The safest fix is to close Microsoft Office, then repair or reinstall the Ruta or ProLing Office installation that originally supplied it.
What this file actually does
The file is identified as Ruta Hyphenator API v3 DLL. It belongs to Ruta Hyphenator, software developed by ProLing Ltd. Ruta provides language tools including Ukrainian and Russian spelling, hyphenation, thesaurus, and grammar functions, with integration for Microsoft Office and older Windows versions.
That explains why the error may appear when launching an old Office-integrated language tool, opening Word, or starting another legacy application that uses Ruta. There is no verified Microsoft runtime, DirectX package, .NET package, or Windows component that installs mshy3ua.dll.
Independent file metadata describes the DLL as a Win32 file of approximately 100 KB and reports version 1.0.34.0. Those values are archive metadata, not current vendor-certified binary information. They should not be used to select a replacement download.

The exact application that loads the file is not publicly established for every installation. The useful question is therefore not “Which Windows folder should contain this DLL?” but “Which installed program is trying to load it?”
Causes by symptom

Reported messages include “mshy3ua.dll was not found,” “The program can’t start because mshy3ua.dll is missing,” “Cannot find mshy3ua.dll,” and “Error loading mshy3ua.dll.” Wording varies by application and Windows version.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall Ruta first
This is the most likely solution because mshy3ua.dll belongs to Ruta rather than Windows.
Before changing anything:
- Save your work.
- Close Word, Outlook, Excel, and every other Office application.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select any remaining Office or Ruta-related process.
- Choose End task only if it is clearly still open.
- Restart Windows if Office will not fully close.
Try Windows application repair
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for Ruta, ProLing, ProLing Office, or the application that displays the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the entry.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Try opening the application again.
Microsoft documents this general repair and removal process in its guide to fixing programs that cannot be installed or removed.
If the application has no Repair button, use Uninstall and then reinstall it from the original ProLing installer or an installer supplied directly through the vendor’s support channel. Do not use a standalone DLL as a substitute for the installer.
Perform a clean reinstall when repair fails
- Close Office again.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Remove Ruta, ProLing Office, or the affected parent application.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer as an administrator.
- Keep the default installation location and options unless the vendor’s instructions require something else.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Test the same application that originally displayed the error.
A vendor-directed clean reinstall procedure may include removing a ProLing registry key. Do not delete registry entries casually. Create a registry backup first, and only follow that step when instructed by ProLing support or the official installer documentation.
Success looks like this: the parent application opens without the mshy3ua.dll message, and the Ruta language features are available.
If it fails: record the exact application name, full error text, installation location, Office architecture, and whether a new mshy3ua.dll appears in the application directory. Give those details to ProLing support instead of repeatedly replacing the DLL.

Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine an old language component. A filename match alone does not prove that a file is safe or genuine.

- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Expand entries that appeared when the error began.
- Check the detected file path, detection name, and action taken.
If the quarantined file is in the known Ruta installation directory and the installation came from a legitimate ProLing source, contact ProLing for confirmation before restoring it. If the path points to a temporary folder, a download directory, or an unknown program, do not restore it.

The safer recovery when you are uncertain is to reinstall Ruta from its original or vendor-provided installer. That replaces the complete application and its dependencies rather than restoring one possibly altered file.

After reinstalling, run a full Windows Security scan if the file was unexpectedly detected:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Scan options.
- Select Full scan.
- Choose Scan now.
Fix 3: Check Office and application architecture
Independent metadata identifies mshy3ua.dll as Win32, but that does not establish every installation’s complete architecture. A 32-bit language component can be used by 32-bit Office on a 64-bit Windows computer.
Do not assume that 64-bit Windows requires a 64-bit copy of this file. The relevant match is usually between the calling application, Office integration, and the Ruta component.

In Word or another Office application that still opens:

- Select File.
- Choose Account.
- Select About Word, About Outlook, or the corresponding About option.
- Read the architecture shown in the dialog, such as 32-bit or 64-bit.
If Office will not open, check its installation details in Settings > Apps > Installed apps, or use the original Office installer information.
Reinstall the Ruta component that matches the affected Office installation. Do not install separate copies into both System32 and SysWOW64. On 64-bit Windows, those folders have different system roles, and neither is automatically the correct home for an application-owned DLL.

Fix 4: Do not copy the DLL into a Windows system folder
Random DLL download sites websites are risky. A downloaded file may be tampered with, built for a different architecture, the wrong version, or missing the dependencies that caused the error. It can also hide the actual problem in the parent application.
Do not copy an unverified mshy3ua.dll into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- The Windows directory
- Several folders at once
Do not install both 32-bit and 64-bit copies merely because the computer runs 64-bit Windows.

A standalone DLL is not a complete repair.
Fix 5: Do not use regsvr32 by default
regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that expose the COM registration entry point DllRegisterServer. There is no reliable public evidence that mshy3ua.dll is a COM or ActiveX server.
Running a command such as this without vendor instructions is not a proper fix:
regsvr32 mshy3ua.dll
It may produce an error saying that the entry point was not found, or it may create unrelated registration changes. Microsoft explains this behavior in its DllRegisterServer troubleshooting guidance.
Use regsvr32 only if ProLing specifically tells you to register this file and provides the correct file path and command for your architecture. Otherwise, repair or reinstall Ruta.

Fix 6: Check whether another dependency is missing
“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean that the named DLL itself is absent. Windows can display that message when mshy3ua.dll exists but one of the libraries it needs cannot load.
Check the parent application directory:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Ruta, ProLing Office, or the affected application.
- Open its advanced options or installation details if available.
- Note the installation location.
- Look for
mshy3ua.dllin that application directory. - Do not download a replacement if the file already exists.
If the file is present but the application still fails, reinstall the parent application. The installer is more likely to restore the correct dependency set than a manually copied DLL.
Visual C++ Redistributable packages are relevant only when the actual error identifies a missing Visual C++ runtime or another application clearly requires one. They do not document mshy3ua.dll as one of their components. If a separate runtime error appears, use Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads and match the application architecture.

DirectX and .NET should not be installed merely because the missing item ends in .dll. The legacy DirectX End-User Runtime supplies optional legacy DirectX libraries, not mshy3ua.dll.

DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components. They are unlikely to recreate a missing ProLing DLL, so run them when other Windows programs or system files are also malfunctioning, not as the first response to this file.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its system file repair instructions.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test Windows and Ruta again. If it reports that it could not repair some files but the only problem is mshy3ua.dll, return to the Ruta reinstall rather than repeating SFC.

Fix 8: Consider drivers only when the timing supports it
mshy3ua.dll is an application language component, not a graphics, audio, chipset, or Windows device driver. Device Manager is therefore not a normal fix for this error.
Check drivers only if the problem began immediately after a hardware change and other applications are also failing:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the changed hardware.
- Right-click the device.
- Choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Review the provider, date, and version.
- Use Roll Back Driver only when the button is available and the issue began after that update.
- Otherwise choose Update Driver and use the hardware manufacturer’s official source.
Do not replace a device driver simply because a language application names mshy3ua.dll. If the issue is actually a stale or mismatched driver, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; installation through the full version is optional, and driver repair does not replace the definitive Ruta reinstall.
Fix 9: Use System Restore or Windows recovery only when appropriate
System Restore can help when the error started immediately after installing or removing software, changing system settings, or restoring a problematic backup.
- Open Start.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the change.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore if the timing clearly matches.
This does not replace a proper Ruta installation and may not be available.

- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now if the option is available.
- Follow the prompts.
These are recovery options for broader Windows problems, not the normal first-line solution for an application-owned DLL. Microsoft lists these choices in its Windows recovery options and documents the Windows Update repair reinstall separately.
Diagnostic checklist when the error persists
Collect these details before contacting ProLing or troubleshooting further:
- The exact program that shows the error
- The complete error wording
- Whether the error appears during Windows startup, Office startup, or only inside one application
- Whether Ruta, ProLing Office, or another language program is installed
- Whether
mshy3ua.dllexists in the parent application directory - Whether Windows Security quarantined the file
- Whether the issue followed an Office update, Office architecture change, uninstall, cleanup, backup restore, or antivirus event
- Whether Office is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether other Windows applications also fail
- Whether repair and a complete reinstall changed the error
If reinstalling Ruta changes “file not found” into “specified module could not be found,” the named DLL may now exist while a dependency is still missing. That information is useful to the vendor and points away from downloading another copy.
FAQ
Is mshy3ua.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is associated with Ruta Hyphenator from ProLing. It is not a standard Windows component and should not be copied into System32 or SysWOW64.
Is it malware?
The filename alone cannot establish that. A legitimate Ruta installation may contain the file, but an untrusted copy with the same name may be malicious. Check the file path, antivirus history, and installation source. When uncertain, reinstall the complete parent application from a trusted source.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not solely for this error. None of those packages is a documented source of mshy3ua.dll. Install a runtime only when the separate error identifies that runtime as missing.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
Not unless ProLing explicitly instructs you to do so. There is no reliable evidence that this file supports COM registration.
Is there a 64-bit version?
Independent metadata reports Win32 status, but that is not current vendor-certified binary information. Confirm the architecture of the calling application and Office installation, then install the matching Ruta component.
What if the original installer is unavailable?
Contact ProLing support, restore a known-good system backup, or migrate away from the obsolete integration. Do not rely on an unverified standalone DLL.
When should I use SFC or DISM?
Use them when multiple Windows components or unrelated applications are damaged. They are not expected to recreate a missing third-party Ruta file.
Why does the error remain after I copied the DLL?
The copy may be the wrong architecture, the wrong version, damaged, or missing a dependency. Remove the unverified copy and reinstall Ruta from a legitimate installer.
