Half-Life 2 RTX is available as a free, separate Steam release for players who own Half-Life 2. It launched on March 18, 2025, and the currently playable build is a demo covering Ravenholm and Nova Prospekt—not the complete remastered campaign.
Do you need to buy Half-Life 2 RTX?
No separate purchase is required for eligible owners. Steam lists Half-Life 2 RTX as free, but it is a community-made mod that requires ownership of the base Half-Life 2 game.

The entitlement must be associated with the same Steam account used to install the RTX release. Owning Half-Life 2: Episode One, Episode Two, Half-Life 2: Deathmatch, or another Valve bundle should not be treated as a guaranteed substitute unless Half-Life 2 itself appears in your Steam Library. If you do not own it, Steam’s US store listing showed a $9.99 price when checked, although regional prices and promotions can change.
How to download it on Steam
- Open the official Half-Life 2 RTX Steam page.
- Sign in to the account that owns Half-Life 2.
- Select Install now.
- Reserve about 50 GB of free storage.
- Launch the RTX title as its own Steam installation; it does not simply replace the ordinary Half-Life 2 executable.
If Steam does not offer the installation, verify that the base game is owned on the current account, Steam is online and updated, and the title has not been hidden or filtered by a library setting. Steam currently lists Family Sharing support, but individual sharing arrangements should not be assumed to satisfy the ownership check without confirmation from Steam.

What is included in the demo?
The available demo includes two areas:
- Ravenholm
- Nova Prospekt
Orbifold Studios’ project is intended to overhaul more of Half-Life 2, but the Steam release remains a preview. It should not be described as the finished full-campaign remaster, and the supplied official sources do not provide a verified full-release date.
What does Half-Life 2 RTX change?
The project uses NVIDIA’s RTX Remix technology to rebuild the presentation while retaining the original game’s core gameplay and logic. The visual work includes:

- Remade high-poly models and additional geometric detail
- Reworked skyboxes, weapons, enemies, particles, and atmospheric effects

In other words, this is primarily a rendering and asset overhaul rather than a new version of Half-Life 2 with redesigned gameplay.

The RTX 3060 Ti is the official minimum, not a promise that every system with that card will deliver a smooth experience at high settings. The game uses full ray tracing, so players at the minimum tier may need to reduce resolution or visual presets. A non-RTX graphics card, or a card below the listed minimum, does not meet Steam’s official specification.
NVIDIA has also promoted RTX 50-series hardware for the highest showcase settings. That is a vendor recommendation for a particular visual target, not a replacement for Steam’s published minimum and recommended tiers.

Graphics settings and supported NVIDIA features
Press Alt+X in-game to open the RTX Remix settings menu. Start with the default or recommended preset, then lower ray-tracing or resolution settings if frame rates or frame pacing are unstable. DLSS should be tested with it enabled, as required by the listed specifications.
The launch material identifies support for:
- RTX Remix and full ray tracing
- DLSS Super Resolution
- DLSS Ray Reconstruction
- DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation
- NVIDIA Reflex
- Neural Radiance Cache
- RTX Skin and RTX Volumetrics
- Other RTX neural-rendering technologies
Availability and usefulness vary by hardware and settings. Frame generation can increase the displayed frame rate, but it does not equal the same level of native rendering performance and does not remove CPU, VRAM, latency, or frame-pacing limits. NVIDIA’s promotional “up to” performance figures should therefore be read as vendor technology claims, not universal benchmarks.

Do you need to upgrade your PC?
- RTX 3060 Ti or better: You meet the official GPU minimum, but expect to adjust settings if performance is unstable.
- RTX 4070 or better: You are closer to Steam’s recommended hardware tier for higher settings.
- Non-RTX GPU or weaker hardware: You do not meet the official listed minimum.
- No copy of Half-Life 2: You need the base-game entitlement before Steam will provide the free RTX release.
- Expecting the complete remake: Wait for a separately confirmed full release; the current product is the Ravenholm/Nova Prospekt demo.
Do not buy a new graphics card solely for this two-area demo unless it also makes sense for your wider PC gaming needs, monitor resolution, and interest in ray-traced games. RTX Remix itself is not required to play the Steam release, and installing a newer driver alone cannot overcome hardware limitations. NVIDIA’s launch driver supported the demo on March 18, 2025, but that is not necessarily the latest driver in 2026; use the current official driver page when troubleshooting.
Bottom line for Half-Life 2 owners
Half-Life 2 RTX is genuinely free for owners of the base game, but “free” does not mean standalone or unrestricted. Install the separate Steam release from the account that owns Half-Life 2, reserve 50 GB, and check your GPU against the RTX 3060 Ti minimum. What you can play today is a demanding RTX showcase built around Ravenholm and Nova Prospekt—not yet the full Half-Life 2 campaign remaster.
