The free-to-keep offer for the original Half-Life was a limited weekend promotion in November 2023, not an ongoing giveaway. Valve said players who claimed the game during that anniversary weekend could keep it permanently. Its announcement does not establish that new players can still claim it for free; check the live Steam listing for current regional pricing and availability.
What the Half-Life free offer included
Valve tied the promotion to the game’s 25th anniversary. Half-Life launched on November 19, 1998, and Valve announced the anniversary update on November 17, 2023. The publisher wrote at the time: “For those new to the game, Half-Life is available for free this weekend – grab it now and keep it forever, and check out discounts on the whole franchise.” That offer applied to claims made during the stated weekend; the announcement does not say that the free claim window remained open afterward.

Valve’s 25th Anniversary Update announcement and notes also described the build it called definitive and said it would continue supporting that version. The update added or restored several features and pieces of content:
- Half-Life: Uplink: the previously separate demo was included.
- Multiplayer: new maps were added.
- Controls and connectivity: controller support and Steam Networking support were added.
- Steam Deck: Valve marked the game verified for Steam Deck.
- Presentation and fixes: the update included graphics options, improved widescreen field of view, restored content, and gameplay, rendering, interface, and engine fixes.
Is Half-Life free on Steam right now?
The 2023 announcement is historical, so it should not be treated as proof of a free offer today. Valve’s Half-Life Steam listing is the place to check current availability and price. Pricing and promotions can vary by region and change over time; no current price or discount is established here.

Why some older articles say the series was free
There was another, separate promotion in January 2020. Valve said the Half-Life series would be free to play on Steam until Half-Life: Alyx launched. That was temporary access to play, not the 2023 free-to-keep weekend. Valve’s 2020 announcement documents that earlier play period.

Valve’s anniversary announcement only confirms that players could keep the game if they claimed it during the promotion. It does not establish a continuing free claim for new players. If you did not claim it then, check the Steam listing for the current purchase price or any new offer rather than relying on the old giveaway headline.
