In Hell is Us, stamina is more than an attack meter: it is also the reserve you need to dodge or defend when an enemy threatens you. Use short attack sequences, pause to recover, and spend stamina on a dodge or parry when the enemy’s move calls for it. For weapons, there is no verified universal best choice: the official PlayStation page names swords, spears, and axes but does not rank them.
How to manage stamina without losing your defensive options
A guide to the game reports that stamina is used for light and heavy attacks, dodges, parries, and blocks. That means every attack has an opportunity cost: stamina spent extending a combo is stamina you cannot spend on an immediate defensive response. The practical goal is not to keep the meter full, but to avoid spending it so completely that you cannot react to the next threat.

The same guide reports that incoming hits temporarily reduce the maximum stamina available. In other words, being struck may make it harder to return to your preferred attack-and-defense rhythm. The guide does not establish the size or duration of that reduction, and the official PlayStation product page does not publish a stamina formula. Treat the effect as a reason to protect your health and reassess after taking damage, not as a precise calculation to build a fixed combo around.

Use compact attack sequences
Rather than continuing to attack until the stamina bar is nearly empty, make a deliberate pause between attack chains. A beginner guide updated in June 2026 recommends short attack strings and partial recovery between them. This gives you a moment to read the enemy and keeps some capacity available for a defensive move. It is a tactical recommendation, not a required combo length or official rule.

After a short sequence, watch both the enemy and your stamina. If the opponent is winding up, stop attacking and prepare to respond. If the enemy is not threatening you and you have room, allow some stamina to return before beginning another chain. The guide material does not establish an exact regeneration rate or a universally safe number of attacks, so use the visible state of the fight rather than assuming a fixed rhythm will work in every encounter.
Keep a reserve, but do not treat it as a magic percentage
The June 2026 beginner guide suggests reserving 20–30% of stamina for an emergency dodge or parry. That is a guide’s rule of thumb, not a threshold confirmed by the game’s publisher or an experimentally measured breakpoint. Use it as a reminder to avoid exhausting the meter, not as a promise that a particular percentage will always cover a response.
The useful reserve depends on what the enemy is doing and how much room you have. If a threatening wind-up is already underway, stop spending stamina on offense and keep enough available for the response you intend to use. If you are out of position, a dodge may be the priority. If you have read a predictable attack and are prepared to time a parry, leave capacity for that instead. The sources do not quantify the cost of either action, so do not assume that the same reserve guarantees both.

When to dodge—and when to stop dashing
Dodging can change spacing: the basic combat guide describes using it to create distance or close it. That makes a dodge useful not only as an answer to an incoming threat but also as a way to reposition. The same guide warns against repeated dashes that drain stamina. A dodge is most valuable when it solves a specific problem; using it automatically can leave you with fewer choices at the next attack.
Choose the direction for the position you need
Before dodging, identify what you want the movement to accomplish. If you need breathing room, use it to make distance. If you need to close a gap, a dodge can help you approach. Then reassess rather than immediately chaining another dash. The source establishes these spacing uses but does not specify a universally safe direction, a dodge distance, or a rule that one direction avoids every attack. Choose based on the enemy’s position and the space around you.
A useful decision sequence is:
- Read the threat. Look for the enemy’s wind-up instead of spending stamina on movement without a reason.
- Decide whether you need space or a new position. Use the dodge to create distance or close it, depending on the situation.
- Check your remaining stamina. Avoid another dash unless the next threat or repositioning need justifies the cost.
- Return to observation. Once you have moved, watch what the enemy does before committing to another attack chain.
This is a decision framework, not a claim that the game has a special dodge-cancel or guaranteed follow-up. The available sources do not establish exact invulnerability timing, recovery frames, or stamina costs for individual dodges.

How to read attacks and use parries
The guide material recommends watching enemy wind-ups and practicing parries against more predictable attacks. A guide/review describes a successful, well-timed parry as negating damage, staggering the enemy, and creating an opening to punish. Those are guide-reported mechanics; the official PlayStation page does not provide detailed parry timing or combat statistics.
Practice on readable attacks first
When you encounter an enemy whose attack is easier to anticipate, observe its wind-up before attempting a parry. The guide describes the timing as placing your weapon as the enemy attack connects. That is a narrow timing cue, not a specific number of frames or a universal button-timing formula. If you mistime it, return to watching the attack rather than trying to parry every move by habit.
A parry is not simply another way to spend stamina whenever an enemy is nearby. It asks you to read the attack and commit to precise timing. If you are uncertain about the tell, low on stamina, or unable to focus on the incoming move, prioritize a defensive response you can execute reliably rather than forcing a parry. The sources do not establish that every enemy attack can be parried.
Use the opening, then reassess
If a parry succeeds, the reported stagger and punish window create an opportunity to attack. Take advantage of that opening without assuming it will last for a fixed duration: no verified timing is available. Keep the same stamina discipline during the punish. A successful defense does not mean you should spend the entire remaining meter on offense, especially if the enemy can attack again as the opening ends.
One guide also includes blocking among the actions governed by stamina. It does not establish the exact protection, cost, or relative effectiveness of blocking compared with a dodge or parry. Choose among them according to the attack you have read and the stamina you have available; do not infer that one is always the cheaper or safer option.

PlayStation’s official Hell is Us product page describes combat against supernatural creatures and names swords, spears, and axes among the available weapons. It does not publish a category-by-category stat table, stamina costs, reach measurements, damage values, or a ranking. The available evidence therefore does not support calling any one category the best weapon overall.

Instead, choose a weapon by how well its moveset fits your decisions in combat. A weapon that lets you attack in a way you can control—and stop when you need to defend—is a more useful fit than a theoretical favorite whose timing or attack sequence repeatedly leaves you without stamina. That is a practical selection principle, not a claim about hidden weapon stats.
Compare what you can actually observe
When deciding whether to keep or change weapons, examine the information the game actually presents. If an in-game description or other visible information gives a comparative value, use it; do not assume the game exposes a particular stat or treat an unlisted value as known. Where the interface does not give a comparison, assess the moveset through play instead of filling the gap with assumptions about a weapon category.
- Attack control: Can you perform the moves you intend to use without extending an attack sequence by habit?
- Stamina discipline: Can you stop attacking and retain enough stamina for a defensive response?
- Spacing: Does the way you use the weapon fit whether you need to create distance or close it with a dodge?
- Defense after attacking: Can you recognize when to end the sequence and return to reading the enemy?
These are questions for evaluating your own use of a weapon, not verified differences between swords, spears, and axes. The sources do not support claims such as “spears have the safest reach,” “axes deal the most damage,” or “swords cost the least stamina.” Avoid choosing on the basis of those unverified category stereotypes.
Try a weapon without changing every habit at once
If you want to compare weapon types, change one thing at a time. Keep your stamina approach consistent—short chains, a pause to recover, and attention to enemy wind-ups—while you learn the new moveset. That makes it easier to tell whether the weapon suits your timing and decision-making, rather than confusing a change in your stamina habits with a difference in weapon performance.
Do not judge a weapon solely by how quickly you can keep attacking. The combat guides describe stamina as serving both offense and defense, so a weapon is not a good practical fit if using it encourages you to spend the whole meter before the enemy has finished its next threat. The sources give no numerical threshold for this judgment; your ability to retain a defensive option is the useful test.

The beginner guide recommends upgrading a primary weapon and defensive equipment. That is actionable advice, but the material available here does not provide upgrade costs, stat increases, required items, or an exact point at which an upgrade becomes worthwhile. Upgrade information should therefore be read from the game’s own presentation rather than estimated from a general guide recommendation.

A combat guide also says current health affects the available stamina ceiling. The relationship is not detailed on the official PlayStation page, and no formula or exact values are established. If you take damage and find that your stamina capacity feels constrained, treat that as a reason to be more conservative with attacks and prioritize survival. Do not calculate a stamina penalty from health using a percentage the sources do not provide.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor a primary weapon, the guide’s recommendation points toward upgrading the one you actually use rather than spreading attention across several weapons without a reason. Defensive equipment is also mentioned as an upgrade target. The material does not establish which upgrade gives the largest benefit or whether every upgrade affects stamina, so make the choice using the in-game description and the needs you have noticed in combat.
A practical combat loop
Put the advice together as a repeatable loop rather than a fixed combo recipe:
- Enter the exchange with stamina available. Do not begin by spending the entire reserve on repeated dashes or attacks.
- Watch the enemy. Look for the wind-up that tells you a threat is coming.
- Choose a response. Dodge to change spacing, or attempt a parry when you can read and time the attack. Blocking is another stamina-using action, but its exact trade-offs are not established by the available guides.
- Attack during a genuine opportunity. Use a short sequence rather than assuming you can safely continue until the meter is empty.
- Pause and reassess. Let some stamina recover when the fight allows it, and observe the next enemy action before committing again.
- Adjust after a hit. Because a guide reports that hits can temporarily lower the stamina ceiling, avoid treating your previous attack rhythm as automatically safe.
The loop does not depend on a particular weapon category or a hidden numerical breakpoint. It keeps attention on the information the guides do establish: stamina serves several actions, enemy tells matter, and defensive capacity can be lost if you spend too freely.
What the available evidence does—and does not—establish
The platform and edition context matters: PlayStation confirms a PS5 version and describes the game as a third-person action-adventure. Its official page identifies swords, spears, and axes, but is not a combat-stat guide. The stamina and parry details above come from guides, including a beginner guide updated in June 2026, rather than published developer documentation.

No firsthand testing is claimed. That means advice such as preserving a reserve or favoring short attack strings should be understood as tactics, not official requirements; weapon selection should likewise be based on the moveset and information you can verify in your own game rather than an unsupported universal ranking.
