hdchapi.dll is a 32-bit third-party DLL associated with Seagate Info. Its internal description is “Seagate Open OLAP,” a reporting and online analytical-processing component from Seagate Software, Inc.
The safest fix is not to download hdchapi.dll and copy it into System32. Repair or reinstall the original Seagate Info installation, or the older reporting application that installed it. If the program is no longer needed, remove the program and its stale startup entry instead.
What hdchapi.dll belongs to
hdchapi.dll is not a Windows system file. It is associated with Seagate Info and may also be present in older Seagate or Crystal Reports-era software, including some installations of FAS Report Writer.
That matters because Windows repair tools generally cannot recreate it. The file must come from the original application installer, installation media, enterprise software archive, or a verified backup from the same installation.

The exact build can vary between old application releases. Online listings disagree about architecture and reported file details, so a file size or version shown in a search result is not enough to validate a replacement.
Common hdchapi.dll error messages
You may see wording such as:
- “This application failed to start because hdchapi.dll was not found.”
- “The file hdchapi.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: hdchapi.dll. Please install the application again.”
- “Error loading hdchapi.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because hdchapi.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Failed to load hdchapi.dll.”
- “Cannot register hdchapi.dll.”
These messages do not all mean the same thing. If Windows says that the specified module could not be found, hdchapi.dll may be missing, or a dependency required by that DLL may be missing.
Before repairing anything, note:
- The name of the program showing the error.
- Whether the error appears at startup or only when opening a report.
- The application’s installation folder.
- Whether the problem began after antivirus action, disk cleanup, a backup restore, an uninstall, or moving the program to another drive.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the application that needs the DLL
Time needed: 15–45 minutes, depending on the installer
This is the fix most likely to work because it restores the complete application, not just one file.
Identify the parent application
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for a Seagate, Crystal Reports, reporting, or unknown entry connected with the error.
- Right-click a relevant entry and choose Open file location.
- In File Explorer, right-click the application executable and select Properties.
- Check the Details tab for the product name and publisher.
- If the error appears only after opening a particular program, use that program’s shortcut:
- Right-click the shortcut.
- Choose Properties.
- Read the Target field.
- Open the folder containing the target executable.
Do not delete hdchapi.dll or the application folder while identifying the program. If the parent executable is unknown, scan the file and folder with Windows Security before restoring anything.
Use the application’s own repair option
If the program appears in Windows’ installed-app list:
- Press Windows+I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for Seagate Info, the reporting application, or the program identified in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Modify, Change, or Repair, if available.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the original application and test the operation that previously failed.
Older installers may instead provide repair through Control Panel:
- Press Windows+R.
- Enter
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Change or Repair.
- Complete the wizard and restart.
If there is no repair option, reinstall from the original CD, archived installer, enterprise software image, or another verified organisational source. Use the same release family and application architecture when possible.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not install only a loose copy of hdchapi.dll. The application may also require matching configuration files, report libraries, language resources, licensing information, and other legacy components.
If the installer will not run
Try these steps:
- Copy the installer to a local folder such as
C:InstallersSeagate. - Right-click the installer and select Properties.
- On the General tab, select Unblock if that option is present.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Right-click the installer again.
- Choose Run as administrator.
- If it still fails, right-click it and select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Try the Windows release suggested by the installer’s documentation or the environment where the program previously worked.
- Select Run this program as an administrator.
- Select Apply, then run the installer again.
Compatibility mode cannot create a missing DLL, but it can allow an old setup program to complete.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Security software may have quarantined the file during a scan, especially if the application is old, unsigned, or installed from archived media. Age alone does not prove that the file is malicious.
Windows Security
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Look for an entry naming
hdchapi.dllor the application folder. - Expand the detection and review its path.
- Restore the file only if:
- The path is inside the known application installation folder.
- The application came from trusted original media or an organisational archive.
- The surrounding installation is still intact.
- You have confirmed that the application actually requires it.
After restoring the file, start the application. If the file is quarantined again, stop. Do not repeatedly restore it and do not create a broad antivirus exclusion. Have the original installer and the complete application examined, or reinstall from a known-good source.
If the file was in a temporary folder, a user-profile download folder, or an unexpected location, do not restore it merely because its name matches the error.
Fix 3: Restore the complete application folder if it was moved
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A legacy program may stop working after its folder is copied to another drive, restored incompletely from backup, or launched from a different computer. The DLL can be present and still fail because its dependencies, configuration, licensing files, or expected path are missing.
- Right-click the program’s shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Record the folder shown in Start in and the executable path in Target.
- Open that folder in File Explorer.
- Check whether
hdchapi.dllis next to the application executable or in another folder installed by the same program. - Compare the folder with a verified backup or the original installation media.
- Restore the complete application directory, not only the DLL.
- If the program was moved manually, uninstall it and reinstall it to a normal local path.
- Start the program from its new installed shortcut.
A DLL copied from another machine may be a different build and may rely on files absent from the current system. Reinstalling the whole application is safer than replacing one file.

Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Available file information identifies hdchapi.dll as a Win32, or 32-bit, DLL. Some online metadata conflicts with that description, so do not use a web listing to decide which architecture to install.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A 32-bit legacy application normally loads its own 32-bit DLL from the application directory. It does not need a third-party DLL copied into Windows system folders.
On 64-bit Windows:
System32is the native 64-bit system directory.SysWOW64contains 32-bit Windows system components.- Neither folder is a general-purpose storage location for third-party application DLLs.
Do not copy hdchapi.dll into both folders. Do not place it in either folder unless the original application installer explicitly does so.
To check the application architecture:
- Open the program’s installation folder.
- Right-click its main executable.
- Select Properties and open Details.
- Check the product information if available.
- If the program is clearly an old 32-bit application, keep its matching DLL in the application’s installation structure.
- Reinstall the application rather than manually mixing 32-bit and 64-bit files.
If the DLL is present but still cannot load, the problem may be a missing dependency. Check the application’s installer, its error log, and Event Viewer:
- Press Windows+R.
- Enter
eventvwr.msc. - Press Enter.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error at the time the program failed.
- Record any separately named missing DLL or runtime.
Install a Visual C++ Redistributable only when the error specifically names a runtime such as MSVCP*.dll, VCRUNTIME*.dll, or api-ms-win-crt*.dll. hdchapi.dll is not itself part of the Visual C++ Redistributable.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 20–45 minutes
This step is useful when Windows itself is damaged or when several unrelated applications are failing. It normally will not restore the proprietary Seagate DLL.
First install pending Windows updates:
- Press Windows+I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart if requested.
Then run Microsoft’s repair sequence in the correct order:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
Microsoft documents DISM and SFC in its System File Checker instructions.
Success means DISM completes without an error and SFC reports that it repaired or found no integrity violations. If the application still reports hdchapi.dll, return to repairing or reinstalling the parent application. SFC does not normally have a copy of this third-party file to restore.
Repeating these commands will not substitute for an application installer. If you are manually hunting through Windows components and cannot tell what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can show reported system issues in a scan; repairs are performed by the full version, and reinstalling Seagate Info remains the definitive fix for this application DLL.
Fix 6: Update or reinstall a separately identified driver or runtime
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
hdchapi.dll is not a device driver, and Device Manager will not normally repair it. Do not use Device Manager as a substitute for reinstalling Seagate Info.
Use Device Manager only if the same failure also identifies a hardware driver problem:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category for the affected device.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Review the provider and date.
- Use Update driver only with a driver from the computer or device manufacturer.
- If the device is malfunctioning after a recent change, use Roll Back Driver when available.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Do not install a graphics, storage, audio, or chipset driver merely because hdchapi.dll is missing. There is no verified connection between this DLL and a particular modern hardware driver.

Do not routinely use regsvr32
Time needed: Not applicable unless the vendor confirms registration is required
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide the appropriate COM self-registration entry point. There is no verified evidence that hdchapi.dll is such a DLL.
A missing-file error does not normally mean the file needs registration. Running the command can produce “entry point not found” and may confuse the diagnosis.

Time needed: 5–15 minutes
If the error appears during startup but you no longer use the old reporting application, remove the parent application instead of replacing the DLL.
- Press Windows+I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the reporting application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Complete the uninstall wizard.
- Restart Windows.
For older programs:
- Press Windows+R.
- Enter
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the parent application.
- Choose Uninstall.
If the startup prompt remains:
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable the entry only after confirming what it launches.
- If it points to an uninstalled program, remove the application through its proper uninstaller or investigate the remaining startup entry.
A stale startup entry may be harmless, but an unexpected executable in a temporary directory or user-profile folder should be scanned before removal.
Use System Restore only for a recent known change
Time needed: 20–60 minutes
System Restore is reasonable when the error began immediately after a known installation, cleanup operation, or system change and no application installer is available. It is not a validated source for hdchapi.dll.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Open Start.
- Type Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
- Test the application.
Do not use System Restore if you cannot identify a suitable restore point or if restoring would remove important software changes.
What caused the error
The most common causes for this file are:
| Cause | Appropriate response |
|---|---|
| Incomplete installation or deleted application files | Repair or reinstall the original reporting application |
| Antivirus quarantine | Verify the path and provenance, then restore only a trusted file |
| Application folder moved or partially restored | Restore the complete installation or reinstall it |
| Missing dependency | Identify the separately named dependency and install its official runtime |
| Windows component corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Obsolete application no longer required | Uninstall the parent program and remove its stale startup entry |
| Wrong architecture or mixed files | Reinstall the matching application release and keep files in its own directory |
Disk cleanup and backup restoration can also remove or separate files that the old application expects. If the issue started after either event, compare the complete application folder with the backup rather than searching for a single DLL.
When nothing works
If reinstalling the parent application does not help:
- Confirm that the program is actually the one requesting
hdchapi.dll. - Check the application executable’s folder and permissions.
- Run the program once as administrator to test whether access is the issue.
- Review Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application for a dependency name.
- Check whether the old application supports the current Windows release.
- Test the application in the same controlled environment where its installer originally worked.
- Ask the organisation that supplied the software for its archived installer or application image.
- Preserve the existing installation before making further changes.
There is no verified current standalone Seagate download for hdchapi.dll. The safe sources are the original Seagate Info or reporting-application installer, trusted original media, a verified organisational archive, or a backup from the same installation.
FAQ
Is hdchapi.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with third-party Seagate software, particularly Seagate Info, and is not a standard Windows component.
Should I copy it into System32?
No. A 32-bit application generally loads its matching DLL from its own installation directory. Copying a third-party file into System32 or SysWOW64 can create architecture and version problems.
Can SFC restore hdchapi.dll?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows components. It does not normally contain proprietary Seagate application files.
Should I register hdchapi.dll?
Not as a routine step. Registration is relevant only if the DLL is confirmed to expose the required COM registration entry point and the original application requires it.
Is the file malware because it is old?
Not necessarily. It is an obsolete application DLL, not automatically malware. Verify its location, signature, installer source, and surrounding application before restoring it.
Why does Windows say the specified module could not be found when the file exists?
The DLL itself may be present while one of its dependencies is missing, incompatible, or inaccessible. Check the application’s installation, Event Viewer, and any separately named runtime in the error.
What if I no longer need Seagate Info?
Uninstall the parent application. If the message is only a startup prompt, identify and remove the stale startup entry after confirming what it launches.
