How the reported catapult trick works
The object is the B-100 Portable Hellbomb backpack stratagem, not a mission-site Hellbomb. The reported launcher is the barrel of an emplacement as it deploys: the barrel’s movement can strike the pack and send it airborne.

Autocannon sentry account
GamesRadar+ describes players placing a Portable Hellbomb at the landing point of an autocannon sentry, whose long barrel then flings the pack. The outlet says players used the combination against Illuminate Leviathans, citing community footage; that coverage does not independently test how repeatable the launch is. GamesRadar+ report
Anti-Tank Emplacement player setup
In a Steam Community post dated February 10, 2025, player Chaoslink described a more specific setup: arm the backpack, call in an Anti-Tank Emplacement on relatively flat ground, lie down to center the pack on the blue landing beam, and drop it there. Chaoslink says the emplacement first bumps the pack and then its barrel flicks it away, “sometimes quite far.” This is a player’s account, not a guaranteed procedure or an independently verified result. What to know before trying it
- Timing and placement may be finicky. The player-described method depends on centering the backpack at the emplacement’s landing marker on flat or nearly flat ground.
- Arm it before the launch attempt. Chaoslink specifically advises arming the pack first; the item’s countdown makes this a hazard to the team.
- Move clear of the backpack. The Helldivers Wiki transcribes the B-100’s in-game description as: “A backpack-mounted Hellbomb that can be armed by the wearer or an ally, starting a countdown. Users are recommended to remove the backpack before the countdown reaches zero.” The reference also describes it as usable at a reachable location, rather than only at mission objectives. What is—and is not—confirmed
The two accounts describe different emplacement types: GamesRadar+ reports an autocannon sentry, while the Steam post gives an Anti-Tank Emplacement setup. Neither source establishes that one works better, and neither provides controlled results for success rate, travel distance, or damage. There is also no cited official patch confirmation or current-patch validation, so treat this as a reported physics interaction that may be inconsistent or may change.
GamesRadar+ also quotes Arrowhead’s statement that “Innovative Leviathan hunting techniques have had a particularly outsized effect.” That comment concerns the Leviathan campaign context; it is not confirmation of the Portable Hellbomb launch mechanics.
