Hades II has five animal familiars: Frinos, Toula, Raki, Hecuba, and Gale. To recruit them, first complete the Faith of Familiar Spirits incantation and use Witch’s Delight to bond with each one. Frinos is at the Crossroads; the others appear along the game’s routes as you progress. The later Hecuba and Gale unlocks do not have a confirmed run-count checklist, so keep advancing and watch for Hecate’s dialogue rather than relying on a specific threshold.
Unlock the familiar system first
After familiar-related dialogue with Hecate, the cauldron can offer Faith of Familiar Spirits. A 2025 Steam Community guide reports that it costs 2 Nectar and 1 Lotus and grants 3 Witch’s Delight, the treat used to bond with familiars. Treat those recipe details as reported rather than guaranteed: check the recipe shown in your current cauldron, especially if it differs.
The trigger is tied to progression and dialogue, not a reliably established number of victories. If the incantation is not available, keep progressing and speak with Hecate when possible.
Where to find each familiar
Frinos, the toad
Look around the Crossroads near the entrance to Melinoë’s tent. Once Faith of Familiar Spirits is complete, offer Frinos Witch’s Delight to recruit him. The familiar can add maximum Life, absorb some ranged shots, and be directed to compel Lost Shades for Psyche.

Toula, the cat
Check the docks between the City of Ephyra and the Rift of Thessaly. Toula may not be available the first time you pass through. If she is not recruitable, revisit the area, catch a fish with the Rod of Fishing at least once, and interact with her; these are reported walkthrough pointers, not a developer-confirmed checklist.
Raki, the raven
Look for Raki in Erebus. The first encounter is introductory; a later meeting lets you offer Witch’s Delight and recruit him. Raki is associated with mining and a critical chance bonus.

Hecuba, the hound
Hecuba appears in Echo’s room in the Fields of Mourning. Her recruitment is associated with later progression and Hecate dialogue after earlier familiar progress, but no exact trigger checklist is firmly established. Keep advancing, use familiars you have recruited, and check in with Hecate.
Gale, the polecat
Search the later surface route near Mount Olympus. One current guide points to Charon’s Shop before Prometheus; another walkthrough places Gale in a pre-boss surface encounter. Treat these as places to check, not a guaranteed spawn room. Gale’s precise recruitment requirements are likewise uncertain.

What to do if Hecuba or Gale has not appeared
Secondary guides disagree about late familiar gates. They mention possibilities such as recruiting the first three familiars, using or upgrading them, certain ability uses, or reaching a minimum run count, but the official Supergiant update announcements do not confirm an exact checklist. Do not treat any particular run number or sequence as guaranteed. Continue progressing, make use of the familiars already available, and watch for new Hecate dialogue and the relevant route encounters.
Choose a familiar for the run you want
One familiar accompanies Melinoë each night, so choose based on the help you want rather than a universal ranking. Frinos is associated with Life and ranged-shot defense; Raki with mining and critical chance. Other familiars provide different utility. Compare the resource you need, the passive benefit, and how the familiar may help in encounters before setting out.

Getting more Witch’s Delight
If you need additional treats, a 2025 Steam Community guide reports that the Bravery of Familiar Spirits incantation costs 1 Wool and 3 Wheat and awards 3 Witch’s Delight. It also reports a Beast-Loved Morsel recipe using 1 Nectar and 1 Star Dust, with a cooking time of 14 Whiles. These are secondary-source recipe figures; use the current cauldron interface as the authority if its requirements differ.

Supergiant’s official Warsong Update announcement says players can recruit all five animal familiars and describes bonding with a new familiar to help keep Melinoë out of harm’s way. The earlier Olympic Update announcement introduced two new animal familiars.
