H.264 vs H.265 for Live Streaming: Which Codec Should You Use?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

H.265 (HEVC) is generally more bitrate-efficient, but H.264 (AVC) remains the safer default when broad compatibility matters. Choose based on the destination’s current ingest support, the encoder you have, and your resolution and HDR needs. For YouTube Live, HEVC is an option and is currently required for live HDR; for a standard Twitch workflow, Twitch’s documented setup emphasizes H.264.

H.264 and H.265: the practical difference

Both codecs compress video for delivery. In general, H.265 can preserve more image quality at a given bitrate, or produce similar quality at a lower bitrate than H.264. That can help when upload bandwidth is limited or when you want to deliver high-resolution video efficiently. The actual result depends on the encoder, its settings, and the content; the codec name alone does not guarantee a particular quality improvement.

H.264 is the more conservative choice when compatibility across ingest workflows and playback devices is the priority. HEVC is useful only when the streaming destination and the rest of the delivery chain support it.

Decision H.264 / AVC H.265 / HEVC
Bitrate efficiency Generally needs more bitrate than HEVC for similar quality, depending on the encoder and content. Generally more efficient: better quality at the same bitrate, or similar quality at a lower bitrate.
Compatibility Safer when you need a broadly compatible live workflow. Use when the platform and delivery chain explicitly accept HEVC.
Bandwidth constraints May require a higher bitrate for a comparable result. Efficiency may help, but there is no universal percentage saving.
Live HDR on YouTube Not the codec YouTube identifies for its current live HDR support. YouTube currently supports live HDR only with HEVC.

Which codec should you use on your platform?

YouTube Live

YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists settings for H.264 and for AV1/H.265, and generally recommends RTMPS. YouTube’s protocol comparison lists HLS as supporting both H.264 and H.265, and describes H.265 as better suited to 4K because it supports HEVC. Confirm that your encoder and intended ingest protocol support the combination you plan to use before changing a production stream.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For live HDR, the choice is clearer: YouTube Help states, “At this time, HDR streaming to YouTube is only supported with the H.265 (HEVC) video codec.” YouTube also says viewers on devices that do not support HDR see the stream in standard dynamic range (SDR).

Twitch

Twitch’s broadcaster guidance focuses on balancing visual quality and playback stability against the game, internet connection, and computer hardware. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and emphasizes stream stability. Its Enhanced Broadcasting setup documents multitrack encodes and NVENC H.264. These materials do not establish broad HEVC ingest support for a standard Twitch workflow, so do not switch to H.265 for Twitch unless your current creator and encoder configuration explicitly supports it.

Other HLS delivery

Apple’s HLS authoring specification allows both AVC and HEVC video. For a multivariant presentation, it recommends declaring anticipated bandwidths for each stream. This is relevant to HLS delivery generally, but does not replace checking the specific service’s ingest and playback requirements.

Check your encoder before choosing HEVC

OBS documents HEVC support through hardware encoders, including NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel QSV, and Apple VideoToolbox. Availability depends on the specific hardware, operating system, and application configuration. OBS’s hardware-encoding guidance explains that these encoders offload encoding work from the CPU to specialized hardware.

  • In your streaming application, check the encoder options and confirm that an HEVC/H.265 hardware encoder is available on the computer you will use.
  • Verify that the destination accepts HEVC for your chosen protocol and stream type.
  • If HEVC is unavailable or the destination does not support it, use H.264 rather than assuming a newer codec will work.
  • Do not buy a new graphics card solely for HEVC until you have checked the capabilities of your existing hardware and the encoder options exposed by your software.

A decision process for a stable stream

  1. Check the platform’s current ingest requirements. If the destination or encoder does not explicitly support HEVC in your intended workflow, choose H.264.
  2. Identify a specific reason to use HEVC. It can make sense when the platform accepts it and you need better bitrate efficiency, 4K delivery, or YouTube live HDR.
  3. Confirm hardware and application support. Check the machine you already own for an available HEVC hardware encoder; support varies by device and operating system.
  4. Prioritize stability over the codec label. Set bitrate, resolution, and frame rate to suit your upload connection and computer. Twitch specifically recommends CBR and balancing those settings against hardware and internet capacity.
  5. Compare real output when quality is critical. Test the actual encoder and settings on representative content at your target bitrate. Different presets and content can produce different results, so a codec label is not a quality test.

Common problems and what to check

The platform rejects an HEVC stream

Check the platform’s current ingest documentation and confirm the selected protocol and encoder are supported together. If HEVC is not explicitly supported for that workflow, switch to H.264.

HEVC does not appear in the encoder menu

Check whether your current hardware, operating system, and streaming application expose a compatible hardware encoder. OBS lists NVENC, AMF, QSV, and VideoToolbox for supported HEVC workflows; their availability is hardware-dependent. H.264 is the practical fallback if your setup does not offer HEVC.

The stream is unstable despite using a more efficient codec

Efficiency does not compensate for a bitrate or resolution that exceeds your connection or computer’s capacity. Reduce the demand on the connection or system and use stable settings. For Twitch, its guidance recommends CBR and balancing bitrate, resolution, and frame rate with available internet speed and hardware.

Some YouTube viewers see SDR rather than HDR

YouTube says viewers on devices that do not support HDR receive the stream in SDR. That is distinct from an ingest failure: HDR is not displayed on every playback device.
