What did PlayStation’s leak reveal?
On May 14, 2025, Insider Gaming reported that a Czech PlayStation social account had briefly posted an image naming the update Heart of Democracy and giving May 20 as its release date. The post was removed. Insider Gaming said details were scarce at the time, so the gameplay features below were not established by the leak itself. Insider Gaming’s report

Was the leak confirmed?
Yes. On May 20, 2025, PlayStation Blog published an official announcement saying the update was live. Katherine Baskin, Social Media and Community Manager at Arrowhead Game Studios, wrote: “Our major update, Heart of Democracy, is now live.” The announcement confirmed the date and supplied the fuller feature description that had been missing from the leak. What did Heart of Democracy add?
The official announcement centered the Illuminate invasion on Super Earth’s city biomes. Players take part in planetary campaigns, fighting to reclaim cities while responding to shifting invasion objectives.

- Planetary Defense Cannons: Players can activate the cannons to attack the Illuminate fleet.
- SEAF support squads: Small allied squads fight independently or can temporarily follow Helldivers.
- Civilian protection: Players must avoid killing civilians with friendly fire while fighting in the cities.
PlayStation’s announcement also named the Crescent Overseer and Fleshmob as new Illuminate troops. It noted that a primary-weapon customization system and expanded surplus options had been released the previous week; those were adjacent releases, not features first introduced with Heart of Democracy. What do players need to access the update?

Is Heart of Democracy still the latest update?
No. Heart of Democracy launched in May 2025, and the official Helldivers 2 Steam announcement feed includes later game updates. It should be understood as a major update from that date, not described as the game’s current latest update. Official Helldivers 2 Steam announcements
