Devoid of Liberty update 7.0.0 added two Illuminate enemy types to Helldivers 2: the regenerating Crusher and the fast-moving Wretch. Weapon customization is a separate, older feature, introduced in May 2025; it unlocks at Level 10 through the Super Destroyer’s Armory.
What new Illuminate enemies did Devoid of Liberty add?
Arrowhead’s Devoid of Liberty 7.0.0 patch notes, released August 12, 2026, name the Crusher and the Wretch as new Illuminate enemy types. Their distinct behaviors call for different responses, but the notes do not prescribe a specific weapon counter.

Crusher
The Crusher is a heavy enemy that can regenerate while taking heavy damage. Arrowhead’s guidance is to wear it down quickly and consistently, rather than letting damage lapse and giving it time to recover.
Wretch
The Wretch is nimble: it dodges and leaps at players as it advances. Its movement makes quick reactions and focused aim important.

What else is in the Devoid of Liberty update?
The update also adds a biome and possible SEAF support as a planet modifier. When that modifier is active, friendly SEAF troops can support players with tools that include stim pistols and heavy machine guns. These are separate additions from the two Illuminate enemies.
PlayStation describes Devoid of Liberty as an update for Helldivers 2 owners on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X|S. Its game page notes that console gameplay requires internet access and a paid console subscription, sold separately.

When did weapon customization arrive?
Weapon customization did not launch alongside the new enemies. Arrowhead introduced it in Patch 01.003.000 in May 2025, with options for sights, color patterns, magazines, muzzles, and underbarrels. The patch notes describe these choices as affecting areas such as precision, ammunition capacity, weapon performance characteristics, and handling; they do not establish one best setup for every weapon.
Arrowhead’s customization support article says customization unlocks at Level 10. The article says only primary weapons can be customized at the time it was written and cautions that not every weapon will receive the feature. The available information does not establish the current customization menu or attachment options for every individual weapon.

How to unlock and use weapon customization
- Reach Level 10. Arrowhead’s support article identifies this as the customization unlock requirement.
- On the Super Destroyer, go to the Armory terminal, select an eligible weapon, then choose Customize.
- Take a weapon on missions to level it individually. Attachments unlock through that weapon’s progression and can be purchased with Requisition Slips.
- Save configurations and switch between them during the mission loadout sequence, as described in Arrowhead’s May 2025 patch notes.
What customization options are meant to change
Arrowhead’s patch notes describe the options in broad terms rather than giving a current, weapon-by-weapon effect list. They associate sight choice with precision, magazine choice with ammunition capacity, muzzle choice with weapon performance characteristics, and underbarrel choice with handling. Color patterns are also available. Check the options shown for the weapon you have unlocked; the documented categories do not support a universal recommended configuration.
Why these changes do not mean one loadout fits every faction
In a developer retrospective hosted on Steam Community, Arrowhead said: “We don’t want a one size fits all loadout for any Faction, you should always need to consider what you’re about to engage with.” That is the studio’s design aim, not a claim that any particular customized weapon has been independently proven to outperform another.
The enemy behaviors provide a practical distinction: the Crusher’s regeneration makes consistent damage central to Arrowhead’s guidance, while the Wretch’s dodging and leaps put a premium on reacting and aiming carefully. For customization, use the available options to suit your preferred handling and mission needs rather than assuming the update introduced a single best build.
