Published reviews praise its handmade visual world and memorable character moments, but also flag long conversation-heavy stretches and a plot that meanders. It is most appealing if you enjoy patient, story-first games; players looking for frequent action or brisk momentum may find it a slog.
What is Harold Halibut?
In Harold Halibut, you play Harold, a young lab assistant living aboard the FEDORA I, an ark-like spaceship stranded beneath an alien ocean. The ship fled an Earth threatened by the Cold War, and lead scientist Jeanne Mareaux is still working toward a relaunch. Harold’s days revolve around the ship’s residents until a pivotal encounter draws him into a new world that could change Mareaux’s plans.
Developer Slow Bros. describes the game as “a handmade narrative game about friendship, and life on a city-sized spaceship submerged in an alien ocean.” Its focus is on characters and conversations rather than combat or rapid-fire challenges. The game released on April 16, 2024, and is listed for PC, Mac, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5 by the official site; its Steam listing also gives that release date.
Why the handmade look is the main attraction
The visual style is built around physical craft, not a conventional digital imitation of stop-motion. Slow Bros. says the project began in 2012 from the team’s interest in stop-motion and story games. It made dollhouse-sized sets and puppets using sculpting and model-making techniques; the official site calls out details such as welded metal, tiny wooden floorboards, textiles, and clay faces. The developer describes the result as “a cross between game and stop motion film.”

That tactile approach gives the ship and its inhabitants an unusual sense of material presence. Slow Bros. also describes the game as fully English voice acted, with an ensemble whose stories unfold in conversation and a cinematic narrative that blends drama, humor, and suspense. Those are the developer’s descriptions; the published reviews offer a more mixed account of how successfully the story sustains that promise.
What reviewers liked—and where the pacing falters
Visuals, characters, and flashes of wit
Joshua Wolens’s PC Gamer review, published April 15, 2024, awarded Harold Halibut 60/100. Wolens praised its handcrafted art style, occasional clever dialogue, bold set pieces, and jokes. GameSpot’s review listing gives it 7/10, describing it as a triumph in its characters and visuals that struggles to stay afloat under the scope of its ambitions. These are separate critics’ judgments, not a single consensus score.

Slow stretches and a wandering plot
The main trade-off is how much time the game spends talking and moving between story beats. Wolens found that stretches of conversation-heavy play drag and that the plot meanders. His verdict was: “A great artstyle and flashes of brilliance never truly make up for a meandering, risk-averse plot.” He reported spending about 13 hours with the game; that is his review experience, not a universal completion-time estimate.
Is Harold Halibut worth playing?
It depends on what you want from an adventure. If you value a distinctive handmade art direction, patient character interaction, and a gentle, conversation-centered story, its deliberate pace may be part of the appeal. If you want frequent action, tightly paced progression, or a plot that escalates quickly, the published criticism about slow stretches and meandering momentum is a reason to be cautious.

Calling it a “walking simulator” depends on how narrowly you use that label. The evidence here supports describing it as a single-player, story-led adventure centered on exploration and conversation; it does not establish a precise genre classification or a detailed breakdown of its interactive tasks. It is fair to expect a more conversational experience than an action-driven one.
