Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a typical pre-recorded SDR video, choose H.264: it is YouTube’s explicitly recommended general upload codec. Choose H.265/HEVC when you are exporting a genuine HDR master and can preserve its 10-bit color and HDR signaling. YouTube’s reviewed upload guidance does not set a different codec rule for creators in India.
H.264 or H.265: which should you choose?
| What you are uploading | Practical choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary SDR video, including most gameplay recordings | H.264 | YouTube names H.264 in its recommended upload encoding settings. |
| A genuine HDR master | H.265/HEVC is a reasonable option; AV1 and VP9 Profile 2 are also recommended | YouTube’s HDR upload guidance lists these codecs for HDR. H.265 is not an automatic upgrade for every upload. |
| HDR exported as H.264 | Possible, but assess the export and upload trade-off | YouTube says H.264 10-bit can work for HDR, but requires very high bitrates, which can mean longer uploads and processing. |
The key distinction is SDR versus actual HDR, not India versus another country. The official upload guidance reviewed here is general platform guidance; it does not establish a special India-specific codec requirement or provide regional network data that changes this choice.
What the codec choice means for gameplay uploads
For SDR gameplay
Use H.264 unless you have a concrete workflow reason to choose otherwise. Export a progressive MP4, keep the recorded frame rate, and follow YouTube’s SDR color guidance. A file being 4K does not by itself make H.265 the better choice.
For HDR gameplay
Use an HDR-capable workflow from capture through export. YouTube’s HDR guidance calls for 10-bit or 12-bit color depth, Rec. 2020 primaries, and PQ or HLG transfer characteristics. H.265 is one supported recommendation; AV1 and VP9 Profile 2 are alternatives. Do not label an SDR export as HDR or assume that changing the codec creates HDR.

Recommended SDR upload settings
YouTube’s current guidance, accessed in 2026, gives these video bitrate recommendations for SDR uploads. They are upload targets, not YouTube Live ingestion settings.
| Resolution and frame rate | YouTube-recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p, 24, 25, or 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p, 48, 50, or 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
| 2160p/4K, standard frame rate | 35–45 Mbps |
| 2160p/4K, high frame rate | 53–68 Mbps |

Container, video, and audio
- Container: MP4.
- Video codec: H.264, progressive scan, High Profile, two consecutive B frames, closed GOP, CABAC, variable bitrate, and 4:2:0 chroma subsampling.
- Frame rate: Match the recording frame rate. YouTube’s wording is: “Content should be encoded and uploaded in the same frame rate it was recorded.”
- SDR color: YouTube recommends BT.709.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio in its recommended upload settings.
These settings are recommendations for file uploads. An editing app may name some options differently; use its H.264/MP4 export preset as a starting point, then verify frame rate, resolution, and color space before rendering.
Does H.265 make a better YouTube upload?
Not necessarily. The official guidance establishes H.264 as the general upload recommendation and lists H.265 among the HDR recommendations. It does not establish that H.265 always produces a smaller file by a fixed percentage, improves YouTube playback quality, or affects recommendations or ranking. The result depends on the source and encoding workflow.

If you export HDR in H.264 10-bit, YouTube warns that the required very high bitrates may increase upload and processing time. The reviewed guidance does not quantify a universal H.265 file-size or time saving, so compare your own exports if file size is important.
Keep pre-recorded uploads separate from YouTube Live settings
YouTube’s live encoder page permits H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 and gives bitrate guidance for live ingestion. Those values describe a live encoder feeding YouTube, not a pre-recorded file upload. HDR live streaming has its own H.265 guidance as well. Do not use a live bitrate table as the target for an uploaded recording.

Does India have a different H.265 upload rule?
No India-specific codec requirement is established by the official YouTube upload material reviewed here. A creator in India can use the same SDR-versus-HDR decision: H.264 for the ordinary SDR default, and a recommended HDR codec such as H.265 when the source and workflow are genuinely HDR. This is a statement about the guidance, not a claim that every regional YouTube workflow is identical.

The video looks washed out or the colors are wrong
Check that the exported file’s color space and HDR signaling match the source. For SDR, YouTube recommends BT.709. For HDR, preserve appropriate HDR metadata and signaling, including bit depth, Rec. 2020 primaries, and PQ or HLG transfer characteristics. A codec change alone cannot repair incorrect color tagging.

The upload or processing is taking longer than expected
Check resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and whether the file is H.264 10-bit HDR. YouTube specifically cautions that H.264 10-bit HDR can require very high bitrates and lead to longer upload and processing. Avoid treating live-stream bitrate settings as upload settings.
The result does not match the recorded motion
Verify that the export frame rate matches the recording. YouTube says to encode and upload at the same frame rate as recorded; do not convert frame rate without a reason in the editing workflow.
YouTube reports an audio or video upload problem
Check the file against YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings and audio or video upload troubleshooting. Confirm the container and codec are supported, the file finished rendering correctly, and its audio stream uses a recommended format.
Or let it run in the cloud
Choosing H.264 or H.265 determines how a pre-recorded file is encoded. If your separate goal is to keep a YouTube channel live 24/7 from uploaded videos, StreamNeo loops the uploaded recording or playlist from the cloud:
