Yes—the claim is broadly genuine. Arrowhead reduced the planned PC installation footprint of Helldivers 2 from approximately 154GB to approximately 23GB, saving about 131GB, or 85%. The change came mainly from removing duplicated game data that had been used to reduce mechanical hard-drive seek times—not from deleting missions, weapons, enemies, environments, or other playable content.
There is one important qualification: the roughly 23GB build was initially released as an opt-in public technical beta, while Steam’s currently listed storage requirements remain inconsistent. SSD users are the clearest beneficiaries; HDD users may face slower loading.

Arrowhead announced the result on December 2, 2025, and credited Nixxes with helping deliver the reduction sooner than expected. The figures are approximate: installed size, download size, temporary patch space, and the free space Steam requests during an update are not necessarily identical. (Arrowhead’s Steam announcement)
Why was the PC version so large?
The original PC build contained substantial asset duplication. Developers sometimes store multiple copies of frequently used files—such as textures, sounds, or environmental objects—near the level data that needs them. On a mechanical hard drive, this can reduce how far the drive’s read head must move across the platter.

A simple example is a tree texture used across many parts of a mission. Instead of keeping one copy in a distant location and repeatedly seeking back to it, a game may store several copies closer to the relevant level files. That can improve HDD loading, but it increases the installation footprint.
Arrowhead described this duplication as an optimization for mechanical hard drives. SSDs have no moving read head and are much better at random access, so the same storage layout is less valuable on modern solid-state storage. The console versions were already designed around SSD-based hardware and did not require this particular PC-oriented duplication strategy. (Arrowhead’s technical explanation)
What changed in the slim build?
The smaller build completely de-duplicates the game data. In practical terms, it keeps one copy of the relevant assets rather than many strategically placed copies. That is why the installation can lose roughly 131GB without losing the game’s core content.
“Removing the HDD optimization” is therefore shorthand. Arrowhead did not announce the removal of missions, Warbonds, weapons, enemies, maps, or visual assets. The storage reduction is primarily a change in how files are arranged and stored.

The trade-off is that a mechanical drive may need to seek between more widely separated files. Arrowhead’s first technical discussion warned that removing duplication could make HDD loading dramatically worse in some worst-case projections, including language about loading potentially becoming around ten times slower. That was not a universal measurement for every PC, and it should not be treated as a guaranteed result. (Technical blog on installation size)
What should HDD users expect?
HDD owners are not automatically locked out of the slim build. The documented concern is slower loading, not incompatibility or missing content.
Arrowhead later reported that real-world behavior was more favorable than its initial worst-case concern because a significant portion of Helldivers 2’s loading time is spent on level generation rather than simply retrieving assets from storage. That does not guarantee identical loading times, however. Players on mechanical drives should expect the possibility of longer waits and judge the result on their own system. Is the 23GB version the default for everyone?
Do not assume that every current Steam installation is exactly 23GB. Arrowhead initially released the slim version as a public technical beta for early adopters and said it would later become the default. The currently indexed Steam store page, however, still lists 135GB of available storage for the minimum specification and 40GB for the recommended specification, with an SSD recommended.
Those fields may be stale, inconsistent, or reflect installation and update headroom rather than the final occupied size. They do not, by themselves, prove that the slim build is unavailable. But without a verified live branch label or a later official announcement, the safest current wording is:

How to try the slim build on Steam
Branch names can change, so use the label currently shown in your Steam client rather than relying on an exact quoted name.

- Right-click HELLDIVERS 2.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Betas section.
- Choose the available slim or file-size-reduction beta branch.
- Allow Steam to download, replace, or verify the required files.
Switching branches may involve a substantial download even though the final slim installation is much smaller. Steam may also need additional temporary space while unpacking, verifying, or replacing files.
If the slim build causes problems
- Return to Properties → Betas.
- Select the default branch, usually shown as None.
- Let Steam restore the standard files.
- Use Steam’s file-verification option if the installation behaves unexpectedly.
- Report reproducible issues through Arrowhead’s player-support channel, as requested in the announcement.
The available material does not establish whether every beta and default-branch configuration can always match together, so players should not assume cross-branch matchmaking behavior without checking the current announcement or client.
Who should use the slim build?

What the 23GB figure does—and does not—mean
- It is approximate: the final installed footprint can vary with updates and branch state.
- It is not necessarily the download size: Steam may download compressed or replacement data and then unpack it.
- It is not necessarily the temporary free-space requirement: updates can require staging room beyond the final folder size.
- It is not a permanent ceiling: future content and patches can increase the footprint.
- It does not promise better FPS or graphics: the change targets storage layout, not rendering performance.
- It does not guarantee faster loading: SSD users may see little change beyond disk usage, while HDD users may load more slowly.
Should you buy an SSD?
You do not need a new drive to use the slim build. If the game already runs from an SSD, buying an expensive high-end PCIe drive solely for Helldivers 2 is unlikely to be worthwhile. If the game is on a mechanical HDD and loading is a recurring problem, moving it to an SSD is the more direct solution.
Before buying, check whether your system supports an internal M.2 NVMe drive, a 2.5-inch SATA SSD, or an external SSD over a sufficiently fast USB connection. An external SSD can be convenient for a laptop or a system with no internal expansion, but its results depend on the USB port and enclosure. Adding another HDD increases capacity but does not address mechanical seek latency. A storage upgrade also does not guarantee faster matchmaking, higher frame rates, or shorter level-generation times.

Bottom line: the 154GB-to-23GB claim is substantially real and comes from removing duplicated data designed to help mechanical HDDs. SSD users with limited space have the most to gain. HDD users can consider the slim build, but should expect possible loading penalties and avoid treating the 23GB figure—or the beta’s default status—as universal until Steam’s live branch and requirements clearly reflect it.
