The best Halls of Torment build depends on your character and mark, the hall and difficulty you are tackling, and whether you need to survive or clear enemies quickly. Build around a clear goal: pair abilities with traits that reinforce them, then use equipment to strengthen the plan or cover its weak points. There is no single strongest loadout established for every run.

What makes a build in Halls of Torment?

A run’s build comes together from three parts: your character’s traits, abilities and upgrades, and equipment. The game’s official Steam description presents these as the tools for creating a powerful build during each run. Unique items can also be sent to the overworld and used to customize later runs. Steam’s Halls of Torment listing describes the systems and current published content inventory.

The number of choices makes a universal “best build” misleading. Steam lists 11 playable characters and character marks, 74 abilities and ability upgrades, 60 unique items plus 240 higher-rarity variants, 25 blessings, 30 artifacts, and more than 1,000 traits. Those are published inventory figures, not a promise that everything is unlocked at the start or equally useful in every situation.

How to choose a build for your run

  1. Start with character and mark

Pick a character and mark that suit the way you want to play. The game distinguishes character playstyles, so consider what your chosen character naturally does well before selecting supporting abilities and equipment.

  2. Define the content and win condition

State the hall, mode, difficulty, and objective you are building for. A setup intended to last through a demanding survival run may need more recovery and protection than one designed to clear enemies quickly. Challenge rules can also alter what counts as success; check the current in-game rules rather than assuming every mode uses the same objective.

  3. Choose an ability engine

Decide how the build will deal damage or control threats, then choose abilities and upgrades that work toward that plan. Look for abilities that reinforce one another rather than treating each selection as an isolated source of damage.

  4. Use traits to amplify or support the plan

Choose traits that strengthen the selected abilities or address a weakness the abilities leave open. Traits that improve offense can support a damage-focused engine; defensive or recovery choices can help a setup that otherwise struggles to stay alive.

  5. Equip for synergy and gaps

Choose items for the effects that fit your build, not just because an item is rare. Equipment can add to the core plan or compensate for a shortfall in survival, damage, or positioning.

  6. Check the unlock dependency

If the build depends on a specific trait, item, or upgrade you have not unlocked, substitute an available option with a similar role. Treat the substitute as a practical variation, not as proof that the original setup will perform identically.

Balance damage, survival, and positioning

A build is more than its damage potential. Compare options using the same questions:

  • Damage pattern and synergy: Do the abilities and traits reinforce one another, and are they suited to the objective?
  • Survival and recovery: Does the setup have enough protection or recovery for the selected difficulty, or does it rely on ending threats quickly?
  • Mobility and positioning: Does the plan require you to stay near enemies, keep distance, or move into particular positions?
  • Unlock dependence: How much does the build rely on a specific item, trait, or upgrade?
  • Objective fit: Is it meant to survive, kill efficiently, or meet a specific challenge condition?
  • Difficulty ceiling: Does it remain comfortable at the difficulty or Agony level you intend to play?

For example, a damage-heavy setup may need defensive support if it cannot remove threats quickly enough. A survival-first setup may last longer but sacrifice kill speed. These are trade-offs to evaluate against your goal, not fixed rankings for all characters and halls.

Build examples: use goals, not unverified loadouts

The available official information establishes how characters, abilities, traits, and items combine, but does not provide verified numerical rankings or exact current character-by-character loadouts. Use these goal-based templates to shape a run rather than treating them as tested presets:

  • Damage-focused run: Choose abilities that support a coherent damage plan, take traits that amplify or enable it, and reserve equipment choices for the plan’s defensive or recovery gaps. This approach prioritizes clearing power over safety margins.
  • Survival-focused run: Prioritize traits and equipment that help you withstand pressure, then choose abilities that remain useful while you play cautiously. Expect to give up some kill speed compared with a more aggressive setup.
  • Unlock-limited run: Build around the character, abilities, and items currently available to you. Replace missing pieces by function—offense, defense, recovery, or positioning—rather than assuming an unavailable late-game option is essential.

Steam Community includes guides framed around Agony runs, build synergy, and game mechanics, but community recommendations can age as the game changes. Treat them as ideas to evaluate against your own character, unlocks, objective, and game version, not as independently verified performance results. Version caveat: updates announced for October 2026

This guide is checked against information available on October 7, 2026. On October 1, developer Chasing Carrots announced that The Lost Archives DLC would arrive on October 22, 2026, and said the experimental branch would receive base-game and Boglands changes before release. Those planned changes were not a verified description of the stable build as of October 7. See Chasing Carrots’ Halls of Torment Steam news.

A March 17, 2026 developer preview described planned Shrine of Torment options for timer- and kill-count-based completion on supported stages, separate records by mode, and fixed-seed weekly challenges. It also previewed changes to Fragile and Affliction. Because the post described work in progress, do not assume those details are live or build around them without confirming the current version in-game. Read the developer’s Halls of Torment announcements.

The same October announcement previewed The Lost Archives characters: the Inquisitor, who uses Judgement stacks and execution strikes, and the Blood Apostle, who spends HP for destructive power through a Sacrifice system. It also announced new abilities, items, traits, blessings, and artifacts. These are DLC-era concepts, not recommendations for existing-character builds before the DLC release.
