Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe VR hype has cooled, but VR itself has not disappeared. Sales and shipments are under pressure, while millions of headsets remain in use and people continue to spend on VR content. The more accurate picture is a functioning, niche market—not a technology on the verge of universal adoption, and not a dead category.
What the numbers say about VR’s momentum
The evidence points in two directions: contraction in hardware sales, alongside continued use and spending. These measures describe different parts of the market, so they should not be treated as interchangeable.

| Measure | Reported figure | What it tells us |
|---|---|---|
| Consumer VR headset sales | 6.9 million units in 2024, down 10% from 7.7 million in 2023, according to Omdia | Annual consumer headset sales declined. This is not a count of all VR devices or owners. |
| Active VR headsets | 21.9 million in 2024, down 8%, according to Omdia | A substantial installed base remained in use, though Omdia estimated it had also fallen. |
| Consumer VR content spending | $904 million in 2024; Omdia forecast $1.3 billion by 2029 | The 2024 figure is reported spending. The 2029 figure is a forecast, not a realized result. |
| Global XR headwear shipments | 1.9 million in the first half of 2026, down 38.7% year over year, according to Omdia | This broader category includes XR glasses as well as headsets, so it is not a like-for-like update to annual consumer VR headset sales. |
Omdia reported the 2024 headset sales, active-use estimate and content spending in its December 2024 release. Its September 2026 release reported the first-half XR shipment figure. Because the categories differ, these numbers show a cooling market but should not be combined into a single year-by-year series.

Steam offers one narrow view
In its optional September 2026 hardware survey, Valve found VR headsets among 1.35% of surveyed Steam users. That is a measure of Steam’s participating PC-connected audience, not a global adoption rate. It also does not capture everyone using standalone headsets without Steam.

The survey’s device mix included Quest 3, Quest 2, Quest 3S, Valve Index, Pico 4 and PS VR2. It is useful for seeing which headsets appear among participating Steam users, but it cannot establish how many people worldwide own or regularly use VR. See Valve’s Steam Hardware & Software Survey.
There is still a consumer VR ecosystem
Meta’s FY2025 filing describes Meta Quest devices and Horizon Store content as current VR offerings, with uses including gaming, fitness, entertainment and social experiences. That establishes an active commercial platform, not that every listed use is equally popular or that the category is growing. Meta’s product and use-case descriptions are the company’s own; its filing does not report Quest unit sales.

Why the headlines increasingly include glasses
VR headsets and lighter XR glasses are not substitutes in every situation. A headset can provide a more immersive environment for games or training; glasses may be easier to wear and use for viewing or other less immersive tasks. Greater convenience does not automatically replace the depth of a headset experience.
Omdia said XR glasses represented 25.8% of XR headwear shipments in the first half of 2026, up from 10.2% in the first half of 2025. These are shares of shipments, not of devices in use. In the same periods, Meta’s share of overall XR headwear shipments fell from 71.3% to 48.2%; that too is shipment share, not installed-base market share.

Omdia Senior Analyst Qiran Ju said, “XR glasses are gaining momentum because consumers are increasingly willing to trade some immersion for less friction.” The observation is about the appeal of XR glasses and the barriers to adoption, not evidence that glasses have replaced VR gaming headsets.
What Meta’s investment does—and doesn’t—show
Meta reported $21.40 billion in total Reality Labs investments in 2025. That figure covers a broader portfolio, including VR and AR devices, software and content, neural interfaces, and other long-term technology work; it is not a standalone VR spending total.

Meta expected about 70% of Reality Labs operating expenses in 2026 to go to wearables initiatives and 30% to VR and Horizon initiatives. This allocation indicates that the company’s emphasis spans more than VR headsets. It should not be read as proof that VR has been abandoned, nor as a measure of the whole industry’s investment. The figures and descriptions come from Meta’s FY2025 Form 10-K.
So, has the hype passed?
If “hype” means expectations of rapid mass adoption, the latest evidence gives reason to be skeptical: consumer headset sales declined in 2024, and broader XR headwear shipments fell in the first half of 2026. If it means that VR has stopped being used or sold, the evidence does not support that either: Omdia estimated 21.9 million active headsets in 2024 and $904 million in content spending, while Meta continues to describe Quest hardware and content as current offerings.

- 256GB Storage Capacity
- Top VR Experience: Oculus Quest 2 features a blazing-fast processor, top hand-tracking system, and 1832 x 1920 Pixels Per Eye high-resolution display, offering an incredibly immersive and smooth VR gaming experience.
- Anti-Slip Controller Grip Covers: grip covers are made of nice silicone material that effectively prevents sweat, dust, and scratches. Anti-slip bumps enhance the handgrip and feel.
- Adjustable Knuckle Straps: knuckle straps make it possible to relax your hands without dropping the controllers. High-quality PU material offers extra durability and velcro design makes it easy to adjust the strap length to different needs.
The clearest conclusion is that VR is settling into a smaller, more established role. It remains a real gaming and entertainment platform, but hardware momentum is weak and lower-friction devices are attracting attention. Shipment research, company filings and an optional Steam survey each illuminate only part of the picture; none provides an exact global count of VR owners or proves that mass adoption is imminent.
