That listing does not clearly establish whether the full original campaign is playable, so the release date alone should not be taken as confirmation of full-campaign coverage.
What is Half-Life 2 RTX?
Steam’s listing identifies Half-Life 2 RTX as a free, community-made DLC developed and published by Orbifold Studios. It requires ownership of Half-Life 2. The project remasters the classic game with ray-traced rendering and rebuilt visual assets rather than replacing the original game with a new story.

For the practical availability question, the listing contains two different signals: it presents the DLC as released on March 18, 2025, while its description says “Ravenholm and Nova Proskpekt demo available now!” (Steam spells the location that way in this line.) The page does not clearly establish the full campaign’s playable scope.
That wording also differs from NVIDIA’s launch framing. In its March 18, 2025 announcement, NVIDIA called the Steam download a free demo for Half-Life 2 owners, featuring Orbifold Studios’ work in Ravenholm and Nova Prospekt “ahead of the full game’s release at a later date.” That was the announcement’s description at the time, not confirmation of a current release schedule. The Steam page’s current release metadata and demo wording should be read together, rather than treating either one alone as proof that the complete original campaign is available.
#1 Best Overall
- Amazing new graphics with pre-rendered cutscenes that look like they came from the movies
- More realistic physics - Objects have varied and appropriate mass, density and physical properties
- Incredibly advanced AI as enemies adapt, plan, improvise, and respond
- Hordes of new aliens and other enemies, plus a plethora of new guns and weapons
What changes in the RTX remaster?
Steam describes full ray tracing, remastered assets, hand-crafted physically based textures, enhanced high-poly models, updated lighting, and DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation. These are the store’s descriptions of the project’s visual and rendering features.
Rebuilt assets and materials
NVIDIA’s launch announcement describes Orbifold Studios rebuilding assets and levels. RTX Remix provides a modding workflow for capturing and categorizing elements from a classic game, assembling editable scenes, and replacing the original renderer during playback with the Remix runtime. In practical terms, the treatment aims to update how familiar environments and objects look, not merely apply a new resolution to the old graphics.
Lighting and rendering
Steam’s “full ray tracing” description signals a substantial change to lighting and reflections, but the store page does not itemize every effect or explain its implementation. NVIDIA also identified RTX Neural Radiance Cache as a feature in the demo. Current RTX Remix platform material discusses path tracing, neural rendering, AI-assisted material enhancement, asset capture, and DLSS 4.5 with Multi Frame Generation; those are platform-level capabilities, not proof that every capability is included in this Half-Life 2 RTX build.
The RTX Remix platform continues to change. NVIDIA’s release notes date RTX Remix 1.5 to June 16, 2026, and describe packaging-size reductions using RTX IO, viewport-light controls, automatic geometry smoothing, and runtime and toolkit improvements. That is an update to the modding platform, not an announcement that Half-Life 2 RTX received a new content expansion.

Original game versus RTX version
| What to compare | Original Half-Life 2 | Half-Life 2 RTX |
|---|---|---|
| Materials and models | Original game assets | Steam describes remastered assets, hand-crafted physically based textures, and enhanced high-poly models. |
| Lighting and reflections | Original rendering | Steam describes full ray tracing and updated lighting; NVIDIA identifies RTX Neural Radiance Cache in the demo. |
| Performance and hardware demands | Not specified in the cited RTX listing. | Steam lists an RTX 3060 Ti minimum and RTX 4070 recommended, with DLSS on for both. |
| Available content | The original game. | Steam calls Ravenholm and Nova Prospekt a demo; its listing does not clearly establish the full campaign’s playable scope. |
Is Half-Life 2 RTX free?
Yes. Steam lists it as free DLC, but you must own Half-Life 2 to use it. The free listing does not resolve the separate question of how much of the campaign is currently playable; the description identifies Ravenholm and Nova Prospekt as the demo.
What PC specs do you need?
Steam lists the following system requirements. These are the store’s stated specifications, not independently tested performance recommendations.
| Requirement | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 | 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 |
| Processor | Intel i5-8600 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 | Intel i7-10700 or AMD Ryzen 5 5600 |
| Memory | 16 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| Graphics | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, with DLSS on | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070, with DLSS on |
| Storage | 50 GB available space | 50 GB available space |
The 50 GB figure is Steam’s listed available-space requirement, not a measured install-size report. The RTX 4070 is the graphics card Steam names in its recommended configuration; that does not make it a universal upgrade recommendation. Check the full listed requirements against your existing system before deciding whether hardware changes are necessary.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does Half-Life 2 RTX require an RTX card?
Steam’s listed minimum and recommended graphics cards are both NVIDIA RTX models, and both specify DLSS on. The listing therefore names an RTX 3060 Ti as the minimum and an RTX 4070 as recommended; it does not list an alternative non-RTX configuration. It also does not establish that all RTX cards offer comparable performance.

NVIDIA reported an average 10.2X performance multiplier at 4K for the Half-Life 2 RTX demo using DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation on a GeForce RTX 5090. That is NVIDIA’s result for that particular card and setting, not an independent benchmark or a general performance expectation for other GPUs.
What the RTX Remix updates do—and do not—tell you
NVIDIA describes RTX Remix as an open-source modding platform for classic games, and its current platform page includes Half-Life 2 RTX among its showcased projects. RTX Remix compatibility documentation cautions that compatibility does not guarantee a bug-free experience and that some effects may need replacement or custom support. This is general guidance about the platform across games, not evidence of a specific Half-Life 2 RTX bug.
NVIDIA also reported in 2025 that more than 30,000 modders had experimented with RTX Remix and more than 1 million gamers had played Remix mods since beta, across hundreds of classic titles. Those figures describe the platform, not the Half-Life 2 RTX project.
