On a lower preset, you have more room to learn how staggering, executions, environmental attacks, and the box powers fit together. That makes it the sensible starting point if you primarily want the story, atmosphere, and exploration. A higher preset is better suited to players who enjoy survival-horror resource decisions and are willing to replay encounters while learning enemy-specific responses. Because tuning can vary by preset and platform version, do not assume that a guide written for one setting maps perfectly to another.
How long does the campaign take?
Assistant Game Director Vid Rajin gives an official estimate of 8–12 hours, with the range changing according to difficulty level and player skill. Exploration habits, time spent searching for routes, and failed combat attempts all affect where you land in that range. Firearms are generally the most reliable way to deal damage when an enemy is exposed or when closing distance would be unsafe. Ammunition is still a resource, so shooting every target on sight can leave you poorly equipped for a later encounter.
Melee weapons are useful but fragile. Launch reviews commonly describe their feel as rough or stiff, with limited blocking and durability concerns. A broken weapon can turn an apparently simple fight into a scramble, and the restricted defensive options mean that standing toe-to-toe is rarely the safest plan. Use melee to finish a staggered opponent, handle an isolated threat, or conserve ammunition when the space gives you room to move; do not treat it as a fully dependable substitute for a firearm.

The environment supplies a third category of attack. Telekinetic throws, fire drawn from nearby sources, and other hazards can hurt enemies without consuming conventional ammunition. They become especially valuable when several targets line up or when a room contains an obvious object that can be weaponized.

The box does not make Aidan permanently overpowered. Its more potent options are gated by Suffering, an economy you build through combat actions such as staggering enemies and performing executions. You then spend that resource to activate stronger abilities. This creates a loop: create an opening, execute when it is safe, gain the resource, and decide whether the next fight justifies spending it.
A reliable combat loop
- Read the room before attacking. Identify cover, explosive or throwable objects, fire sources, escape space, and the safest route around an enemy. A narrow corridor favors a different plan from an open chamber with environmental hazards.
- Start with the least expensive effective option. If a telekinetically thrown object or environmental fire can create an opening, use it before spending scarce ammunition.
- Stagger rather than trade blows. A stagger gives you control of the encounter and contributes to the Suffering economy. Trying to block or absorb repeated melee hits is unreliable when weapons are fragile and blocking is limited.
- Execute when the opening is safe. An execution is a finisher and a way to rebuild the resource that powers the Configuration. Do not rush into an execution if another enemy can interrupt you.
- Spend Suffering deliberately. Hell Chains and other stronger powers are most valuable when they prevent damage, solve a dangerous group encounter, or save more ammunition than they cost in future fights.
- Reposition after every exchange. Move away from a collapsing melee weapon, avoid being surrounded, and reset the fight around cover or a useful environmental object.
Why melee receives the most criticism
The complaints are specific rather than universal: attacks can feel stiff, blocking is limited, and durability makes a weapon an uncertain long-term investment. Those traits create friction when the game repeats close-quarters encounters. The practical response is to stop treating melee as the default answer. Use it as one part of a rotation built around staggers, executions, firearms, and the environment. Players who expect a polished character-action system are more likely to be frustrated; players who approach melee as a risky survival-horror tool generally have an easier time.
How Suffering changes your decisions
Suffering is the bridge between ordinary combat and the supernatural identity of Hellraiser: Revival. It is earned through deliberate actions rather than passively regenerating, so the game rewards control. A stagger is not only a moment to deal damage; it is progress toward a stronger Configuration attack. An execution is not merely a cinematic finisher; it also helps refill the economy that lets you use the box again.

This makes resource planning more nuanced than simply counting bullets. Spending Suffering immediately can end a dangerous encounter and preserve health, but holding it can give you a better answer in the next room. The right choice depends on whether the current threat is likely to snowball, whether environmental options are available, and how safely you can create another stagger or execution.

The puzzles are generally atmospheric and distinctive rather than exceptionally difficult. Reviews describe a Resident Evil-style structure built around exploration, item use, locked routes, and backtracking. Once you understand what the game considers an interactable mechanism and how the Configuration relates to it, most obstacles become readable. - Trace the last unresolved clue. If you found a mechanism but could not activate it, mark its location mentally and search the most recently opened area for the missing component.
- Use the box as a progression tool, not only a weapon. Re-examine environmental structures after gaining a new power. A previously decorative object may now be the intended interaction point.
- Backtrack methodically. Return through known rooms in a consistent order, checking doors and mechanisms you could not complete. This is faster than wandering through the entire Labyrinth again.
- Separate puzzle failure from combat danger. If enemies respawn or patrol a route, create space before inspecting an object. The game’s atmosphere can make a simple interaction feel like a puzzle when the real problem is that you are being pressured while searching.
Atmosphere versus friction
Hellraiser: Revival uses presentation to make ordinary tasks feel threatening. A straightforward key search can become tense when the Labyrinth’s oppressive spaces, sound, and enemy pressure make you reluctant to revisit a room. That atmosphere is part of why the puzzles feel more demanding than their underlying logic.
The same design can produce friction. Repeated encounters on a backtrack, a weapon breaking during a close fight, or an awkward melee exchange can interrupt the exploratory rhythm. Quality-of-life features and platforms
The official PlayStation listing identifies PlayStation 5, and the game also has a PC storefront listing on Steam. The PlayStation feature set includes adjustable preset difficulty, tutorial reminders, pausing during offline play, and manual saving. Those options matter in a survival-horror game because they let you revisit system explanations, stop safely when playing offline, and control your progress instead of relying solely on automatic checkpoints.
Manual saving is especially useful before experimenting with a new Configuration power or entering a room where resources are already low. Tutorial reminders can also clarify a mechanic you understood in isolation but have not yet integrated into the combat loop. “My melee weapon keeps breaking.”
That is a consequence of the designed durability system, not evidence that the weapon is meant to carry every fight. Use firearms, telekinetic objects, and environmental fire to reduce the number of swings required, and reserve melee for staggered or isolated targets.

Reassess the previous encounters. Ammunition conservation is part of the intended challenge. Look for environmental attacks, create staggers, and use executions to rebuild Suffering so the Configuration can cover situations that would otherwise require bullets.

“The box power is available, but I cannot use the stronger attack.”
Check your Suffering supply. The advanced abilities are resource-gated; performing staggers and executions is how you build the resource needed for them. A full set of powers does not mean every attack is permanently free.
“I cannot find the next route.”
Search for a key, missing object, or mechanism that you previously encountered but could not complete. Then revisit recently opened areas with the Configuration in mind. The progression model expects backtracking, so a locked route is often a sign to follow an unresolved lead rather than a dead end.
“The puzzles feel easy, but the section still feels hard.”
The difficulty may be coming from atmosphere, enemy pressure, or the risk of repeated combat rather than puzzle logic. Secure the room before searching, note useful environmental objects, and separate the act of finding the solution from the act of surviving the route to it.
