The Illuminate are a technologically advanced, highly intelligent faction in Helldivers 2 who returned after being believed eradicated at the end of the First Galactic War. They abduct citizens and convert them into the Voteless, but their deeper motive remains unresolved in the official story. Later updates take the conflict from colony streets to Super Earth and into the strange Void.
Who are the Illuminate?
The Illuminate are a returning enemy faction in Helldivers 2. In its December 12, 2024 announcement, Arrowhead Game Studios said they had been missing for almost a century and described them as technologically advanced and highly intelligent. The studio’s December 17, 2024 patch notes likewise framed their return as a mysterious invasion involving citizen abductions and conversion.
Those are established story facts; the faction’s underlying motive is not. The 2024 official account said their origin was unknown, their reason for abducting citizens was unknown, and their invasion intent was unclear. Later updates add locations and events, but the official material cited here does not resolve those questions. Claims in the update announcements that invoke democratic ideals or characterize the Illuminate’s purpose come through Super Earth’s in-universe, propagandistic framing and should be read as such.
Arrowhead’s Omens of Tyranny announcement put the uncertainty plainly: “Missing for almost a century, the Illuminate will challenge our recruits more than the other factions they have faced.”

What are the Voteless?
The Voteless are citizens abducted and mind-controlled by the Illuminate, according to the official Omens of Tyranny account. They are presented as victims of the faction’s conversion, not as a separate invading civilization. The announcement describes the abductions and brainwashing, but does not explain how the mind control works or establish what happens to each victim beyond that account.
Why did the Illuminate return?
The game has not given a confirmed explanation for their deeper purpose. In December 2024, Arrowhead described the Illuminate as staging attacks, building mysterious structures, and abducting citizens while their origin and intentions remained unknown. Treat proposed motives as speculation unless a later official story update establishes them.

What is the Void, and what changed there?
Arrowhead’s August 2026 overview describes the Void as the setting reached through a Gateway opened by Super Earth after gathering Voteless tissue samples. The campaign points toward the Source Planet, formerly known as Seasse. The overview says Void missions use randomized primary objectives, reconnaissance and documentation tasks, and secondary extraction zones; these details describe that Void campaign, not necessarily every Illuminate operation elsewhere.

The setting is deliberately alien. Arrowhead’s overview says: “Space inside the Void is strange, divers. There are no stars, no marvelous skies to behold from the planet’s surface.”

Official descriptions support a few specific behavioral cues, but not a complete tactical guide or a definitive loadout. The September 2026 patch notes describe two enemies added to the Void biome:

- Crusher: It can regenerate while taking heavy damage. Arrowhead says it must be worn down quickly and consistently, so interrupted pressure may give it an opportunity to recover.
- Wretch: It is nimble, dodges and leaps at players, and threatens to dismantle weapons. Expect sudden movement and close-range pressure, rather than assuming it will approach in a straight line.
The May 2025 announcement also names the Crescent Overseer and describes the Fleshmob as hulking, but it does not provide a detailed weakness or matchup guide. These official posts document selected enemies and story moments, not an exhaustive current roster. They do not establish specific weapons or equipment as counters, so choosing a loadout requires more evidence than these descriptions provide.
