Heat: Pedal to the Metal supports 1–6 players as a physical board game. You can race alone or with a smaller group by adding automated Legend drivers. The official Steam adaptation lists 1–12 players and includes single-player, online PvP, shared or split-screen PvP, Remote Play Together and cross-platform multiplayer. The physical game’s 1–6 figure comes from the current Days of Wonder product page and the core rulebook. The 1–12 figure belongs only to the Steam listing for the digital adaptation; it should not be used as the capacity of the boxed game.

One to six human players
The base board game is designed for one through six players. Six people can sit down for a full local race using the components in the base box, while a single person can run a race with automated drivers. The publisher lists a play time of about 60 minutes, although the actual session can vary with track, rules and player decisions.

At two to six humans, everyone takes a driver role and competes around the same track. Because turns are managed at the table rather than through a server, the physical version’s multiplayer mode is local: players need to be in the same place with the game set up in front of them.
Why the box says “1–6” rather than “2–6”
The lower limit is one because the rules include automated opposition. A solo player does not need to control six fully independent human hands. Instead, Legends supply additional cars and behavior so the race still has competition and a meaningful grid.
Can you play Heat: Pedal to the Metal solo?
Use the Legends Module
Yes. Days of Wonder describes the Legends Module as a way to add “legendary automated drivers” for solo play. The advanced rulebook treats Legends as bots that can run in solo games and also join multiplayer races. In practical terms, you select the number of human drivers, add the required Legend drivers, and race against the resulting field.
Legends are not extra human seats. They are automated opponents governed by the game’s rules. That distinction matters when you are planning a session: one person can play a complete race, but the other cars follow the Legend procedure rather than making choices through a second account or a computer connection.

Solo setup checklist
- Set up the track and race components as you would for a normal game.
- Choose your human driver and apply the solo rules from the core or advanced rulebook.
- Add the number of Legend drivers specified by those rules for the race you want to run.
- Resolve each Legend car according to its automated procedure whenever the rules call for it.
- Run the race and score the result using the normal end-of-race rules.
The exact number of Legends and their behavior depend on the scenario and rule module you are using. Follow the rulebook’s setup rather than assuming that every solo race should contain five automated cars.
How do you fill empty seats in a smaller group?
Adding bots to a two-, three- or four-player game
Legends can fill spaces when fewer than six people are available. For example, a group of three can add automated drivers to create a busier grid, or leave the race with only the three human cars if that is the group’s preference. The official Asmodee product description specifically presents bots as a way to add competition when fewer people play.
This makes the physical game flexible without changing its published human capacity. A five-person evening remains a five-human game even if you add a Legend; the automated car is an opponent, not a seventh human player.
When should you add Legends?
- Solo practice: Add Legends so one human driver has opponents and a target pace.
- Small groups: Add one or more automated cars when a sparse field would make the race less interesting.
- Learning a track: Use the standard Legend procedure while new players learn the cards, heat management and corner limits.
- Full-table play: With six humans, Legends are optional unless a scenario or house plan calls for a larger field.
Do not confuse the automated drivers with a separate expansion requirement for every game. The base game is the product that establishes the 1–6-player experience; Heat: Legends is an add-on for players who want the Legend system and related content.

What is Heat: Legends, and do you need it?
It is an expansion, not a standalone game
Heat: Legends is explicitly marked as not a stand-alone game. It requires an original copy of Heat: Pedal to the Metal to play. If you are buying your first copy, the relevant product is the base game, not the Legends box by itself.
The expansion’s role is to provide automated Legend drivers for solo races or to fill the grid in multiplayer. It therefore addresses a play-style need rather than increasing the base game’s stated six-human-player limit. Check the product description for the particular edition in your region before purchasing, because included components and availability can vary by market.
How many players does the digital Steam version support?
Steam lists 1–12 players
The official Steam listing gives the digital adaptation a capacity of 1–12 players. That is double the physical game’s six-player listing, but it describes the software version only. It does not mean that one boxed copy contains twelve driver sets or that a tabletop race can officially seat twelve humans.
The digital listing also identifies a single-player mode. Unlike the tabletop game, where solo opposition is described through Legends, the Steam page presents single-player as a built-in digital mode. The listing does not require you to translate the physical game’s player-count language into the software’s matchmaking or lobby limits.

Digital multiplayer modes
- Online PvP: Play against people connected over the internet.
- Shared or split-screen PvP: Multiple players can use the same local setup where the supported hardware and configuration allow it.
- Remote Play Together: Steam’s feature can let invited players participate remotely in a supported shared session.
- Cross-platform multiplayer: The Steam listing advertises cross-platform play. The listing does not define every participating platform or guarantee that every future platform combination is supported, so check the in-game or store compatibility details for your intended devices.
These features are specific to the official digital adaptation. They should not be used to infer that the physical game has online matchmaking or that every version shares the same save, lobby or account system.

iOS and Android availability is unconfirmed
The official sources currently documented for this title cover the physical products and a Steam version. They do not provide an official Apple App Store or Google Play listing. The careful conclusion is therefore that an official iOS or Android release has not been confirmed by those listings.
That is narrower than claiming that no mobile version can ever exist. Store catalogs and regional releases can change, and a mobile-device question may refer to remote access to a PC game rather than a native app. Unless you can verify a current listing from the relevant mobile storefront, treat “mobile” claims as unverified.
Steam is not the same as a phone app
A Steam listing identifies a PC digital product, not an Android or iPhone edition. Steam’s advertised cross-platform multiplayer also does not, by itself, establish that iOS or Android devices are included. Confirm the exact supported platform in the store listing and in the game’s current technical information before planning a phone-only session.

Physical versus digital: which player experience fits?

Choose the physical game if your group wants face-to-face racing and tactile cards, boards and cars. Choose the Steam adaptation if your priority is online competition, split-screen options or a larger listed player capacity. A solo tabletop buyer should budget for the base game first and consider Heat: Legends when automated opponents or a fuller grid are important.
Common player-count mistakes
Counting Legends as human players
A six-car race with four people and two Legends has four human players, not six. Keep those numbers separate when inviting people, checking table space or explaining the rules.
Applying the Steam number to the board game
The 1–12 figure belongs to the digital listing. The physical product and its core rulebook state 1–6. If a retailer or video description gives a different number, identify which edition it is describing before relying on it.
Buying the expansion without the base game
Heat: Legends cannot be used as a complete game. Its “not a stand-alone game” warning means you need the original Heat: Pedal to the Metal box first.
Assuming “cross-platform” means mobile
Cross-platform multiplayer on a Steam listing does not prove an iOS or Android port. It describes multiplayer across the platforms supported by that digital release, which must be checked separately.

- Want a tabletop race with friends? Buy the base game; plan for one to six human players.
- Want to play alone at the table? Use the Legends rules and add the Heat: Legends expansion only if you want that expansion’s content; the base game is still required.
- Have fewer than six people? Add automated Legends to increase competition, or play with only the humans present.
- Need online or split-screen play? The Steam adaptation lists online PvP, shared/split-screen PvP, Remote Play Together and cross-platform multiplayer.
- Need a native phone app? Do not assume one exists; the official iOS/Android release is unconfirmed in the available listings.

Heat: Pedal to the Metal is a 1–6-player physical game with solo and small-group support through automated Legends. Its official Steam adaptation is listed for 1–12 players with several local and online multiplayer options.
