Halo Support recommends it for newcomers following the games in release order. If you would rather begin with a book, read Eric Nylund’s Halo: The Fall of Reach for background on the Spartan-II program and the Master Chief. The novel adds context; it is not required preparation for playing the games.
Should you start with Halo novels or games?
Choose the medium you most want to experience first. Halo Studios says there is no single right route into the lore, and its newcomer guidance points to several accessible entry points. You do not have to read every novel before playing, or follow one prescribed sequence across books and games.

- Want to play the series from its beginning? Start with Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary in MCC, the release-order starting point recommended by Halo Support’s MCC Quick Start Guide.
- Prefer fiction and background first? Start with Halo: The Fall of Reach, a foundational origin story that predates the first game.
- Want a newer version of the original campaign? Consider Halo: Campaign Evolved, announced as a remake for new players. Its announced July 28, 2026 release date has passed, so check current platform listings for availability.
- Want to begin with a later game? Halo Infinite was positioned as a new chapter and possible entry point, though it continues the wider continuity.
What the first book adds—and what it does not
Halo: The Fall of Reach by Eric Nylund was published on October 30, 2001, before Halo: Combat Evolved. It introduces the Spartan-II program and provides early-story context for the Master Chief. Halo Studios identifies it as a source of enduring franchise concepts in its Canon Fodder: Foundations feature and the official Halo book guide.
Reading it first is a good choice if you enjoy learning the history behind a game’s characters and setting. But the books are not generally assigned as prerequisites. For example, Halo Studios describes Shadows of Reach as a lead-in to Halo Infinite while explicitly saying it is not required reading. That distinction applies to newcomers choosing a starting point: books can deepen the setting without becoming homework.

How the main starting options compare
| Starting option | Best for | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary in MCC | Players who want the game series in release order | Halo Support’s recommended starting point for newcomers following release order. MCC contains six games, according to the MCC Quick Start Guide. |
| Halo: The Fall of Reach | Readers who want lore and character background first | A novel-first origin story about the Spartan-II program and the Master Chief’s early history. |
| Halo: Campaign Evolved | Players seeking a newer presentation of the original campaign | Halo Studios announced the remake for Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5, with a July 28, 2026 release date. Because that date has passed, current availability is not established here; check live platform listings. |
| Halo Infinite | Players who want a later chapter with newcomer-oriented positioning | Presented by Halo as a possible entry point, but it belongs to the broader ongoing continuity. |
If you choose to read, where should you go next?
After The Fall of Reach, choose books by era, character, or the game you want to understand better rather than treating the catalogue as one mandatory sequence. The official Halo book guide groups stories into lines including the Forerunner Saga, Kilo-5, Master Chief and Blue Team, Alpha-Nine, Gray Team, the Ferrets, and stand-alone stories.
For the original game-era story
The original novel group continues with William C. Dietz’s Halo: The Flood (2003), a novelization of Combat Evolved that adds perspectives; Eric Nylund’s Halo: First Strike (2003), which follows events after the game; and Nylund’s Halo: Ghosts of Onyx (2006). These are options for readers who want to stay with that era, not a required reading list before starting the games.
For readers interested in Halo Infinite
Kelly Gay’s Halo: The Rubicon Protocol, released August 9, 2022, follows survivors after the UNSC Infinity is ambushed on Zeta Halo. Her Halo: Edge of Dawn, released December 16, 2025, is set after the Master Chief defeats Escharum. Both are targeted follow-on reads for readers drawn to that part of the timeline, not opening books newcomers need to read first.

For short fiction
Halo: Waypoint Chronicles – Volume One was released on May 26, 2026, in trade paperback, ebook, and unabridged audiobook formats. The collection brings together more than thirty short stories, including previously online stories and new tales, according to the official book guide. It offers a way to sample different corners of Halo fiction rather than commit to a long novel sequence.

What if you want to start with a newer game?
Halo Infinite was originally presented as a new chapter and a potential entry point, while still continuing the larger continuity. It can suit someone who wants a later-era game, but it is not the same as beginning at the start of the game release order. For the specific current status of Halo: Campaign Evolved, use the platform listings: Halo Studios announced it for Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5 on July 28, 2026, and that date has now passed. The announcement and launch details are covered by Halo Studios and Xbox Wire.
