Those figures compare simultaneous Steam players—not sales or total audiences across platforms.
Did Helldivers 2 pass God of War on Steam?
Yes. The February 9, 2024 comparison put Helldivers 2 ahead of God of War (2018) for peak concurrent players on Steam. GameSpot reported the figures, citing SteamDB: 81,840 for Helldivers 2 and 73,529 for God of War. GameSpot’s report.

“Concurrent players” means the number of people playing at the same time. It is not a count of copies sold, unique players over a period, or everyone playing on both PC and PlayStation 5.
What was Helldivers 2’s Steam player record?
The 81,840 figure was the launch-time peak in the comparison, not the game’s eventual all-time high. SteamDB records Helldivers 2’s all-time Steam peak as 458,709 concurrent players on February 24, 2024. SteamDB’s chart distinguishes that later peak from the earlier milestone.

How the games’ Steam launches differed
Helldivers 2 arrived on Steam and PS5 on February 8, 2024, launching on both platforms at the same time. God of War first released on PlayStation before its later PC release, so the comparison is specifically between their Steam audiences—not their original console launches. The concurrent-player figures do not show how many people were playing Helldivers 2 on PS5 when it passed the Steam mark.
What the Steam record does—and does not—show
A Steam peak is a useful measure of a game’s highest simultaneous activity on that store. It cannot establish total audience or total sales across platforms. Sony later reported 12.0 million cumulative sell-through units for Helldivers 2 as of May 5, 2024, combining PlayStation hardware and PC. That is a separate sales measure, not a Steam player count. The PC and PS5 versions support cross-play, according to the official game announcement. This means players on the two platforms can play together, but cross-play does not turn Steam’s concurrent-player chart into a count of the combined audience.

Helldivers 2 is available on PC and PS5. The official announcement states that PS5 gameplay requires internet access and a separately sold PlayStation Plus membership. Those platform details are separate from the Steam record.
