Halo 3 is not being rebuilt as a New Vegas mod. The experimental NVxH3 project connects a running Fallout: New Vegas engine to a running Halo 3 engine through a custom translation layer. New Vegas provides the Mojave, quests, NPCs and open-world structure; Halo supplies its movement, weapons, shields, physics, animations, projectiles, HUD, models and effects.
What “Halo 3 inside New Vegas” actually means
NVxH3 is a cross-engine integration, not a conventional armor, weapon or texture port. The two games remain separate executables and communicate while they run simultaneously. The project’s author, ImolaBoost, describes it as a “custom H3 and NV translation layer with both games running simultaneously.”

That distinction matters. “Fully merged” can suggest that one game was rewritten into a single executable, but the author has clarified that this is not the architecture being attempted. The layer passes information between the engines so each can continue doing the jobs it was built to do.

Which game supplies which systems?
| Function | Primary source in NVxH3 |
|---|---|
| World, locations and open-world streaming | Fallout: New Vegas |
| NPCs, quests and role-playing framework | Fallout: New Vegas |
| Player movement and combat feel | Halo 3 |
| Weapons, projectiles and damage behavior | Halo 3, translated back into New Vegas |
| Shields, HUD, models and visual effects | Halo 3 |
| Physics and projectile interaction | Halo 3’s Havok-based systems, with Mojave collision data streamed across |
In practical terms, Mojave collision geometry is streamed into Halo’s physics engine. Halo projectiles and damage are then translated back into New Vegas, allowing a shot, impact or physics event to affect the role-playing game’s world rather than merely appearing as a visual replacement.

How the two engines communicate
- New Vegas supplies the environment. The Mojave’s terrain and collision information are made available to the Halo side of the integration.
- Halo processes native gameplay. Halo 3 handles movement, weapons, animations, projectiles, shields, physics and related presentation systems.
- The translation layer sends results back. Damage and projectile outcomes are converted into information New Vegas can use for its actors, quests and world state.
- Both executables continue running. This is why the project is an engine-to-engine bridge rather than a single game with imported assets.
The author says engine hooks were reverse-engineered with AI assistance because doing that work manually was not feasible. The rendering and physics translation, however, were manual integration work. Calling NVxH3 an “AI mod” therefore overstates the role of AI: AI helped uncover the interfaces, while the actual cross-engine systems were built by hand.
Why the combination is so striking
New Vegas and Halo 3 represent sharply different design identities. New Vegas is structured around exploration, dialogue, faction decisions and quests. Halo 3 is built around authored shooter movement, readable combat arenas, projectile behavior and physics-driven encounters. NVxH3 deliberately places the latter inside the former’s world.

- Expands on the franchise and adds a wealth of technical and gameplay advancements
- Unparalleled first-person shooter experience and the most compelling story of the trilogy
- Builds upon the social multiplayer experience and innovative, evolving, online gameplay of Halo 2
- Loaded with high-definition visuals, enhanced AI, an advanced lighting engine, new weapons, characters, and challenges
That is the source of the project’s “nothing makes sense anymore” appeal. The novelty is not seeing an energy weapon model in the Mojave; it is the prospect of authentic Halo-style movement and combat rules interacting with New Vegas geography, characters and quest spaces.
How it differs from earlier Halo/New Vegas mods
Fallout: New Vegas already has ordinary crossover mods. Nexus Mods lists “ODST Armor From Halo 3,” a version 1.0 port from a Fallout 3 armor mod. Its listing records an original upload on July 20, 2025, and a last update on October 18, 2025.

- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
| Comparison point | ODST Armor From Halo 3 | NVxH3 |
|---|---|---|
| Basic approach | Conventional asset addition | Live communication between two engines |
| What changes in play | Equipment appearance and armor content | Movement, physics, weapons, shields, projectiles and effects |
| Engine relationship | Uses New Vegas as the host | Runs New Vegas and Halo 3 simultaneously |
| Technical ambition | Importing content | Streaming collision and translating gameplay events |
This comparison is why NVxH3 is technically more ambitious than a normal crossover mod, even though it remains an unfinished experiment rather than a released game.
Current development and availability
The project was still in development in the latest public statements available for this report. ImolaBoost said a GitHub repository would be uploaded after the feature set was complete and bugs had been addressed, with Nexus Mods mentioned as another possible release location.

Halo-derived projects face a real distribution risk when they reuse copyrighted game content outside an official Halo product. Project Misriah, a separate Halo recreation for Counter-Strike 2, was removed from Steam after a Microsoft DMCA notice. PC Gamer reported that the notice alleged “unauthorized use of Halo game content in a workshop not associated with Halo games infringes their rights.”
Best Value
- Halo 3: ODST contains 1,750 new Xbox LIVE achievement points, as well as new weapons, technology and an invite to join the Halo: Reach beta in 2010
- Stand-alone expansion to Halo 3 that doesn't require ownership of the previous game to play
- New campaign, hero and tactics from the Halo universe as players take on the role of a rookie in the Orbital Drop Shock Troopers sent into New Mombasa
- 4-player co-op "Firefight" mode offers a whole new way to play Halo with friends both via system link and over Xbox LIVE
- Along with all the existing Halo 3 maps, ODST contains three new multiplayer Halo 3 maps: Heretic, Longshore, and Citadel
That takedown does not show that Microsoft has targeted NVxH3. It does show why a future GitHub or Nexus Mods release could encounter rights, hosting or takedown problems, especially if it distributes original Halo assets rather than requiring legally owned files or using newly created replacements. Until the author publishes a build and its asset policy, download claims should be treated cautiously.
What to watch for in a real release
- A clearly documented supported version of Fallout: New Vegas and any required Halo files.
- Whether both engines must be installed separately and how the translation layer launches them.
- Collision and projectile synchronization in busy areas, not just a controlled demonstration.
- Stability information, crash recovery and performance measurements from the author.
- An explicit explanation of which assets are original, redistributed or required from an existing installation.
The bottom line
Halo 3 is not literally running as a hidden subsystem inside one New Vegas executable. NVxH3 is a more unusual arrangement: two native engines running together, with a custom bridge moving world collision, physics, projectiles and damage between them. New Vegas remains the role-playing world; Halo 3 supplies the shooter systems. AI assisted the reverse-engineering of engine hooks, but the integration itself was manual. The concept is real and unusually deep, yet it remained unfinished, unbenchmarked and not confirmed as a public download in the latest available statements.
