The story premise in plain language
Aidan’s goal is straightforward: find Sunny and bring her back. The method is anything but. The Genesis Configuration, a puzzle box with a direct connection to the otherworldly Labyrinth, becomes the engine of the rescue attempt. Opening or manipulating it gives Aidan access to places, puzzles and powers, but it also exposes him to the beings who inhabit that realm.

Pinhead offers the most dangerous form of help. In the official descriptions, Aidan bargains with him while fighting a cult that venerates the Cenobites. That bargain turns a rescue mission into a test of what Aidan will endure for Sunny. The central conflict is therefore personal rather than merely geographical: Aidan is not simply escaping a monster-filled location; he is negotiating with powers that treat suffering, desire and experience as parts of a transaction.

- Aidan: the playable protagonist and the person who enters the Labyrinth in search of Sunny.
- Sunny: Aidan’s girlfriend, whose disappearance or entrapment gives the story its emotional objective.
- Pinhead: the best-known Cenobite figure, identified in the game’s material as the Hell Priest and the party with whom Aidan bargains.
You do not need to know the film series in advance to understand this setup. The box opens the path, the Labyrinth is the destination, Sunny is the person Aidan wants to save, and Pinhead represents the price of trying.

The Genesis Configuration: the box that drives the game
In Hellraiser lore, a puzzle box is a device that can open access to a realm beyond ordinary reality. Revival calls its central box the Genesis Configuration. It is not just a prop placed in the background for recognisable imagery. The official game descriptions put it at the centre of both the story and the practical play experience.
Its story function
The Genesis Configuration is the object that connects Aidan’s world to the Labyrinth and makes Sunny’s rescue possible. Its presence explains why the characters can cross into the Cenobites’ domain and why Aidan becomes entangled in a conflict larger than a conventional missing-person search.
Its gameplay function
The box is also used to solve puzzles and access powers. Expect its significance to appear through interaction, exploration and problem-solving rather than through exposition alone. When the game presents a configuration or mechanism involving the box, treat it as a clue about progression as well as a piece of lore.

What the Labyrinth means
The Labyrinth is the otherworldly realm where Sunny is trapped. It is often described as a hellscape, but that shorthand can make it sound like a conventional fiery underworld. In Hellraiser, the Labyrinth is better understood as a hostile dimension governed by Cenobite logic: forbidden experience is pursued, transformed and punished according to rules that humans do not control.

For Aidan, the Labyrinth is both a physical environment and the consequence of opening the box. Its spaces provide the setting for exploration and survival-horror encounters, while its inhabitants force him to confront the terms of his bargain. The realm’s importance is therefore practical—this is where the rescue takes place—and thematic, because it turns desire into a source of risk.
Cenobites and the other threats
Cenobites are the supernatural beings associated with the Labyrinth. They are not simply interchangeable demons. Their identity is tied to extreme experiences, ritual and the belief that the boundaries between pleasure and pain can be crossed. Pinhead is the most recognisable member of this group, but he is not the only danger Aidan faces.
Threats named in the game’s descriptions
- Cenobites: supernatural inhabitants of the Labyrinth, including Pinhead.
- Cultists: human or human-aligned followers devoted to the Cenobites.
- Deviants: hostile figures associated with the game’s corrupted world.
- Wretches: dangerous creatures or afflicted enemies encountered during Aidan’s journey.
- Infernal priests: religious or ritual adversaries connected to the Cenobite presence.
The cult matters because it gives the game a human dimension. Aidan is not confronting only an alien realm; he is also opposed by people who have chosen to serve or worship its powers. That creates a different kind of threat from a Cenobite encounter: cultists can represent deliberate belief and organisation, whereas the Labyrinth’s supernatural beings embody the rules of the realm itself.
Pinhead and the Hell Priest
Pinhead, called the Hell Priest in the game’s official material, is the character most newcomers will recognise from Hellraiser. In Revival, he is not merely a pursuer waiting at the end of a level. He is the figure with whom Aidan makes the bargain that drives the rescue attempt.
That relationship is important because Pinhead’s role is transactional. Aidan wants access to Sunny; Pinhead represents the conditions attached to that access. The resulting tension is different from a simple hero-versus-villain story. Aidan may need the Hell Priest’s influence while knowing that accepting it can place Sunny, himself or both of them in greater danger.

The Hell Priest says this line in the original Hellraiser film, and PlayStation’s official feature quotes it as a thematic reference. It captures the series’ central idea: curiosity and desire can lead somewhere extraordinary, but the experience may demand a price the explorer cannot undo.
What is new about Revival?
Hellraiser: Revival is presented as a new story rather than a direct retelling of one of the films. It keeps the franchise’s signature ingredients—the puzzle box, the Cenobites, the Labyrinth and Pinhead—while giving them a new human focus through Aidan and Sunny.
The project also has unusually direct creative continuity. Clive Barker advised on the game, and Doug Bradley returned to perform Pinhead. Barker’s involvement connects the game to the creator’s original vision, while Bradley’s return gives the Hell Priest a familiar voice and performance presence. These credits do not mean the game repeats an earlier plot; they signal that its new story is being made with direct participation from two defining figures in the franchise.
How the lore fits together

- The crossing: Aidan enters the otherworldly realm where Sunny is trapped.
- The inhabitants: Cenobites and other hostile beings enforce the realm’s danger, while cultists support its influence.

- The cost: Every step toward the rescue risks binding Aidan more tightly to the rules of the Labyrinth.
This framework is enough to follow the plot without memorising a film-by-film chronology. Details from earlier Hellraiser stories may add context, but the game’s own premise supplies the necessary starting point.
What to know before you play
You can start without watching the films
The game introduces its own protagonist, relationship and objective. Newcomers should focus first on the Aidan–Sunny relationship and the role of the Genesis Configuration. The broader vocabulary becomes easier once those anchors are clear.
Expect survival horror, not a power fantasy
The first-person format places you close to the Labyrinth’s spaces and threats. The box’s powers are part of progression, but they do not remove the danger represented by Cenobites, cultists and other enemies. The premise is built around exposure, uncertainty and a costly bargain rather than uncomplicated empowerment.
Pay attention to objects and rituals
Because the Genesis Configuration is both a narrative device and a practical tool, puzzle interactions are likely to carry more meaning than an ordinary locked-door challenge. Examine configurations, environmental clues and ritual details instead of treating them as disposable scenery.
Release and platform information
Official platform listings give Hellraiser: Revival an October 8, 2026 release date and identify PlayStation 5 and Windows through Steam among the listed platforms. The date and storefront availability can differ by region, edition or local listing, so check the store page serving your country before buying.

- Use “Cenobite” for the supernatural beings and “Pinhead” or “Hell Priest” for the central figure who bargains with Aidan.
- Only then explore older films or expanded franchise material if you want additional context.
This approach prevents a common confusion: treating every Cenobite as Pinhead, or assuming that the Labyrinth is simply a normal location with monsters in it. The distinctions matter to the game’s story and to the choices Aidan faces.

Why the premise matters
The rescue objective gives Revival a clear emotional centre, while the box and Labyrinth provide its supernatural structure. Pinhead’s bargain connects those two layers: Aidan’s love for Sunny motivates him, but the Cenobite world determines what that love will cost.
For newcomers, that is the essential Hellraiser idea carried into the game. The horror does not come only from being chased. It comes from opening a door you wanted opened, discovering that the experience beyond it is real, and learning that the person offering help may be enforcing the rules of your punishment.
