Buying is usually the more dependable long-term choice if you replay a small, familiar set of games. Game Pass can cost less when you play enough included games during the months you pay, but access depends on an active subscription and each title remaining in the catalog. Compare the subscription’s cost over your actual paid months with the current prices of the specific games you replay.
How to work out your break-even point
- Choose your replay list and platform. Compare the same games you actually play on the device you use.
- Check each game’s eligibility. Confirm that it is in the relevant Game Pass plan and available in your region and on your platform. Catalog membership varies by time, region, plan, and platform; use the Xbox Game Pass catalog and the Xbox plan comparison.
- Count every paid subscription month. Calculate the plan’s regular monthly price times the number of months you expect to keep paying. Do not use only a trial or introductory offer if you will continue afterward.
- Add the purchase prices. Check current prices for the same replay games. Count a sale or member discount only if it is available to you and you would actually use it.
- Credit other included games only if you would play them. A large catalog is not a saving by itself; count its value only when those games and plan benefits are useful to you.
Formula: subscription cost for your chosen period = monthly plan price × paid months. Compare that total with the combined current purchase prices of your replay list. If you expect to play other included games, factor in their personal value separately rather than treating the entire catalog as money saved.

They are not guaranteed prices: region, taxes, introductory-offer eligibility, and later price changes can affect what you pay. Why replay habits change the answer
A few familiar games
If most of your playtime goes to a few titles, total their purchase prices and compare them with all the subscription months needed to keep playing. Buying can be the steadier value when you want access to those particular games beyond a short subscription period.
Many included games during paid months
Game Pass can be cheaper when you play several eligible games while subscribed. Include only games and benefits you would genuinely use, and make sure the plan you price includes the titles on your platform.

Access is part of the cost
Xbox says access to Game Pass games lasts until the subscription is canceled or expires, or the game leaves the library. The catalog page identifies games leaving soon and says members can buy a departing title to keep playing. When checked, it displayed a member discount of up to 20% on those purchases; that is conditional, not a blanket discount, so verify the title and offer before including it in a calculation. Buying is the alternative when you want continuing access to a purchased title, subject to that purchase’s license terms. The official pages describe subscription access but do not promise permanent ownership for a purchase, so the two choices are not identical lifetime guarantees.

Count renewals, not just the offer
Xbox says subscriptions continue at the then-current regular rate unless canceled, and automatic renewal is on by default. If a promotion rolls into a paid subscription, include the regular-rate months in your estimate. Xbox also describes a narrow possibility of a one-time refund for an unwanted recent recurring charge if canceled within 30 days; it is not a general cancellation guarantee.
