Hamako Mori, known online as Gamer Grandma, was 89 years and 280 days old when Guinness World Records verified her as the “Oldest videogames YouTuber (female)” on 25 November 2019. Her story began decades earlier, when she watched children play and decided gaming looked too fun to leave to them.
Who is Hamako Mori?
Hamako Mori is a Japanese videogames YouTuber known as Gamer Grandma. Guinness World Records lists her birth date as 18 February 1930 and verified her record in a specific category: “Oldest videogames YouTuber (female).” The verification was made on 25 November 2019, when she was 89 years and 280 days old. Guinness World Records’ record entry supports that dated description; it does not by itself establish who holds the record today or who is the oldest gamer overall.
How Mori discovered video games
Mori told Guinness World Records that she became interested after seeing children in her family playing. “It looked so much fun, and I thought it’s not fair if only children played it.” The interview, published on 11 May 2020, says she had started playing 39 years earlier. Guinness’s 2019 record entry described her gaming history as more than 38 years by the date of verification. These are accounts made at different times, not a precise, independently documented start date. Read the Guinness interview with Mori.
Decades of games, kept as memories
Mori’s first console was a Cassette Vision, according to the 2020 interview. She said she had kept most of the consoles and software she bought over the years because they brought back memories. That collection reflects how gaming became part of her life over decades, rather than a hobby she picked up only when she started posting videos.
