Choose the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 if you’ll regularly use its four rear paddles, adjustable-tension thumbsticks, shorter trigger locks, or custom profiles. The Elite adds ways to tailor controls; the documented features do not establish that it makes every player more accurate or improves game performance.
What’s different between the controllers?
This comparison is between the current Xbox Wireless Controller and the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2. “Xbox Elite Controller” can also refer to an earlier generation, whose specifications may differ. The standard controller comes in multiple colors and editions; included accessories and cosmetic details can vary. Elite Series 2 configurations include Core and customizable Design Lab editions.

Which controller should you buy?
Choose the Xbox Wireless Controller for everyday play
If you don’t expect to use rear paddles or adjust stick tension, the standard controller covers ordinary play without paying for Elite-specific customization. It includes a hybrid D-pad, textured grip, Share button, Bluetooth, and AA-battery power. Microsoft’s product page lists these features but does not establish a universal current retail price. Choose the Elite Series 2 if you’ll use its controls
The Elite is a stronger fit if you have a practical use for its four paddles, adjustable stick tension, shorter trigger travel, custom profiles, interchangeable parts, or built-in rechargeable battery. Its value depends on how much you’ll use those features; the feature list alone does not show a performance advantage for every player.
Consider Core if you want the Elite platform’s customization
Elite Series 2 Core is a configuration to consider if price matters but you want the Elite platform. Microsoft’s September 21, 2022 announcement listed US MSRPs of $129.99 for Core and $59.99 for the Complete Component Pack at that time. Those are historical manufacturer prices, not current street prices. Microsoft’s component listing describes a pack with a carrying case, charging dock, assorted thumbsticks, a D-pad, four paddles, and USB-C cable, and says it is compatible with Elite Series 2 controllers including Core. How much do they cost?
Prices depend on configuration and retailer, so compare the exact versions you intend to buy rather than relying on a fixed price premium. Xbox Design Lab’s current US page lists a starting ERP of $169.99 for a customizable Elite Series 2. ERP is a manufacturer reference price, not a guarantee of a retailer’s price. The historical Core and component-pack MSRPs above should not be treated as current offers. Xbox Design Lab’s US Elite Series 2 page
