It is not an official Starship Troopers adaptation, though: the licensed alternative, Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War!, is a single-player first-person shooter for fans who want to fight as Mobile Infantry in that specific franchise.
Why Helldivers 2 feels like Starship Troopers
Arrowhead CEO and creative director Johan Pilestedt called Starship Troopers the most obvious pop-culture reference behind Helldivers 2. In a March 1, 2024 interview with PC Gamer, he said the studio wanted players to experience the cinematic chaos “without the plot armour.” That is a useful distinction: the game draws on the film’s militarized bug-war spectacle, but it is Arrowhead’s own game, not an official adaptation.

The resemblance is more than a visual nod. Players drop into hostile territory as expendable-looking soldiers, follow a grandiose war effort and try to survive alien swarms while support strikes rain down around them. The comedy comes from the mismatch between the voice of confident military propaganda and the messy reality of keeping a squad alive.
What makes Helldivers 2 especially fun
Co-op turns every mission into a group story
Helldivers 2 is a third-person cooperative shooter for squads of up to four players. Missions feed into an evolving Galactic War, so the core appeal is not simply clearing bugs: it is coordinating a small team under pressure, deciding when to call in support and adapting when plans go wrong. Sony reported that the game had welcomed more than 22.9 million players across PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC as of August 9, 2026. That figure measures player reach, not sales.

Friendly fire makes the chaos personal
In many shooters, the biggest threat is across the battlefield. Here, teammates and their own support calls can become part of the danger. PCWorld has described friendly-fire mishaps and orbital support turning a squad’s strike into a comic disaster. That accidental chaos suits the Starship Troopers-style fantasy: the soldiers are fighting a massive enemy, but surviving their own side’s decisions is part of the joke.
The satire works even when you are focused on the fight
Helldivers 2 uses authoritarian-sounding slogans and overblown military confidence as part of its tone. But its satire need not be the main attraction on every mission. GameSpot has argued that the satire can recede as players concentrate on combat and progression; that is one reviewer’s reading, not a universal verdict. The practical point is that the game can work as a hectic co-op shooter even if you are not constantly parsing its political jokes.

How it compares with the licensed Starship Troopers game
Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War! is the direct licensed alternative, but it offers a different kind of experience. The PlayStation Store lists it as a one-player, first-person shooter with a solo campaign; its PS5 release date was March 16, 2026. Helldivers 2, by contrast, is third-person and built around cooperative squads. The choice depends on whether you want shared, evolving missions or a solo campaign in the franchise itself.

The PlayStation Store describes Ultimate Bug War! as a solo experience, while Sony’s PlayStation announcement describes Helldivers 2 as supporting up to four players. Those formats—not an objective measure of quality—are the clearest basis for choosing between them.

Which game should you play?
Choose Helldivers 2 if…
- You have friends to play with, or you want the unpredictable rhythm of cooperative missions.
- You enjoy combat where a poorly timed strike or teammate mistake can become part of the story.
- You want the Starship Troopers-style tone without requiring an officially licensed game.
Choose Ultimate Bug War! if…
- You specifically want the Starship Troopers license and its Mobile Infantry setting.
- You prefer first-person shooting and a solo campaign over four-player co-op.
- You want a game whose premise is explicitly part of the franchise rather than an acknowledged influence.

Sony announced on August 12, 2026, that Helldivers 2 had joined the PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium Game Catalog. Catalog access can vary by region, subscription tier and date, so check the current listing for your account before relying on it. Sony’s PlayStation Direct also lists a PS5 disc edition; current retail stock and pricing are not established here.
