Stardew Valley has helped make farming and life-simulation games a more visible creative option. Whether that influence is bad depends on what developers do with it: borrowing a familiar structure can be a starting point, but repeating its whole package without a distinct purpose can make cozy games feel interchangeable. The available examples support that concern as a design question, not as proof that the genre has broadly lost originality.
How influential has Stardew Valley become?
Stardew Valley is officially described as an “open-ended country-life RPG.” Created by Eric Barone under the name ConcernedApe, it launched on PC on February 26, 2016, and its official press page says it passed one million copies sold within two months. Those figures help explain why it became a prominent point of reference, though popularity alone does not show that later games copied it.

Barone has acknowledged that the game helped encourage more developers to consider farming and life-simulation games. In a report published by PC Gamer on April 30, 2025, he said: “I can’t take all the credit for this, but Stardew, it seems to have inspired a lot more people to consider this kind of game. Like farming game life sim kind of games.” He called the resurgence “great” and said it was “cool” to see developers make games in that style. That is evidence of influence, not an admission that the influence has narrowed the genre.

Influence is not the same as imitation
Stardew Valley itself grew from an earlier game’s formula. In a February 24, 2017 interview with Game Developer, Barone explained: “Harvest Moon was one my favorite games as a kid, and it left a lasting impression on me. I wanted to recapture the special feeling that game gave me. To do that, I decided to start with the basic Harvest Moon ‘formula’ and then expand on it in my own way.” The point is not that every later farming game must transform its influences as dramatically as Barone did. It is that influence has a lineage, and originality is better judged by what a game makes of its starting point than by whether it has one.
A useful criticism of the genre, then, is not “this game has farming, relationships, or a town, so it is a copy.” It is whether the familiar elements have been assembled into a game with its own purpose. Does the farming loop create a different kind of decision-making? Does time create pressure, or is play deliberately unhurried? Are goals open-ended or strongly directed? Do relationships change what the player does, or mainly fill out the expected town? Does the setting or a distinctive mechanic reshape the formula? Those questions help distinguish a shared vocabulary from a carbon copy.

“Cozy” describes a feeling, not a single design blueprint
Cozy games can aim for different balances of repetition, relaxation, challenge, and emotional support. A Washington Post feature published January 18, 2023, illustrates the range through designers’ explanations of their work. Wren Brier said the team behind Unpacking wanted to keep player frustration low because they considered it a “Zen” game, while still making it a puzzle with many solutions. Paul Jessup described Bad Writer as a supportive space for artists, built around the message that rejection is part of the experience.

Treating “cozy” as shorthand for a standard checklist risks confusing a broad mood or player experience with one particular game loop. A farming sim can be cozy; so can a low-frustration spatial puzzle or a game designed to encourage its players. The label alone cannot establish that two games are doing the same thing.

Rusty’s Retirement shows how an influence can become a different game
Rusty’s Retirement is a useful example of visible influence without a one-source explanation. GamesRadar+ reports that developer Jordan Morris looked to Stardew Valley, but the game’s narrow horizontal presentation drew on Microcivilization, and its automation idea emerged through Morris’s own design exploration. The result can acknowledge a predecessor while changing the format and emphasizing a different mechanic.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
That does not settle whether every game influenced by Stardew Valley adds enough of its own. It does show why resemblance should be examined feature by feature rather than treated as a verdict: a recognizable farming influence can coexist with other inspirations and a distinct design direction. GamesRadar+’s report on Rusty’s Retirement describes those influences.

The strongest version of the “bad influence” argument is conditional. If developers reproduce a recognizable bundle of farming, routine, relationships, and open-ended progression because that bundle is legible and successful, but do not give it a new design purpose, players may encounter more variations on a template than genuinely different experiences. That is a real risk of a popular reference point becoming a default.

But the evidence here does not establish how many cozy games follow that pattern, nor does it demonstrate a market-wide decline in originality. Barone’s comments support the claim that Stardew Valley inspired more interest in farming and life sims; the examples show that influence can be mixed with other sources and transformed. Neither proves that the genre as a whole has become derivative. The fair conclusion is that Stardew Valley can be a bad influence when its recognizable package substitutes for a point of view—not simply because later games learned from it.
