Hall Effect vs. TMR Joysticks: Which Controller Stick Technology Should You Choose?

Hall effect and TMR sticks avoid potentiometer contact wear, but neither guarantees a drift-free controller. Compare the full controller and treat performance claims as product-specific.

Hall effect and TMR joysticks both use contactless magnetic sensing, which avoids the electrical contact wear found in potentiometer sticks. Neither is immune to drift or failure: the springs, gimbal, calibration, firmware, and overall build still matter. Choose between controllers by comparing the whole design—not the sensor label alone.

How the sensing technologies differ

Both designs detect stick movement through changes in a magnetic field, but they sense those changes differently.

  • Hall effect: A sensor detects changes in magnetic field as the stick moves. GameSir’s Super Nova is an example of a controller identified as using Hall effect sticks by TechRadar.
  • TMR: A sensor detects changes in magnetic resistance. The GameSir Cyclone 2 and ASUS ROG Raikiri II are examples of controllers identified as using TMR sticks in TechRadar’s Cyclone 2 review and ASUS’s product information.

For a technical overview of joystick sensing, see Texas Instruments’ joystick design note.

Which is more resistant to stick drift?

Both magnetic approaches can avoid the rubbing electrical contact used to measure position in potentiometer sticks, reducing one source of wear-related drift. That does not make either complete stick assembly failure-proof. Mechanical parts such as springs and gimbals can wear or shift, and calibration or firmware can affect how a controller reports its center and movement. SCUF’s FAQ also distinguishes the sensing approaches while discussing Hall effect thumbsticks: SCUF’s Hall effect FAQ.

Is TMR more accurate or power-efficient?

Some manufacturers promote TMR as more precise or more power-efficient, but the available evidence does not establish that TMR always outperforms Hall effect in controllers. GameSir makes low-power and zero-dead-zone claims for its TMR technology, while ASUS says the ROG Raikiri II’s TMR sticks are more accurate and power-efficient than Hall effect. These are product claims, not a universal, independently controlled comparison.

In its Cyclone 2 review, TechRadar described the TMR sticks as smooth and precise but said the difference from Hall effect was not large. That is a reviewer’s impression of a particular controller, not a measurement proving that all TMR sticks behave the same way or outperform all Hall effect designs. No comparative accuracy, drift-rate, lifespan, or battery-life figure is established here.

Compare complete controllers, not just stick sensors

Real products use both technologies: the GameSir Cyclone 2 and ASUS ROG Raikiri II are TMR examples, while the GameSir Super Nova is a Hall effect example. Their presence makes it possible to compare actual controllers, but the sensing method alone does not determine which one will suit a player.

  • Platform compatibility: Check support for your console, PC, or other intended device in the current regional product specifications.
  • Connection: Decide whether you need wired or wireless play, and check the modes and limitations for your platform.
  • Stick feel: Consider tension, range of motion, centering, and ergonomics. A sensor label cannot tell you whether the sticks will feel right in your hands.
  • Adjustment and calibration: Look for the controls you need to set dead zones or calibrate sticks, and check whether those settings are available on your platform.
  • Other controls: Compare triggers, buttons, layout, and any other features that affect the games you play.
  • Warranty and price: Weigh the maker’s warranty and the current price against the controller’s overall fit.

Specifications, availability, and regional compatibility can change, so confirm them with the manufacturer before buying. Product-specific claims should be judged against independent testing of the particular controller; the cited coverage does not establish a controlled, cross-controller test of TMR versus Hall effect.

What if your current controller is drifting?

A replacement stick module may be an option for some controllers, but module fit is model-specific. Do not assume a Hall effect or TMR module is a universal drop-in repair: confirm compatibility with the exact controller and its revision before buying parts or opening the device.

How to choose

  • Choose a controller with either technology if its platform support, feel, controls, and overall value meet your needs.
  • Treat claims about TMR accuracy, zero dead zones, or lower power as claims about the named product unless comparable independent measurements support a broader conclusion.
  • If long-term drift resistance is your priority, remember that contactless sensing addresses one potential wear point, not every mechanical or electronic cause of failure.
