If Windows says hdimon.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair or reinstall the Autodesk application that originally supplied it rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The file is described as “Heidi® OLE to ADI Port Monitor.” It is not a normal Windows component, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, or .NET file. Older Autodesk and AutoCAD installations may have included it, but the filename alone cannot identify the exact product or release.

What the hdimon.dll error means
Common messages include:
- “This application failed to start because hdimon.dll was not found.”
- “The file hdimon.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: hdimon.dll.”
- “Cannot find hdimon.dll.”
- “Error loading hdimon.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
These messages usually mean that an older Autodesk executable expected to find the file but could not load it. The cause is commonly an incomplete installation, accidental deletion, antivirus quarantine, or moving the application to another computer without installing it properly.

#1 Best Overall
Before fixing it, identify the program calling hdimon.dll
Do not begin by copying a DLL into a Windows folder. First determine which application is producing the error.
Check the error window
Note:
- The name shown in the title bar.
- The application name in the message.
- Whether the error appears during startup, when opening a drawing, or after selecting a device.
- Any executable path shown in the message or shortcut.
If the error appears while starting an old AutoCAD installation, repair that exact AutoCAD version. If it appears after launching another Autodesk application, repair that application instead.
Check the shortcut target
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read the Target field.
- Note the folder containing the executable.
- Select Cancel.
Repair the Autodesk installation associated with that path. This matters when multiple Autodesk versions are installed or when an old shortcut points to a removed installation.
Check Task Manager
If the error appears briefly:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Processes or Details.
- Look for the Autodesk or AutoCAD process.
- Right-click it and select Open file location, if available.
- Record the executable and installation folder.
Repair the version that owns that executable. Do not assume that repairing the newest installed Autodesk product will repair an older copy.
Fix 1: Repair the Autodesk application
Time needed: 10–30 minutes, depending on the installer.
Repair is the safest first step because it restores the complete application, its dependencies, and the correct architecture instead of replacing one isolated file.
For an older Autodesk product using the classic Windows installer:

- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Find the affected Autodesk or AutoCAD product.
- Select it.
- Choose Uninstall/Change.
- Select Repair, if offered.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the same application again.
If the repair completes successfully, the application should start without the hdimon.dll message.
If Repair is not listed, choose Reinstall when available. Some newer Autodesk products use a different installation framework and may require uninstalling and reinstalling instead of offering a repair option.

Use the original Autodesk installation media or the official Autodesk installation package. Autodesk Access can also provide supported Autodesk product packages and updates, but it is not a standalone download source for hdimon.dll.
If the installer asks for source files
The repair process may request the original setup files, installation disc, network location, or downloaded package. Use the same product media or official installer used for the original installation.

Fix 2: Reinstall the complete Autodesk product
Time needed: 20–60 minutes.
Use a full reinstall when repair fails, the installation was partially removed, or the error began after a cleanup utility deleted application files.
- Save your drawings, templates, custom profiles, and other personal Autodesk data.
- Close Autodesk applications.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected Autodesk product.
- Choose Uninstall/Change.
- Complete the uninstall process.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Install the same product from its original installer or an official Autodesk package.
- Apply the product updates intended for that release.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application using the shortcut you just installed.
If the error remains, check the shortcut again. It may still point to an old installation folder, a network share, or a removed drive. Create or use a shortcut from the newly installed product folder.
A legacy application may not be compatible with every modern Windows configuration. If the installer completes but the program still fails, keep the original installer and product documentation available for application-specific compatibility support.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes.
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine an old application file. Do not restore a copy merely because a DLL website says it is safe. First confirm that the file belongs to the genuine Autodesk installation.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any entry associated with the Autodesk installation.
- Check the detected file path and action.
- If the file came from the verified Autodesk installer, follow the available restore or allow instructions.
- Repair or reinstall the Autodesk application afterward.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined file can cause Defender to detect it again. If the file is detected repeatedly, do not keep forcing it back into the installation. Remove the questionable copy and reinstall the application from its official source.
If Protection history shows nothing, the file may have been deleted by another security product, a cleanup utility, or an earlier uninstall.

Fix 4: Check the file path and architecture
Time needed: 5–10 minutes.
Historical inventories generally identify hdimon.dll as a 32-bit Autodesk component. Conflicting third-party listings exist, so treat the affected application’s installer as the authority for the correct build.
A 32-bit legacy DLL should not be copied into both C:WindowsSystem32 and C:WindowsSysWOW64. Those folders are not interchangeable repair locations, and copying a file into them can create additional loading or security problems.
To check whether Windows is 64-bit:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read System type.
This does not tell you which version of hdimon.dll to download. It only describes Windows. The Autodesk installer determines where a 32-bit application and its files belong.
If hdimon.dll is visible beside the application but Windows still reports that a module is missing, repair the complete application. A dependent runtime or supporting file may be absent.
Fix 5: Run DISM and SFC as secondary checks
Time needed: 15–30 minutes.
DISM and System File Checker repair Windows components and protected Windows files. They do not normally reinstall a third-party Autodesk DLL, so use them after checking the Autodesk installation rather than instead of repairing it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Autodesk application.
DISM may repair the Windows component store. SFC may repair protected Windows files. Neither command guarantees that hdimon.dll will be restored.
If SFC reports that it found corrupt files but could not repair all of them, restart and run the commands again after DISM has completed. If the Autodesk error remains, return to the product installer.
Manually hunting corrupted Windows components and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what its repair process identifies; the repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the Autodesk application remains the definitive fix for this application-owned file.
Fix 6: Use System Restore when the timing is clear
Time needed: 15–45 minutes.
System Restore is useful if hdimon.dll disappeared immediately after a driver installation, cleanup tool, software removal, or Windows change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the results.
- Select Close.
- Select Next.
- Select Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, and installed programs. It does not replace personal documents, but applications installed after the restore point may need to be reinstalled.
If no suitable restore point exists, continue with Autodesk repair or reinstall rather than creating a restore point after the failure.
Fix 7: Investigate graphics drivers only for a graphics-specific error
Time needed: 10–30 minutes.
Do not reinstall a graphics driver solely because the filename contains “Heidi.” Autodesk also uses HDI terminology for display and output drivers, and an .hdi error is not proof that hdimon.dll is missing.
Use this step only when the message names an .hdi display-driver file, graphics acceleration, rendering, or a display adapter.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Note the graphics adapter name.
- Right-click the adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Autodesk application.
If the problem began after a driver update:
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver, if available.
- Restart Windows.
Do not use this procedure to replace hdimon.dll. GPU-driver work addresses display-driver problems, while hdimon.dll belongs to the legacy Autodesk application installation.
Finding the correct graphics-driver version manually can involve comparing hardware IDs, Windows builds, and vendor packages. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify available driver updates; installation through the full version is optional. It does not replace repairing the Autodesk application when hdimon.dll is the reported file.
Do not use regsvr32 for this error
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no authoritative evidence that hdimon.dll should be registered this way.
Do not run:
regsvr32 hdimon.dll
as a default fix. It will not restore a missing file, repair a broken Autodesk installation, or supply missing dependencies. It may instead produce an entry-point or registration error and distract from the real problem.
Use the Autodesk installer to place application files and configure the installation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Downloading hdimon.dll from a random DLL site can provide:
- The wrong historical build.
- A mismatched 32-bit or 64-bit file.
- A file with missing dependencies.
- An unsigned or modified binary.
- Malware or an unwanted bundled installer.
- A file that does not match the calling Autodesk product.
Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or beside an executable may make the message change without repairing the installation. It can also cause the application to fail later with a different dependency error.

Common causes and the correct response
| Likely cause | Correct response |
|---|---|
| Incomplete or corrupted Autodesk installation | Repair, then reinstall the exact product |
| Application moved to another PC | Install the complete compatible Autodesk application |
| Antivirus quarantine | Check Protection history, verify the source, then repair |
| Wrong file architecture or vintage | Obtain the file through the application installer |
| Damaged Windows components | Run DISM and SFC as secondary diagnostics |
| Damaged disk | Check disk health and reinstall from trusted media |
| Malware or modified DLL | Scan Windows, remove untrusted copies, reinstall Autodesk |
| Graphics-driver confusion | Use Device Manager only for .hdi or display-specific errors |
Why the error may persist after reinstalling
If reinstalling appears to do nothing:
- Confirm that you repaired the product named by the error.
- Check that the installer targeted the expected folder.
- Remove or update an old shortcut.
- Check whether antivirus immediately quarantined the restored file.
- Confirm that the application is not running from a network share or backup copy.
- Check whether multiple Autodesk versions are installed.
- Look for a missing dependency rather than assuming
hdimon.dllitself is absent. - Verify that the installer completed without errors.
- Restart Windows before testing again.
If the original installer is unavailable, locate the licensed Autodesk media, account download, deployment package, or organization administrator responsible for that product. Avoid substituting a file from another Autodesk release.
FAQ
Is hdimon.dll part of Windows?
No. It is identified as an Autodesk Heidi component, not a Microsoft Windows system file.
Is hdimon.dll a 32-bit or 64-bit file?
Available historical evidence generally identifies it as 32-bit, although conflicting listings exist. Use the affected Autodesk installer rather than choosing a file based on a download-site label.
Which Autodesk product installed it?
Historical evidence connects it with older Autodesk and AutoCAD installations, but the filename alone does not identify one definitive product release. Use the executable path and the application installer to determine the correct source.
Should I copy it into System32?
No. Do not copy an application DLL into Windows system folders. Repair the parent Autodesk application.
Will Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET reinstall it?
There is no authoritative evidence that these Microsoft runtimes install hdimon.dll. They are not the first repair step for this error.
Is hdimon.dll the same as an AutoCAD .hdi display driver?
No. The names are related to Autodesk’s legacy terminology, but an .hdi display-driver error concerns graphics or output configuration. It does not prove that hdimon.dll is the missing file.
When should I use SFC or DISM?
Use them when Windows itself appears damaged or other protected system files are failing. They are secondary checks and may not restore an Autodesk-owned DLL.
