Usually, no. A Content ID claim by itself generally does not stop you from live streaming on YouTube. The key distinction is between a claim on content and a copyright enforcement action against an active live stream: if YouTube removes an active stream for copyright, the channel receives a strike and live streaming is restricted for seven days. Check your channel’s current status in YouTube Studio before going live.
Claim, live-stream match, and strike are different events
People often use “copyright claim” to describe several different things. YouTube treats them differently, and only some directly affect live-stream access.
| Event | What it means | Possible effect on live streaming |
|---|---|---|
| Content ID claim | YouTube identifies matching material, often in an uploaded or archived video. The rights holder’s settings may block, monetize, or track that video. A claim typically is not a strike. YouTube: Learn about copyright claims | Usually none by itself. |
| Match during an active live stream | YouTube scans live broadcasts for third-party material, including another live broadcast. It may warn you, replace the stream with a placeholder image, interrupt it, or terminate it if the material continues. YouTube: Copyright issues with live streams | The broadcast can be interrupted or terminated. A match is not automatically the same as a strike. |
| Copyright removal and strike | A valid copyright removal request can remove content and result in a strike. YouTube says removal of an active live stream for copyright leads to a strike and a live-stream restriction. YouTube: Understand copyright strikes | The first such restriction lasts seven days; another strike leads to a 14-day live-stream restriction. |
What a Content ID claim means for eligibility
An ordinary claim on a video in your channel is not, on its own, a ban from live streaming. Claims usually do not impact the channel or account, though the claimant’s policy may affect the claimed video—for example, by blocking it, monetizing it, or tracking its viewing statistics. That is separate from whether your channel currently has permission to start a live broadcast.
The practical risk changes if copyrighted material appears in the active broadcast. A live-stream match can trigger a warning or interruption; if YouTube removes the active stream for copyright, the consequence is a strike and a restriction on live access. So the useful question is not just “Do I have a claim?” but “What does Studio say about my current live-stream access, and what material will be in the broadcast?”

Check your channel’s live-stream status before going live
- Open YouTube Studio and review the channel dashboard and notices. Check for active copyright strikes, live-stream restrictions, and any notice explaining why a previous broadcast stopped. YouTube directs creators to Studio to review strike information.
- Confirm basic eligibility. YouTube’s general live-stream setup guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Account-specific restrictions shown in Studio take precedence for your channel. YouTube: Get started with live streaming
- If a stream was interrupted, read the specific notice. A live match or warning does not by itself establish that you received a strike. Look for the actual strike or restriction status rather than inferring it from the interruption alone.
If YouTube detects copyrighted material during your stream
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. It may warn you and replace the broadcast with a placeholder image; if the material remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. If you receive a warning, address it by stopping or removing the matched material. YouTube says the stream may continue if the warning is followed and the issue is addressed. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.
If you have permission to use the material
A license is important, but it may not prevent an automated live interruption. YouTube says the rights owner may need to add your channel to their Content ID allowlist. Ask the rights owner to do this before the event, and confirm that the permission covers the specific content and intended live use.

If you believe a claim is mistaken
Dispute a claim only when you have a valid basis, such as owning the necessary rights, relying on a copyright exception, or believing the material was misidentified. YouTube warns that an invalid dispute can lead to a removal request and, if that request is valid, a strike. Review the claim details and YouTube’s dispute process before submitting anything: YouTube: Dispute a copyright claim.
What happens to live access after a copyright removal?
YouTube’s stated rule is specific: if an active live stream is removed for copyright, the channel receives a copyright strike and live-stream access is restricted for seven days. If the channel gets another strike, the live-stream restriction becomes 14 days. These durations apply to the described live-stream removal and subsequent strike—not to every ordinary Content ID claim. Check Studio for the notice and restriction that applies to your account. Common situations and what to do
| Situation | Practical next step |
|---|---|
| You have a Content ID claim on an older upload, but Studio shows no live restriction. | The claim alone usually does not prevent streaming. Check the planned broadcast for material that could trigger a live match. |
| Your live stream shows a copyright warning or placeholder. | Stop or remove the matched material and follow the warning. Check Studio afterward to see whether a strike or restriction was issued. |
| You have a license, but the broadcast is still interrupted. | Ask the rights owner to add your channel to their Content ID allowlist before the next stream. |
| An active live stream was removed and Studio shows a strike or restriction. | Follow the account-specific notice and wait out the restriction. Do not use another channel to bypass it. |
| You believe the claim identifies the wrong material or you have a valid rights basis. | Review the claim and dispute process; submit a dispute only with a legitimate basis. |
