin DLLs generally do not need registration. Running:
regsvr32 gzip.dll
may produce an error such as “The module was loaded but the entry point DllRegisterServer was not found.” That result does not prove that the file is missing or corrupt.
Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor explicitly documents registration for that particular DLL and provides the correct command for its architecture. Do not register a random downloaded copy.
Why downloading gzip.dll is unsafe
Random DLL download sites can provide:
- The wrong product’s file
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- An incompatible version
- A damaged or modified file
- A file with missing dependencies
- Malware disguised as a system component
Even a clean file with the correct name may not match the application’s expected interface. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or a program folder can also cause DLL search-order and security problems.
Use the official installer for the application, the Windows Features system for IIS, Microsoft Defender’s quarantine controls, and Microsoft’s repair tools for Windows components.
If the file exists but still will not load
A present file can still fail because:
- It is corrupt.
- It has the wrong architecture.
- A dependency beside it is missing.
- The application expects a different version.
- Windows blocked or quarantined a related file.
- The DLL came from another product.
- The application’s configuration points to the wrong directory.
“The specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency required by gzip.dll is missing, not necessarily that gzip.dll itself is absent.
Check the application log and Event Viewer:
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Review Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for entries at the time of the failure.
- Note the application name, faulting module, and error code.
Do not install the Visual C++ Redistributable merely because a DLL error exists. Use it only when the application separately reports a missing Visual C++ runtime, and match the redistributable architecture to the application.
FAQ
Is gzip.dll part of Windows?
Microsoft IIS includes a gzip.dll compression provider under System32inetsrv. Other copies may belong to third-party applications. The filename alone is not enough to identify ownership.
Does gzip.dll belong to 7-Zip?
Do not assume that it does. 7-Zip supports GZIP, but current official documentation describes that support through 7z.dll and 7za.exe. A legacy database description is not proof that a particular gzip.dll came from 7-Zip.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallShould I copy gzip.dll into System32?
No. A copied DLL can have the wrong publisher, architecture, dependencies, or application interface. Repair the product that owns the failing copy.
Will SFC fix this error?
SFC can repair protected Windows files. It will not normally restore a private DLL installed by a third-party application.
Why does Windows say the specified module cannot be found when the file is present?
A required dependency may be missing, or the file may be incompatible, corrupt, blocked, or from a different product.
Can I use regsvr32?
Usually not. Use it only when the vendor specifically confirms that the DLL is a self-registering COM or ActiveX component.
What should I do if the error started after antivirus removed the file?
Review Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history. Restore the file only after verifying its source, publisher, path, and signature. Otherwise reinstall the owning application.
When should I contact the vendor?
Contact the application or server vendor when reinstalling the correct product does not restore the file, the signature is invalid, the application requires a private legacy version, or logs identify a missing dependency that the installer does not repair. Include the full path, application version, architecture, exact error text, and relevant Event Viewer entry.
