Use the R-36 Eruptor as a deliberate, distance-first explosive primary: pick a clear lane, aim at exposed or clustered enemies, and avoid firing when foes or teammates are close to the impact. Its shrapnel spreads in every direction, so a close shot can be dangerous to you and your squad. Against armor, impact angle matters; shrapnel is less effective at poor angles.
How to use the Eruptor effectively
Keep space between you and the impact
The community-maintained Helldivers Wiki recommends using the Eruptor at long range and lists its standard scope as 10x. Treat that as practical guidance rather than an official range specification: the available official notes do not publish a current effective-range figure. Before shooting, check whether an enemy has entered the near field and whether a teammate is near the target. If the line is crowded, switch weapons or reposition rather than forcing a shot. Choose exposed or clustered targets
The Eruptor’s blast and fragments make it suited to deliberate shots at exposed enemies or groups close enough for the explosion to matter. Arrowhead’s notes establish how shrapnel spreads, but do not provide a universal target-by-target kill recipe. Avoid assuming that every enemy will die in one shot; the reviewed sources do not establish faction-specific kill thresholds.
Mind armor impact angles
Arrowhead says shrapnel is less effective against armor when it hits at a poor angle. The fragments’ broad spread does not mean they reliably penetrate every armored surface from every direction. When attacking an armored target, look for an angle that exposes a more favorable surface rather than treating the weapon as a guaranteed armor answer. Arrowhead Game Studios, Patch 01.003.000.

Carry a close-defense option
Because the Eruptor carries close-range risk, it is sensible to have a sidearm or support weapon ready for enemies that get too near. The available sources do not establish one universally best pairing, so choose the option that covers the threats and mission you expect. This is a loadout principle based on the documented close-range warning, not a tested build ranking.
What the patch notes establish about its shrapnel
In Patch 01.001.00, Arrowhead said shrapnel had returned and documented 30 shrapnel projectiles at 110 damage, 225 explosion damage, and a 33% increase to explosion radius. Those are figures from that specific patch, not verified current stat-card values. Arrowhead Game Studios, Patch 01.001.00.

Patch 01.003.000 states: “With this update, shrapnel will now always spawn in a full 360-degree spread, regardless of where the explosion occurs.” The same patch notes say shrapnel’s effectiveness against armor was reduced at poor impact angles. Read these together: fragments can spread around the blast, but their interaction with armor still depends on impact angle. Arrowhead Game Studios, Patch 01.003.000.

Arrowhead’s October 7, 2026 Patch 7.1.0 notes list balance changes for other weapons but no Eruptor-specific change. That means only that no Eruptor change appears in those reviewed notes; it does not confirm every older value remains unchanged or rule out undocumented adjustments.
