In Tauriq Moosa’s The Verge review, published May 21, 2024, that presentation is the game’s great strength; constrained combat and familiar environmental puzzles are its main weaknesses.
What is Hellblade 2 about?
Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II follows Senua, a Pictish warrior who experiences psychosis, through a mythic Viking-era Iceland. She confronts slavers and giants, but the journey’s tension comes as much from uncertainty about what she sees and hears as from the threats themselves. The game keeps the player close to Senua’s perspective, making horror part of the way the world is presented rather than a separate series of jump scares.
Voices accompany Senua throughout. They contribute to the atmosphere and characterization, and at times also signal navigation or combat events. Their gameplay role grows naturally from the game’s central perspective: sound is not just decoration, but one of the ways the player interprets what is happening.
Why does the world stand out?
Moosa’s review praises the detail in faces and environments, the lighting, and the cinematic direction. He wrote, “This is the best-looking game I’ve ever played.” That is his personal assessment, not an objective ranking, but it captures how strongly the visuals shape his response.

The soundscape is equally important to the effect. Voices and unsettling drones give scenes an uneasy texture, reinforcing the sense that Senua’s experience may not line up neatly with an external, reliably understood reality. The result is a game whose strongest appeal is audiovisual immersion and directed atmosphere—not a large world full of systems to master.
How do combat, puzzles and exploration play?
Combat is focused, but can feel unresponsive
Encounters are built around one-on-one fights, with blocking, parrying, strikes and a focus ability. That close framing suits the cinematic approach, but Moosa found blocks and parries unresponsive at times and identified combat as the game’s weak point. Players looking for a deep combat system or frequent tactical variety may find the encounters limited.

Puzzles repeat familiar ideas
Environmental puzzles often ask players to match shapes or perspectives in the surroundings. The review notes some variation, but the basic idea recurs. These sequences support the game’s guided journey more than they offer a demanding puzzle challenge.
The journey is linear and guided
Exploration follows a directed route rather than opening into a broad, freely navigable world. That structure helps sustain the film-like pacing and focus on Senua’s experience, but leaves less room for wandering or choosing how to approach objectives.

How long is Hellblade 2?
Moosa reports finishing the game in about 10 hours. That is one reviewer’s playthrough, not a promised or typical completion time; pace and time spent exploring can vary.
What is Hellblade 2 Enhanced, and where can you play it?
Xbox Wire announced Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II Enhanced for August 12, 2025, with availability across Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Game Pass, Steam and PlayStation 5. The announcement says the Enhanced update is free for existing owners on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC and Steam; PlayStation 5 received a separate release. Platform features are not identical, so check the listing for the version you intend to play. The official Xbox store listing identifies Ninja Theory as developer and Xbox Game Studios as publisher, and lists Xbox Series X|S, PC, cloud and handheld play options. It rates the game Mature 17+ in the US for intense violence, blood and gore, and strong language. Store availability, prices and subscription terms can change.

Moosa’s review makes the choice hinge on what a player wants from the experience. The game is a strong fit for someone drawn to cinematic presentation, sound-led horror and a tightly guided story. Its limited combat and recurring puzzle format are more likely to frustrate players seeking elaborate fighting mechanics, difficult environmental puzzles or open-ended exploration.
