What the restored Earth City mission includes
The E3 2003 scenario put the Master Chief in New Mombasa as Covenant forces attacked Earth. Marines and ODSTs fight alongside him, and the demo featured a different look, weapons, vehicles, and enemies. It did not make it into the retail Halo 2 campaign, according to Halo’s Digsite article.
The mod offers a few ways to explore the rebuilt level:
The Tool Desk

- Master Chief can now wield two weapons at once, board Covenant vehicles and steal Covenant weapons like the incredible double energy sword
- Lead an all-new unit of super-soldiers, the ODST -- tougher, badder and deadlier versions of your old comrades
- New enemies, allies and surprises around every corner - intense combat action with enhanced AI and real-time lighting
- Immense single-player action with maassive landscapes and huge cities to explore and defend - destructible and interactive environments
- Take the action online with your Xbox Live and switch sides, to become a Covenant Elite!
- Guided sequence: Optional navigation markers help players follow the key beats of the original showcase.
- Co-op: The restored mission supports cooperative play.
- Playground: A separate version lets players roam freely rather than follow the demo’s sequence.
The Steam listing cautions that some inconsistencies remain because the content had to be adapted for MCC, and that the play experience may vary.
Why the E3 demo had to be rebuilt
The original demo ran on an engine version that no longer existed, and its assets were incompatible with other versions of Halo 2. To make the scenario work in MCC, the Digsite team drew on recovered original files and tools for analyzing and automating asset porting. Halo’s account says the restored version also improves visual quality and stability.

- To play the Halo games on your Xbox 360 system, an OEM hard drive is required.
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
Recovery was part of the challenge: not every E3 asset survived in later Bungie depots. An earlier Digsite retrospective describes finding early builds and developing extraction methods, work that also helped establish tools for moving maps between engine revisions and content formats.
In an Xbox Wire article published November 4, 2024, Halo Senior Franchise Writer Kenneth Peters described one obstacle: “Even the original executable is difficult to work with, as you need an Xbox developer kit to get it to boot, which is in increasingly short supply even within the studio.”
Rank #3
- The Covenant alien race threatens to destroy all humankind, and the only thing standing in its way is Master Chief, a genetically enhanced supersoldier. Master Chief returns in Halo 2, which features new vehicles, weapons, environments, and more. This time, you can interact with your environment, wield two weapons at the same time, board opponents' vehicles, and even switch sides to play the role of a Covenant Elite. Halo 2 also supports broadband multiplayer action via Xbox Live.
Is the demo the same as the original E3 build?
No. The playable release is a restoration adapted to run in MCC, not the exact video or executable presented at E3, and it is not a hidden mission in the retail campaign. Its markers, co-op support, Playground version, and technical adjustments are features of the restored mod. The original showcase dates to E3 2003; the playable release arrived in November 2024, for Halo 2’s twentieth anniversary.
