In The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, “Halbrand” is Sauron using the identity of a mortal man. Season 1’s finale, “Alloyed,” reveals that truth to Galadriel. The important qualification is that the series does not give a final, simple answer about every feeling behind his behavior: his apparent wish to change, or to remain in Númenor, can be read as partly sincere even though his identity and manipulation are real.

The direct answer: Halbrand is Sauron, not an innocent man who discovers it later
The character question has a settled answer. Halbrand does not gradually learn that he is Sauron, and he is not a separate human being whom Sauron replaces at the end. Halbrand is the name and persona Sauron adopts while travelling in Middle-earth. The finale shows this through the conversation with Galadriel and the transformation sequence that follows their escape from Eregion.

The official series overview describes the late-Season 1 reveal in those terms: Halbrand is Sauron disguised as a mortal man, and he reveals his true identity to Galadriel in the finale. That makes the character’s basic knowledge unambiguous. The uncertainty concerns motive and emotion, not whether he knows who he is.

What “know” means in this question
Discussions about the twist often combine three different questions. Separating them prevents the most common misunderstanding.

The third row is where many explanations go wrong. Vickers learning the secret during production says something about the actor’s information, not about when Sauron, as a fictional character, first understood his own identity.
How the Season 1 finale confirms Halbrand’s identity
The Eregion journey is the turning point
After Halbrand is badly injured, Galadriel brings him to Eregion, where Elrond and Celebrimbor are trying to find a way to preserve the Elves’ fading power. Halbrand offers knowledge that helps Celebrimbor develop the alloy and design that will become central to the rings. His contribution is not an accidental gift from a confused traveller: it is part of Sauron’s long-term objective of influencing the making of powerful artifacts.
Galadriel recognizes the pattern
Galadriel notices that Halbrand’s knowledge and advice fit the clues surrounding Sauron. When she examines the kingly identity he has used, she realizes that the man beside her is not the lost Southlands ruler he claimed to be. The finale’s flashbacks and dialogue connect Halbrand with the form Sauron has chosen.
The reveal to Galadriel
Once Galadriel confronts him, Halbrand stops behaving as though he is merely a stranded human. He presents the same persuasive, double-edged character seen throughout the season, but the concealment is over. The official recap treats this as the Season 1 reveal: Sauron has been disguised as Halbrand, and Galadriel is the person to whom he exposes that truth.

Why the showrunners say Halbrand was Sauron from the start
Payne and McKay explained in interviews published in October 2022 that the twist was not a late rewrite. They conceived Halbrand as Sauron and built the season around clues that would work in two ways: before the reveal, they could sound like the dialogue of a damaged human king; afterward, they could be understood as the words of the Dark Lord managing a deception.
The showrunners specifically pointed to lines such as “Looks can be deceiving” and “The tides of fate are flowing.” Neither line proves the answer by itself. Their purpose is retrospective. Once the finale has supplied the context, those statements acquire a second meaning and make clear that the writers were planting the identity rather than inventing it at the last minute.
This approach also explains why Halbrand’s actions can seem inconsistent if they are judged only as the behavior of an ordinary man. He can be cooperative in one scene, evasive in the next, and unusually knowledgeable in a third because the performance is carrying two identities at once. The visible character is Halbrand; the concealed identity is Sauron.
What the clues mean on a rewatch
His warning about appearances
“Looks can be deceiving” functions as ordinary caution when Halbrand is speaking to people who distrust him. After the reveal, it reads as an unusually direct acknowledgment that he is presenting a false surface. The line is not a confession in the moment; it is a clue designed to become legible later.
His language about fate and direction
“The tides of fate are flowing” sounds like a poetic comment about events beyond one person’s control. In retrospect, it also reflects Sauron’s tendency to frame manipulation as destiny. He nudges other characters toward choices and then describes the resulting movement as if it were inevitable.

His practical knowledge
Halbrand repeatedly knows more than a displaced Southlands survivor should know. His expertise about metal, craft and power becomes especially important in Eregion. The reveal does not require viewers to assume that every sentence was a coded message; it does show that his unusual competence has a coherent source.

Halbrand quickly identifies what different characters want and adjusts his approach. He can appear humble to one person, wounded to another and authoritative to a third. That flexibility is consistent with Sauron’s strategy: offer each listener a version of the truth that serves the larger plan.
When Charlie Vickers learned the secret
Vickers did not receive the full explanation at casting. In an ABC interview published on September 4, 2024, he said the showrunners took him aside just before filming the third episode and told him, “Halbrand is actually Sauron in disguise. He’s the dark lord.” He described the disclosure as exciting and also a relief because he had noticed hints in the scripts.
That timing was deliberate. Payne and McKay said they wanted Vickers to discover the answer after he had begun establishing Halbrand’s behavior. Their approach let the early performance remain grounded in the character’s immediate circumstances instead of turning every gesture into an actor’s attempt to signal a twist to the audience.
Vickers later recalled that, at first, he knew nothing specific and only had an “inkling” that there was more to Halbrand. A January 2025 interview with Rotten Tomatoes likewise placed his discovery during the filming of episode three. Those accounts agree on the essential point: the actor’s knowledge began partway through production, not at the start of the role.

Did Vickers play Halbrand as a conscious con from every scene?
No such rule is established by the interviews. Vickers said, “I think I was always earnestly playing Halbrand.” That statement describes his acting choice. He did not treat the role as a collection of winks announcing “I am Sauron”; he played the person in front of the camera as a believable, emotionally present character.
Playing Halbrand earnestly does not contradict the character’s knowledge. An actor can portray Sauron’s disguise sincerely from inside the scene while still understanding the larger secret. It also leaves room for Halbrand’s experiences to have emotional weight for Sauron, even when the outward behavior serves manipulation.

This is the part the show leaves open. Vickers said in a post-finale interview that the question of whether Sauron’s repentance was genuine was not one he thought it was his place to answer. That is not confirmation that the remorse was fake, nor confirmation that Sauron had permanently changed. It is an invitation to treat the ambiguity as intentional.
The case for calculated deception
Sauron has a clear strategic reason to appear repentant. He needs allies, access to Númenórean power and eventually a route into the Elven project at Eregion. Presenting himself as a man who wants to leave violence behind can lower other people’s defenses. His later actions show that he remains willing to exploit trust when it advances his goals.

The case for conflicted sincerity
The season also gives Halbrand moments that do not have to be reduced to a mechanical lie. He appears exhausted by conflict, reluctant to return to the Southlands and drawn to the possibility of a different life. Those reactions can be interpreted as Sauron experimenting with repentance, wanting it and failing to sustain it, or using a sincere impulse for selfish ends.

Nothing in the supplied interviews proves that one reading is the only correct one. The defensible conclusion is narrower: Halbrand knows he is Sauron, while the depth and durability of his apparent wish to change remain unresolved.
Did Halbrand first become Sauron in episode three?
No. Episode three is the point when Vickers learned the secret while filming. It is not an origin point for the fictional character. The showrunners’ account that Halbrand was Sauron from the beginning, together with the finale’s presentation of his disguise, rules out the idea that a separate Halbrand later turns into Sauron.
Using the episode-three fact as an in-story explanation reverses production history and story chronology. The correct timeline is: the writers planned Sauron’s identity before filming; Vickers was informed shortly before episode three; the audience received the character reveal in the Season 1 finale.
Why the distinction matters for interpreting the season
If Halbrand were unaware of his identity, his early scenes would be a mystery about possession or recovered memory. That is not the story the finale presents. Instead, the suspense comes from whether other characters—and the audience—will recognize a deliberate disguise before Sauron gains influence.
The distinction also changes how to read his relationship with Galadriel. Their conversations are not simply two damaged people helping each other recover. Halbrand is learning what Galadriel wants, what she fears and how strongly she is committed to defeating Sauron. At the same time, the relationship may expose a genuine attraction to the possibility of partnership or redemption. The deception and the emotional complexity can exist together.
A concise timeline of the reveal
- Before filming: Payne and McKay conceive Halbrand as Sauron and plan clues that will support a later reveal.
- Early production: Vickers begins playing Halbrand without being told the character’s full identity.
- Before episode three is filmed: The showrunners tell Vickers that Halbrand is Sauron in disguise.
- Season 1 episodes: Halbrand’s dialogue, expertise and behavior provide clues that can be read differently after the twist.
- Season 1 finale, “Alloyed”: Galadriel identifies Halbrand as Sauron, and the series makes the disguise explicit.
Bottom line for the character question
Halbrand knew he was Sauron because Halbrand was Sauron’s chosen disguise from the beginning of the story. The showrunners planned that identity from the outset, and the finale confirms it. Charlie Vickers’ delayed disclosure during filming explains why his performance feels like an earnest human life rather than a constant theatrical confession; it does not mean the fictional Halbrand was discovering his identity in episode three. What remains deliberately unsettled is not his identity, but whether any part of his apparent repentance or desire for a different life was genuine.
