For 720p at 60 fps on YouTube Live, set video bitrate to 8 Mbps with H.264 or 6 Mbps with AV1/H.265 if your BSNL connection can sustain that rate. YouTube lists lower minimums—3 Mbps for H.264 and 2 Mbps for AV1/H.265—but a minimum encoder setting does not guarantee a stable stream. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload headroom above your total stream bitrate, so test your actual upload speed under typical gaming and household conditions before choosing a setting.
Recommended 720p60 bitrate by codec
YouTube’s live encoder guidance gives different recommendations depending on the video codec. These are video bitrates; allow additional bandwidth for audio and any other traffic using the connection.

These are YouTube Help recommendations current as accessed in 2026, not guarantees about what a particular BSNL plan or location can sustain. A lower bitrate can reduce image detail, but may be necessary if your upload speed fluctuates or is shared. Use YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance as the platform reference.
Check whether your BSNL upload can support it
The BSNL name alone does not establish your available upload speed. Your plan, location, network conditions, and other devices sharing the connection all matter. Check upload speed rather than relying on advertised download speed: YouTube notes that download speed is often higher than upload speed. - Run an upload speed test when your home connection is under conditions similar to the planned stream—for example, at the time you expect to play and with the usual household devices online.
- Account for the whole stream, not only video. Audio and other streams or network traffic also use upload capacity. YouTube notes that primary and backup streams, if used, contribute to bandwidth needs.
- Keep roughly 20% of upload capacity in reserve above the total bitrate. If capacity is variable, shared, or too close to the stream’s total bitrate, lower the video bitrate and test again.
- Test with representative gameplay movement and audio. A static scene can be less demanding than a fast-moving game, so use a realistic segment and check the stream’s health before the event.
YouTube states that total streaming bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends running a speed test to check upload bitrate. A connection disruption can interrupt a live stream; headroom and a realistic test reduce risk but cannot guarantee uninterrupted delivery.
Set the encoder for YouTube Live
For 720p60 gaming, configure the encoder to match the codec-specific video bitrate above, then check the other settings against YouTube’s live guidance:

- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframes: 2-second interval recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Protocol: RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended secure extension; RTMP/RTMPS are listed live encoder options.
- Audio: AAC or MP3.
- Color for SDR: Rec. 709.
YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 among supported live encoder options. Choose a codec your encoder and workflow support, and use the corresponding bitrate recommendation rather than applying one number to every codec. Do not use the prerecorded-upload bitrate table
YouTube’s separate upload guidance recommends 7.5 Mbps for 720p high-frame-rate prerecorded videos. That number is for encoding a video file before uploading; it is not the live-stream recommendation for 720p60. For a live gaming broadcast, use the live encoder figures above. Troubleshoot an unstable 720p60 stream
- Stream drops, buffers, or reports connection trouble: Run an upload test during typical use, reduce bitrate, and retest with the household network load you expect during play. Shared networks can restrict the bandwidth available to the encoder.
- Speed test looks adequate but the stream is unstable: Compare the test conditions with the actual stream. Other devices, changing network conditions, audio, and a backup stream can consume capacity; leave YouTube’s recommended headroom rather than setting video bitrate equal to measured upload speed.
- Image quality is poor at the recommended value: First confirm the encoder is actually set to 720p60 and the intended codec. If the connection cannot reliably carry the recommended rate plus headroom, prioritise stability by lowering bitrate and testing; YouTube’s cited guidance does not specify a gaming-specific quality threshold.
- You are comparing against a 7.5 Mbps figure: Check whether it refers to a prerecorded 720p high-frame-rate upload. That upload-encoding figure is not the live setting.
