Supergiant Games explicitly recommends Vulkan for optimal performance on Deck. Treat fullscreen and VSync as troubleshooting options to compare—not as a universally proven best preset.
Recommended Hades settings to start with
| Setting | Starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Renderer | Vulkan | Supergiant recommends Vulkan when starting Hades on Steam Deck for optimal performance. Supergiant Games, February 25, 2022 |
| Resolution | Use the Deck’s native display resolution: 1280×800 or 1280×720, depending on the display configuration. | Valve’s Deck Verified criteria address supporting the default resolution, good defaults, and legible text; they do not prescribe a specific Hades VSync setting or frame cap. Valve’s Deck Verified criteria |
| Display mode | Begin with the current default; compare fullscreen if performance or display behavior is uneven. | Supergiant lists toggling fullscreen as a troubleshooting step, not as a fixed Deck-wide recommendation. Supergiant Games Hades FAQ |
| VSync | Leave the current setting initially; test the alternative if frame pacing or tearing is a concern. | The developer suggests toggling VSync for troubleshooting but does not identify one setting as best for all Decks. Supergiant Games Hades FAQ |
How to tune performance if it feels uneven
Make one change at a time, then play long enough to judge whether it helped. Compare frame pacing, any visible tearing, and whether text remains comfortable to read. These are practical checks, not published benchmark results.
- Confirm Hades is using Vulkan. This is the developer’s recommended starting renderer for Steam Deck.
- Try fullscreen, then compare it with the alternative display mode. Keep whichever behaves better on your device.
- Toggle VSync and compare. A change may affect pacing or tearing, so choose based on what you actually see.
- Close other running programs and disable overlays while troubleshooting; both are among Supergiant’s suggested steps.
Supergiant also mentions trying Vulkan for Windows and Proton users. On Steam Deck, start with the renderer recommendation above; if you are troubleshooting a nonstandard setup, compare available renderer options individually rather than changing several settings at once. Supergiant Games Hades FAQ
What one community configuration does—and does not—show
A community-submitted entry for a Steam Deck OLED reports 1280×800, fullscreen, VSync off, and a 60+ FPS target. That is one device-specific configuration report, not a controlled benchmark, measured result, or official recommendation. It can be a comparison point if you want to try those display settings, but it does not establish a universal frame cap or guarantee the same performance on another Deck. If an external controller behaves unexpectedly, Supergiant recommends disabling Steam Input for Hades. Checking for controller firmware updates may also help with connection or input issues. Supergiant Games Hades FAQ

What Deck Verified means for Hades
Supergiant announced on February 25, 2022 that Hades was Deck Verified and recommended Vulkan. Valve’s criteria cover whether a game works well on Deck, including display resolution, default settings, and legible text. Verified status is a useful compatibility signal, not a promise of identical frame pacing, battery life, or performance across every hardware and software version.
