How Hela’s Froggy Backpack changes exploration
Gliding and bouncing
Hela’s signature tool is the magical Froggy Backpack. It gives movement a playful, physical quality: players can glide, bounce from another player’s backpack and use the pack to reach or activate parts of the environment. This makes traversal itself part of the puzzle design instead of a simple way to move between points on a map.
In solo play, the backpack still supplies the game’s distinctive movement language. In co-op, the ability to bounce off another backpack creates a direct reason to coordinate positioning and timing. A route that looks impossible to one player may become practical when two players combine their movement.
Environmental problem-solving
The backpack is also used in environmental puzzles. Hela therefore sits closer to a movement-and-experimentation adventure than to a game focused on inventory management. Expect to test how the tool interacts with terrain and objects, rather than follow a combat progression or build a large catalogue of equipment.

A Short Hike is a single-player game set in Hawk Peak Provincial Park. Its central objective is simple: hike, climb and soar through the mountainside landscape until you reach the summit. The Steam release date is July 30, 2019, and its design is intentionally compact and self-directed.
Movement includes hiking, climbing, gliding, swimming and fishing. Those abilities let you choose your own route and decide whether to follow the obvious trail or investigate side paths. That structure creates a different kind of freedom from Hela. A Short Hike gives one player a small space to roam and a clear destination, while Hela promises an open world where movement experiments, cooperation and environmental puzzles are the main reasons to keep exploring.

Co-op versus single-player: the biggest practical difference
When Hela is the better fit
Hela is the stronger choice for a pair or group that wants a cozy co-op adventure rather than a game that happens to permit another player. The previewed local split-screen option suits two people sharing a screen, while online co-op is useful when players are in different locations. Both players can participate in movement experiments and puzzle solving instead of one person simply following the other.
Solo players are supported too. Playing alone removes the backpack-bouncing interaction, but leaves the exploration, gliding, experimentation, ingredient gathering and brewing loop. If you prefer to investigate at your own speed without coordinating jumps, solo Hela is still part of the intended structure.
When A Short Hike is the better fit
A Short Hike is explicitly single-player, so it is best for a quiet individual session. Its design does not ask you to schedule a co-op partner or manage split-screen space. You can pause your route, talk to characters and follow a curiosity wherever it leads without considering another player’s position.
The single-player format also reinforces the game’s personal scale. The goal is your hike, your route and your discovery of the park. Players seeking a shared outing should not treat A Short Hike as a substitute for Hela’s cooperative design.

World scale and the feeling of exploration
Hela’s open-world promise
Hela is framed as an open-world adventure. Its Northern Swedish inspiration points toward forests, wilderness and natural spaces connected by magical traversal. The open-world label matters because exploration is not only a short detour between story beats: the environment is the main place where you test the Froggy Backpack, find ingredients and uncover ways to solve problems.

The game’s emphasis on curiosity and small deeds suggests a low-pressure form of progression. You are not clearing enemy camps or chasing combat upgrades. Instead, the question is what the landscape allows you to do and how a movement idea can solve the next obstacle.
A Short Hike’s compact park
A Short Hike offers a smaller, more concentrated space. Hawk Peak Provincial Park is built to support a summit trip with optional discoveries around it. Side paths, fishing spots, swimming areas, hidden treasures and conversations add variety without turning the game into a large-scale open-world checklist.
This difference affects session planning. A Short Hike works well when you want a complete, focused excursion. Hela is aimed at players who want a broader place to revisit, experiment in and share with another person.
Activities, progression and what you are not doing
Hela’s activity loop
Hela combines several gentle activities: roaming through nature, cooperating on traversal, experimenting with environmental interactions, solving puzzles, gathering ingredients and brewing. These systems support one another. Exploration reveals ingredients and obstacles; movement helps you reach new spaces; experimentation shows how the world reacts; brewing gives collected ingredients a purpose.

There is no traditional combat loop to interrupt that rhythm. The developer’s clarification about the absence of item-creation and base-building crafting is important: do not expect a survival-game economy, a house-building system or a workshop full of upgrade recipes. Hela’s focus stays on discovery and use of the world as it is.
A Short Hike’s activity loop
A Short Hike’s activities are more conversational and recreational. You make progress toward the summit while choosing whether to fish, swim, search for treasures, talk with hikers or take an alternate route. The game’s movement abilities open paths and create reasons to wander, but they are presented as tools for a personal hike rather than as cooperative puzzle equipment.
The contrast is useful when deciding between them: Hela asks how you and a partner can interact with an environment, while A Short Hike asks what you notice when you are given a peaceful place and the freedom to roam.

Both games are gentle, but their kinds of gentleness differ. Hela is described as wholesome, heartwarming and centered on nature, kindness and harmony. For players who avoid combat but still want mechanical interaction, Hela offers more explicit puzzle and traversal systems. For players who want the least structured, most conversational walk through a compact setting, A Short Hike is the simpler fit.
Platforms and release status
Hela’s platform information needs a date check. A Steam community update from Windup Games gives a planned launch window of Q4 2026. The planned platforms listed in the available material are PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2.
At the same time, the official Hela website currently displays “NOW AVAILABLE ON STEAM.” Those statements conflict, so it is not responsible to present Hela as unquestionably released or to promise that every listed console version is available. Check the current Steam listing and the developer’s official site immediately before buying or planning a co-op session; storefront status can change after the dated community update.

Verify Hela’s current storefront status before purchasing, because its official pages do not yet agree on whether the Steam release has arrived.
