The best Halo custom games start with a deliberate ruleset, not a pile of random modifiers. In Halo Infinite, choose the mode and map first, then tune score and time, team structure, spawning, sandbox access, objectives, and player traits in the Mode Editor. Test the variant with the intended player count or bots, save a clearly named version, and tell everyone which rules are active.
Use the numeric examples below as host-tested starting points rather than official presets. Halo exposes different controls for each mode, so an option described here may not appear until you select a mode that supports it.

Start with the mode, map and win condition
Open Custom Games, select the game mode, and then choose the map. The selected mode determines which defaults and editor categories are available. Editing before choosing the mode can leave you balancing settings that do not apply to the match you actually intend to run.

Pick a map that fits the format
Match the lobby size and team count to the map’s playable space and objective routes. A small arena can become crowded when several teams or a large lobby are forced into it; a spacious map can make a low-population objective match feel empty. Treat the map, mode and maximum lobby size as one design decision rather than separate menus.

Set score and time before fine tuning
Score and time limits define the pace of every other setting. Decide whether the session is meant to be a short warm-up, a social match or a longer scrimmage before changing weapons or player traits.
| Use case | Editorial starting point | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Warm-up or aim practice | 5–10 minutes or a modest score target | Players get several quick repetitions without waiting through a long reset. |
| Objective party match | 10–15 minutes with a reachable objective score | There is enough time for rotations while keeping a losing side from being locked out for too long. |
| Scrimmage | 20–30 minutes or a higher score target | Teams have time to adapt, practice setups and recover from an early mistake. |
These values are editorial guidance, not a universal Halo preset. If your group consistently reaches the limit without a decisive result, change one variable at a time: extend the clock or lower the target, then run another test.
Balance teams and lobby structure
Choose free-for-all or teams intentionally
Free-for-all removes teammate coordination but increases the importance of spawn safety and target selection. Team modes add roles, trades and objective coverage, so they need even player distribution and a map that supports multiple approaches.

Keep team totals even whenever the mode allows it. If one player must be assigned to an uneven side, use a bot or rotate the extra player between rounds rather than allowing the same team to hold a permanent numbers advantage.
Control access and observers
Set lobby access before inviting players. Decide whether the room should be open to anyone with the lobby link, restricted to invited players, or configured for a hosted event. Enable observers only when they serve a purpose, such as coaching, casting or recording; otherwise they can add confusion about who is actively playing. The host can also set the maximum lobby size, so reserve spectator capacity if your format requires it.
Fix spawning before adding complexity
Spawning is a documented match-option category and one of the fastest ways to ruin an otherwise fair ruleset. Run a short test with the intended player count, or use bots to create pressure when the full group is unavailable.

What to watch during a spawn test
- Players repeatedly appearing in sight of an opponent.
- A team being forced into one doorway, corner or objective approach.
- A side that cannot safely re-enter play after losing control of an area.
- Deaths that occur immediately after a respawn often enough to create a loop.
If you see a trap, change the spawn-related option exposed by the mode, alter the team count or choose a different map. Do not compensate for a bad spawn pattern by handing the trapped side stronger weapons; that masks the problem and can make the next engagement unpredictable.
Use weapons, equipment and ammunition to define the sandbox
Sandbox controls cover weapon loadouts, placements and ammunition. Decide what skill the match is meant to test before distributing power.
Precision-focused ruleset
Restrict starting weapons and pickups so fights revolve around aim, positioning and timing. Limit high-impact equipment or place it where both teams can contest it. This produces a more repeatable baseline for practice and makes score swings easier to diagnose.
Variety-focused party ruleset
Allow broader weapon and equipment access when experimentation is the point. Spread powerful items across more than one approach so a single lane does not decide every engagement. Keep ammunition high enough that players can use the sandbox, but avoid unlimited supplies if resource control is part of the challenge.
Power-item control
For a competitive setup, place important weapons deliberately and tell players when they are available. A pickup that appears in an isolated room can reward the first spawn rather than the better team. Test the route, the timing and the surrounding cover with both sides before locking the variant.

Make objectives and scoring unambiguous
Mode-specific options can change which actions award points and how objectives behave. Explain the scoring and reset behavior before launch, especially when your variant differs from the mode’s default.

Capture and zone objectives
Confirm what counts as a capture, how progress is contested, and whether a partially completed action resets or persists. If a zone rotates, tell players the rotation pattern or the trigger that moves it. Unclear reset behavior makes a close match feel random even when the underlying rules are consistent.
Round-based formats
Set the round win condition and the total rounds needed for the match. Check whether score carries between rounds or resets. A long overall timer combined with short rounds can create a very different pace from a single continuous match, so test the transition between rounds as well as the opening minute.
Score checks
During a trial, watch for runaway scoring caused by a bonus that stacks unexpectedly, a reset that never occurs, or an objective route that only one team can reach safely. If the score accelerates, first identify which action is producing the points; then adjust that mode-specific option rather than changing every setting at once.

Health and damage, shields, radar, movement, jump height and clambering can all alter the value of cover and the length of an engagement. Change one trait family at a time and keep a baseline variant so players can compare the effect.
Health, shields and damage
Higher durability gives players more time to react and can support objective pushes, but it also reduces the payoff for accurate bursts. Lower durability makes first-shot accuracy decisive and can magnify spawn or connection problems. If you alter both shields and damage simultaneously, document the combination; otherwise players will not know which change caused a different time-to-kill.
Radar and information
Radar changes how safely a player can flank or hold an angle. Disabling or reducing it can reward stealth and communication, while stronger information can help new players understand routes. Use the setting to support the format rather than as a blanket difficulty switch.

Movement and jump options
Movement speed, jump height and clambering affect which routes are reachable and whether an objective can be defended from unexpected angles. After changing them, walk every major route in a brief test. A movement modifier that looks minor in the menu can open a shortcut, bypass cover or invalidate a defensive setup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAdd bots for practice and population control
Custom Games can add bots to either team, choose their number and set their difficulty. Bots are useful when you need to rehearse routes, test objective timing or expose a spawn issue before the full lobby arrives.
Route and role rehearsal
Place bots on the opposing team, then practice the exact job a player will perform: opening a lane, carrying an objective, defending a reset or contesting a power-item location. Repeat the route from both sides. This reveals whether one team has a safer approach even when no human opponent is present.
Population testing
Use the same approximate number of bots as the planned player count when checking spawn behavior and sightlines. Replace bots with humans for the final balance pass because bot movement and decision-making do not reproduce every human tactic.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep competitive interface settings separate from match rules
Player-facing interface choices do not change the custom-game rule set, but they can improve clarity in a competitive session. Halo’s competitive-settings guidance recommends enabling FPS and network statistics, showing player names, and disabling chromatic aberration, bloom and parallax for a cleaner view.
- FPS and network statistics: expose performance or connection problems that might otherwise be mistaken for a balance issue.
- Player names: make team communication and recorded review easier.
- Chromatic aberration, bloom and parallax: removing these effects reduces visual clutter for players who want a clearer competitive presentation.
Apply these as individual player settings; do not assume every participant has the same display or preference.

A repeatable host workflow
- Open Custom Games. Select the intended mode and map before editing any rules.
- Set the match frame. Choose score target, time limit, free-for-all or team play, team count and the planned maximum lobby size.
- Review spawning. Run a short test and look for repeated traps or unsafe re-entry routes.
- Configure the sandbox. Set starting loadouts, weapon placements, equipment access and ammunition to match the session’s purpose.
- Define objective behavior. Confirm capture, round, scoring and reset rules and explain them to players.
- Adjust player traits. Change health, shields, damage, radar or movement only when the change supports a stated goal.
- Add bots if needed. Use them to rehearse routes or fill the test lobby, selecting number and difficulty for the scenario.
- Set lobby controls. Choose access, enable observers when required and reserve the appropriate player capacity.
- Save or bookmark the variant. Give it a name that includes the mode, map, team format and revision, such as
CTF_Arena_4v4_v2. - Announce the active version. Tell players which saved variant is loaded so everyone is discussing the same rules.
- Run the full session. Watch for runaway scoring, spawn traps and unexpected movement routes, then make a single targeted revision before the next match.
Compare formats with the same checklist
When choosing between two custom variants, compare them on the same axes instead of relying on a general impression.
| Axis | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Objective | What action wins, and can both sides reach it through viable routes? |
| Scoring and time | Can a team recover from an early deficit before the clock ends? |
| Team structure | Are team count, player distribution and map size compatible? |
| Spawning | Can either side re-enter play without an immediate death loop? |
| Sandbox access | Are weapons, equipment and ammunition supporting the intended skill test? |
| Player traits | Do health, damage, radar and movement reinforce the format? |
| Lobby structure | Are access, observers and maximum size configured for the event? |
| Repeatability | Can the host reload the same saved variant next session? |
Troubleshoot the first test instead of guessing
One team wins every power-item fight
Check placement, approach routes and surrounding cover. Move the item, add a contestable route or restrict the starting loadout. Increasing damage for the losing side should be a last resort because it changes every fight.
The match ends without a clear winner
Inspect the score target, time limit and objective scoring together. A high target with a short clock may be intentional for a defensive exercise, but it is a poor fit for a normal session. Change the limit or target after confirming which condition is ending the match.
Players report random deaths after spawning
Repeat the test with fewer players and then with the planned population. If the problem appears only at high population, reduce the lobby size, change team distribution or select a map with safer spawn space.
Players disagree about the rules
Pause before the next round and state the active mode, score target, time limit, objective action and unusual modifiers. Save a corrected version with a new revision name so the lobby does not silently switch between variants.
Preserve a baseline for recurring sessions
Save or bookmark a clean baseline before experimenting. Create revisions for substantial changes rather than overwriting the only working copy. A short name that records mode, map, team format and revision lets the host reload a known ruleset and makes feedback specific: players can report that a spawn issue appeared in version 3 rather than arguing about which setting changed.
Menu labels and available options can change after game updates. Re-open the variant after an update, confirm that the editor still exposes the intended categories, and run the brief spawn and scoring checks before inviting a full group.
