To manage storage on Xbox Series X|S, review your installed games and remove titles you no longer play. For games you want to keep, choose between a compatible external USB drive—which is useful for archiving but may require moving optimized games back before playing—or an Xbox Storage Expansion Card for supported games you want ready to launch from added storage.

How do I manage storage on Xbox?

Open the console’s storage management area and review installed games alongside available space. Xbox Support calls this feature Manage storage. Menu wording and navigation can change, so use the labels shown on your console rather than relying on a fixed button-by-button path.

Start with games you no longer want installed. Removing one frees local space without buying additional storage, but you may need to download or install it again before playing later.

Which Xbox storage option fits your library?

Option Best for Playing games Trade-off
Remove an installed game Making space without buying hardware Install it again when you want to play You may need to download or install it again
External USB HDD or SSD Keeping less-played games as an archive Seagate says optimized Series X|S games stored on USB must be moved back to the internal drive or Seagate Storage Expansion Card to play Accept a transfer step and check that the device is compatible
Seagate Storage Expansion Card for Xbox Series X|S Adding storage for supported games you want ready to play Xbox says the card maintains the console’s internal SSD peak speed and performance It requires a hardware purchase; check current capacity, price, and availability

When is an external USB drive useful?

A compatible external USB HDD or SSD can hold games you want to keep without using internal storage, and it can serve as a transfer source when you want to play one again. Seagate’s guide states: “Games optimized for Series X|S stored on an external USB drive will need to be moved back to the internal drive or Seagate Storage Expansion Card for game play.” See Seagate’s guide to using an external USB drive with an Xbox Series X or S.

Sandisk 1TB Optimus GX C50 Storage Expansion Card for Xbox
  • EFFORTLESS XBOX INTEGRATION. Officially licensed for Xbox Series X|S consoles.
  • ROOM FOR MORE GAMES. Up to 2TB(1) of storage gives you space to grow your library by up to 50(4) more games.
  • NVME SPEED YOU CAN FEEL. Low-latency performance matches Xbox Velocity Architecture, so games play directly from the card.
  • QUICK RESUME READY. Instantly switch between multiple suspended games without losing progress or waiting.
  • XBOX GAME PASS ULTIMATE. Enjoy a 1-month trial with access to hundreds of games across console, PC, and cloud(2).

Do not assume an ordinary USB drive can launch every Series X|S-optimized title. Check current Xbox and drive compatibility guidance for the device you plan to use; the console may require a drive to be formatted for use.

When should you consider a Storage Expansion Card?

If you want added storage where supported Series X|S games can remain ready to launch, consider the Seagate Storage Expansion Card for Xbox Series X|S. Xbox describes it as adding external memory while maintaining the same peak speed and performance as the console’s internal SSD. Check the current market for available capacities, prices, and stock before choosing a model.

How should you choose?

  1. Remove what you do not want installed. This is the no-purchase option; reinstall a removed game when you want it again.
  2. Archive games you play less often on USB. Choose this when keeping a larger library matters more than launching every game directly from that drive. Verify compatibility and allow for transfers before playing optimized titles.
  3. Use a Storage Expansion Card for supported games you want ready to play. Compare currently available capacities and prices in your market, and choose based on how much extra ready-to-play space you need.

Quick Resume does not remove the USB playability restriction: Xbox Wire says it works whether a game is being played from internal storage, the Seagate card, or USB storage, with game-state data persisted on the internal SSD. That feature does not mean every optimized game stored on USB can launch from there. See Xbox Wire’s explanation of Quick Resume and Xbox Velocity Architecture.
