Choose Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice if you want a personal journey centered on one protagonist’s perception and experience of psychosis. Choose A Plague Tale: Innocence if you want a sibling survival story about Amicia and Hugo, pursued by the Inquisition amid supernatural threats. These are recommendations based on the games’ official descriptions, not a hands-on comparison.
How the stories differ
Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice follows Senua
Xbox describes Hellblade as an action-adventure following Senua on a Viking-age vision quest. Its official description foregrounds her perception and experience of psychosis, and notes collaboration with neuroscientists and people who experience psychosis. That makes it the closer fit if you want a story organized around one person’s inner experience.
A Plague Tale: Innocence follows Amicia and Hugo
Focus Entertainment describes Innocence as “An original story featuring two young orphans on the run from the Inquisition.” Amicia and her younger brother Hugo try to survive while pursued by Inquisition soldiers and surrounded by supernatural rats. The central appeal, based on that premise, is the siblings’ flight and relationship under pressure.
What the gameplay descriptions suggest
Xbox frames Hellblade broadly as an action-adventure. Focus describes Innocence as blending action and adventure. Those descriptions establish broad genre framing, but they do not support a detailed claim that one game is more difficult, more stealth-focused, or mechanically superior.

#1 Best Overall
- From the makers of Heavenly Sword, enslaved: Odyssey to the West, and dmc: Devil may Cry, comes a warrior's brutal journey into myth and madness
- Set in the viking age, a broken celtic Warrior embarks on a haunting vision quest into viking hell to fight for the soul of her Dead lover
- Created in collaboration with neuroscientists and people who experience psychosis, hellblade: senua's sacrifice will pull you deep into senua's mind
- A beautifully realized “award winning” experience
For a clearer indication of the series’ action options, Focus’s description of A Plague Tale: Requiem says players can choose stealth or direct confrontation, using weapons, tools, and unearthly powers. That description applies to the sequel; it should not be treated as a precise feature-by-feature comparison with Hellblade or as a complete account of Innocence.
Which game fits your priorities?
| If you want… | Better fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| A personal story shaped around one protagonist’s perception and psychosis | Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice | Its official Xbox description centers Senua’s journey and experience of psychosis. |
| A sibling relationship and a flight-for-survival premise | A Plague Tale: Innocence | Focus describes Amicia and Hugo trying to survive while pursued by the Inquisition and surrounded by supernatural rats. |
| Stealth or direct-action choices, weapons, tools, and powers | A Plague Tale: Requiem | Focus explicitly describes those options for the sequel. |
| The beginning of Amicia and Hugo’s story | A Plague Tale: Innocence | It is the first game; Requiem is its sequel. |
Where to start with A Plague Tale
Innocence comes before Requiem. Start with Innocence if you want to follow Amicia and Hugo’s story in order; choose Requiem knowing it is the sequel rather than the starting point. Focus lists Innocence for Xbox Series X|S, PS5, PS4, PC, and Xbox One, and also refers to a Nintendo Switch cloud version. Its Requiem page lists that game’s availability separately, so check the current store listing for your platform and region.

Check accessibility and content details by edition
Accessibility information can vary by platform and edition, so consult the store listing for the version you plan to play. The PlayStation listing for Hellblade describes visual alternatives for audio cues, individual volume controls, mono and 3D audio, and subtitles for the main story and main characters. Xbox’s listing describes adjustable combat difficulty and pausing during gameplay and cinematics, while specifying that the cited options apply to the Enhanced PC version. Do not assume those features are present in every edition.
Official store ratings identify mature content in both games: the Xbox listing for Hellblade notes blood and gore, strong language, and intense violence; the Innocence listing notes violence, blood and gore, and strong language. For age guidance, check the rating from the board that applies in your region.
