Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II presents a more advanced character-rendering and performance-capture context than 2017’s Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, and that can make Senua look more detailed and responsive. But there is no published developer side-by-side measurement of the two character assets, so claims about polygon counts, scan density, or a quantified realism upgrade would go beyond what is documented.
What looks different about Senua in Hellblade II?
In comparable close-ups, the sequel can appear more lifelike: facial movement reads more finely, and skin, makeup, grime, and other surface details are presented with greater visual richness. Those are visual impressions, not a measured asset comparison. A close-up in one game is not a fair test against a distant gameplay shot in the other, and lighting, camera distance, scene conditions, and animation all affect what is visible.
For a useful comparison, look at similar facial angles and distances, then watch expressions and movement across a scene rather than judging only a still portrait. The sequel’s presentation reflects both character work and the way the game renders its surroundings; not every difference in appearance means Senua’s underlying mesh changed.
What production changes help explain the difference?
A newer rendering context
Ninja Theory discussed moving Hellblade II from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5, including production use of Lumen, Nanite, and Virtual Shadow Maps, in a Digital Foundry interview published August 8, 2024. The discussion also covers facial animation and photogrammetry. These technologies provide context for the sequel’s presentation, but they do not establish that a particular visible feature came from one tool or that the character model has a specific resolution or polygon count.

Lighting and shading matter in close-ups: compare skin under similar kinds of light, and keep environmental differences in mind. A more convincing shadow or highlight may come from rendering and lighting rather than a change to the character’s geometry.
Performance capture and facial animation
The original was not made without performance capture. Tameem Antoniades, Ninja Theory co-founder and Chief Creative Director, described the in-house capture studio used during its development in an Unreal Engine interview. The studio let the team shoot scenes as needed.

For the sequel, a 2024 Xbox Wire production feature describes the performance-capture studio at Ninja Theory’s Cambridge headquarters and captured performances used in developing combat. Ninja Theory’s May 21, 2024 launch note says character animation starts as real movement from the cast. Together with the facial-animation discussion in the Digital Foundry interview, this helps explain why the sequel’s performance can feel more responsive. It does not mean the first game lacked captured acting.
The same actor plays Senua
Melina Juergens plays Senua in both games, according to Ninja Theory’s launch note. The changed presentation is therefore not explained by a new actor; it reflects the sequel’s production, rendering, and animation context as well as its visual design.

How to compare the models fairly
- Facial expression: Compare expressions in motion across scenes, not just static promotional images.
- Skin and makeup: Inspect makeup edges, dirt, blood, scars, and skin only in shots with reasonably similar framing and lighting.
- Hair, costume, and materials: Note visible design and surface-treatment differences, but do not attribute them to a particular technology unless the developer has done so.
- Motion: Account for whether you are watching gameplay or a cinematic, how long the shot lasts, and how close the camera is.
- Rendering versus model: Treat changes in lighting and environmental shading as presentation differences, not automatic evidence of a changed character mesh.
What is—and is not—known about the models
The production sources describe engine, rendering, photogrammetry, facial-animation, and capture practices. They do not publish a controlled side-by-side breakdown of Senua’s two character assets or useful comparative figures such as polygon counts, texture resolutions, scan density, or a numerical realism score. Photogrammetry is production context, not proof of the exact scan process or resolution used for every part of the character.
Epic’s 2019 announcement identifies Hellblade II as the sequel to the 2017 game and says its reveal trailer was rendered in Unreal Engine. For the games’ official identity and platform context, consult the Xbox page for Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II; its listings may change.
