Hellraiser: Revival stands apart most clearly through its announced use of the Genesis Configuration: the iconic puzzle box is both central to the story and a source of abilities that work alongside conventional weapons. It is a single-player, first-person action survival-horror game rooted in Hellraiser’s Cenobites and themes of pain, pleasure, desire, and temptation—not a direct continuation of the films’ plots. The game is scheduled to release October 8, 2026, tomorrow as of October 7.
What makes Hellraiser: Revival different?
The strongest announced distinction is how the game ties its signature object to both narrative and combat. Aidan uses the Genesis Configuration to try to help his girlfriend Sunny escape the Labyrinth; Saber says the box’s abilities combine with an earthly arsenal. That gives Hellraiser: Revival a franchise-specific hook beyond its general survival-horror and action labels.

This is a description of the design Saber has announced, not a claim that other horror games lack puzzle mechanics, weapons, or supernatural threats. The available information does not establish how often the box is used, how its abilities work in detail, or how combat and survival feel in play.
How does it compare on the main survival-horror axes?
| Axis | What’s confirmed for Hellraiser: Revival | What that means for comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Perspective and player mode | First-person and single-player, according to Saber’s support FAQ. | Compare it with a specific game’s official description or a released build; survival-horror games do not all share one perspective or player mode. |
| Action and survival | Saber describes an action survival-horror game. Official materials combine conventional weapons with Genesis Configuration abilities; the demo listing also mentions puzzles, crafting, and combat. | This is an announced action-oriented mix. Marketing descriptions do not establish weapon scarcity, stealth quality, difficulty, or the balance between combat and resource management. |
| Signature mechanic | The Genesis Configuration is a plot catalyst and a gameplay element whose abilities complement weapons. | This is the clearest stated differentiator. Its variety and depth need to be judged from the released game. |
| Horror identity | The threat includes Pinhead, the Cenobites, a cult, and the Labyrinth; the story draws on Hellraiser’s interest in pain, pleasure, desire, and temptation. | Its distinctiveness is rooted in a particular horror universe and its moral lens, rather than a proven advantage over other games. |
| Story continuity | The story is new to the Hellraiser universe and is not directly connected to the films’ plots, according to executive producer Nenad Tomic. | It is neither a direct film adaptation nor an established continuation of either of the first two films. |
| Content profile | The developer’s Steam notice lists strong violence, gore, torture, consensual mutilation, substance use, non-explicit consensual sex, and narrative themes including suicide, domestic abuse, BDSM practices, and addiction. | This is a useful audience-fit distinction. It is the developer’s content notice, not a separate ratings-board judgment. |
How do the Genesis Configuration and combat fit together?
Saber’s announcement presents the Genesis Configuration as more than a recognizable prop: Aidan uses its powers alongside conventional weapons as he confronts the game’s threats. That combination is the most concrete answer to “what’s different?” because it joins a recognizable Hellraiser artifact to the action side of the game.

The available materials do not show enough to compare the mechanic’s depth with named games or to say whether combat, puzzles, crafting, or other survival systems dominate. The free Steam demo’s description says it introduces puzzle solving, crafting, and combat, but its listing identifies it as a prerelease build that may contain bugs, performance issues, or work-in-progress content.
Is the story connected to the Hellraiser movies?
It is set in the Hellraiser universe, but it tells a new story. In a July 22, 2025 Xbox Wire interview, executive producer Nenad Tomic said the game draws on the atmosphere, themes, and mythology of the first two films, while its plot “is not directly connected to the movies.”

- Classic Craft-Based Survival Horror - Scavenge every corner of Rutherford Ranch to stay alive. From haunted forests, a derelict town, to infested bunkers. Explore a world teeming with danger as you gather vital resources, craft essential gear, upgrade your campsite, and rebuild outposts to have somewhere to hide.
- Day Prepares You. Night Hunts You - A dynamic day-night cycle that changes the world. Use daylight wisely to explore, scavenge supplies, craft what you need, and prepare for what’s coming. When night falls, the real nightmares come out to play. More enemies appear, stronger and more aggressive than before. The landscape becomes harder to navigate with just your flashlight. Sometimes your best hope is to find shelter and hunker down till morning.
- Deadly Silence Goes A Long Way - Stealth and combat go hand-in-hand here as many of the twisted creatures in Rutherford Ranch hunt and stalk you by sound alone. Brute force will often just land you in an early grave. Use sound to your advantage, luring creatures away from your path or cleverly leading them straight into deadly traps you laid.
- 80’s Vibes Meets Comic Book Flair - Inspired by the award-nominated comic book series created by Kyle Starks and Artyom Topilin, I Hate This Place comes to life with bold colors, a punchy retro comic book style, and a heavy dose of '80s flair. A unique blend of horror, dark humor, and just the right touch of camp and gore where unsettling dread meets stylized charm.
- Languages – English in-game voice. English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Simplified Chinese, and Spanish (Spain) in-game text.
The premise follows Aidan as he tries to help Sunny escape the otherworldly Labyrinth with the Genesis Configuration. Pinhead appears, voiced by Doug Bradley, who returns to the role. The creative development also involved Clive Barker, according to Tomic.
Game director Emil Esov described the Cenobites as “not so easily viewed as being morally bad” in a July 16, 2026 PlayStation Blog developer diary. That points to a Hellraiser-specific approach to temptation and morality; it does not establish how the game resolves those ideas in its full story.

When does Hellraiser: Revival release, and what can you play it on?
As of October 7, 2026, Saber lists October 8, 2026 as the release date. Its current FAQ names PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and Steam. The earlier 2025 announcement named PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC; the later FAQ is the current source for the platform list. Check the relevant store page for availability in your region.
Saber estimates a playthrough at around 8–12 hours. This is the developer’s estimate, not independently measured completion data. The FAQ also says an internet connection is not required and that there are no post-launch-content plans “at this time”; plans can change.

- A dark, enthralling 4-5 hour narrative to keep you hooked and guessing until the end. Gorgeous visuals as you traverse numerous and diverse environments, presented with a cinematic, film-like aesthetic. Ranged and melee combat with upgradeable weapons to help you survive your nightmarish journey.
- A stellar voice cast, starring Valerie Rose Lohman (What Remains of Edith Finch, Wolfenstein: Youngblood), Jonah Scott (Dying Light 2: Stay Human, Date Everything), and Aleks Le (Persona 3: Reload, Marvel Rivals, Ghost of Yotei).
- A beautifully dynamic and haunting soundtrack composed and performed by Jacob Noska, and Jonah Henthorne: members of the band Auric Echoes.
- The puzzles you encounter are more than your standard key hunt. Project Songbird rewards those with an eye for detail, making each puzzle a challenge of creativity and wits.
- The combat of Project Songbird offers a variety of approaches inspired by the classics of the survival horror genre. Melee and gunplay is slow and weighty, and ammo is incredibly scarce. However, combat isn't your only option, as you have a multitude of tools at your disposal to aid in sneaking past any creatures that wish to do you harm.
Is there a demo?
A free Steam demo released September 17, 2026. Its listing says it covers the prologue and part of Episode 1, introducing puzzle solving, crafting, and combat. Demo progress does not carry over to the full game. The listing also cautions that the demo is a prerelease build that may include bugs, performance issues, or work-in-progress content.
What should you compare before choosing it?
For a useful comparison with another survival-horror game, focus on the features that can be checked rather than assuming a genre-wide contrast:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Point of view and player mode: check whether the other game is first-person, third-person, single-player, or multiplayer.
- Action mix: compare official descriptions and released gameplay for combat, puzzles, crafting, stealth, and resource management. The announcements for Revival do not establish how these systems are balanced.
- Source of its identity: consider whether you want horror built around Hellraiser’s Cenobites and lore, or a different setting and kind of threat.
- Continuity: treat Revival as a new story in the film universe, not a plot continuation of the first two movies.
- Content suitability: read the developer’s notice if torture, gore, or the listed narrative themes are relevant to your decision.
These points identify what is known about Revival; without a controlled or hands-on comparison, they do not support a verdict that it is better or worse than a particular competitor.
What content does the developer disclose?
Steam’s developer-provided notice describes mature language, strong violence, gore, torture, consensual mutilation, drug and alcohol abuse, tobacco use, and non-explicit consensual sex. It also lists narrative themes including suicide, domestic abuse, BDSM practices, and addiction. This is the developer’s disclosure for the game, not an independent age-rating assessment.
