If Helldivers 2 hangs while loading onto or returning to your ship on PC, first restart the game and Steam, check for an update, and verify the installed files in Steam. These are low-risk checks, not a confirmed fix for every ship-loading hang: Arrowhead has documented a similar ship-intro problem in a 2024 patch, but its current guidance does not identify one universal fix for this exact symptom. The right next step depends on whether the hang happens at startup, after a mission, or during a different loading transition.
Identify which loading screen is stuck
Before changing settings or deleting files, note exactly where the failure occurs. A hang while first entering the ship, returning from a mission, and loading into a mission may have different causes; the available official guidance does not establish that they share one.
- Entering the ship after launching: Note whether the game is frozen, still animating, or showing a black screen.
- Returning from a mission: Record whether the hang begins as extraction ends, during the return transition, or after the ship appears.
- Loading into a mission or hellpod: Treat this as a separate transition and describe it precisely if you report the issue.
A black screen with the opening cinematic’s audio is a distinct startup symptom. Arrowhead’s specific instructions for that issue are covered below; they are not a general ship-loading fix.
Try low-risk Steam checks first
- Restart the game and Steam. Exit the game, fully close Steam, reopen it, and launch Helldivers 2 again.
- Check for a game update. Let Steam finish any pending download before launching.
- Verify the installed files. In Steam, open your Library, right-click Helldivers 2, choose Properties, open Installed Files, then select Verify integrity of game files. Wait for the check and any replacements to finish, then try the same loading transition again.
Arrowhead explains that a few files failing Steam validation can be normal: they are generated authentication files, not necessarily evidence of damaged game files. See its Steam validation guidance. Avoid repeatedly reinstalling just because a small number of files are replaced.

If 10 or more files repeatedly fail validation
Arrowhead’s September 10, 2026 guidance distinguishes a few normal validation failures from a recurring result of 10 or more files. If at least 10 files constantly need validation, it suggests updating drivers, reinstalling the game, or deleting the contents of the Helldivers 2 AppData folder. These are broader troubleshooting steps, not a confirmed cure for a ship-loading hang.
- Update drivers: Start with the graphics driver and follow the GPU manufacturer’s installation instructions.
- Reinstall: Use Steam to uninstall and reinstall the game if the validation problem persists.
- Clear game-specific settings: Back up the Helldivers 2 settings first. Removing the contents of its game-specific AppData folder resets all in-game settings, according to Arrowhead; do not delete the broader AppData folder.
Follow the exact scope of Arrowhead’s advice and read its full validation instructions before removing files.

Only use the adapter setting for the matching black-screen symptom
If the game starts to a black screen while the opening cinematic audio is still playing, Arrowhead’s October 6, 2026 article recommends changing adapter_index in %appdata%ArrowheadHelldivers2user_settings.config between 0 and 1, saving the file, and retrying. This instruction targets that black-screen-at-startup case. It is not established as a fix for a hang while loading onto or returning to the ship. What Arrowhead’s older ship-loading fix tells you
Arrowhead’s patch 1.000.11, published April 12, 2024, said it fixed an issue that caused players to get stuck “in the defrosting or in the ship intro cinematic.” That confirms a ship-intro hang existed in an earlier build; it does not establish that the same bug is present in the current build or that the historical patch’s fix applies to today’s loading failures. The patch notes are useful context, not a current workaround.

Report a repeatable hang
If the low-risk checks do not help, check Arrowhead’s current known-issues list and submit a support ticket for a persistent or repeatable problem. Arrowhead says clear reproduction steps help its QA team investigate issues that are not one-offs, and that screenshots or video are useful. Include:
- The game version and whether the problem began after a patch.
- Your Windows version, GPU model, and graphics-driver version.
- The precise transition where the hang occurs and whether the screen is frozen, animating, or black; note whether audio continues.
- Steps that reliably reproduce the problem, plus a screenshot or short video if possible.
