1. Begin with Man of Steel (2013)
Man of Steel is the clearest entry point because Cavill’s Clark Kent/Superman performance is the anchor for his connected DC appearances. It gives you the character’s origin, his public emergence and the physical, earnest style Cavill brings to the role. Watching it first also makes the later films easier to place: they continue consequences and relationships introduced here rather than functioning as unrelated cameos.
#1 Best Overall
- The Skywalker saga’s center trilogy introduces Luke Skywalker, who is drawn into the rebellion against the evil Galactic Empire when he is recruited by Obi-Wan Kenobi. Strong in the Force, Luke is confronted with a shocking truth — while Sith Lord Darth Vader faces a supreme decision.
2. Continue the Superman arc in release order
- Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016). This is Cavill’s next major Superman appearance and expands the story from a solo origin into a conflict involving Batman and the wider DC world.
- Justice League (2017). The theatrical ensemble continuation places Superman inside a team narrative. It is best watched after Batman v Superman because its emotional stakes depend on that film.
- Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021). This later director’s-cut version is listed separately in Cavill’s filmography. Treat it as an alternate, expanded presentation of the ensemble story rather than a new chapter that must be inserted between other releases.
- Black Adam (2022). Cavill has a brief Superman appearance. It is useful if your goal is to see every listed screen appearance, but it is not a substitute for the three films that carry his main arc.
If you only want one Cavill superhero film, stop at Man of Steel. If you want the complete Superman-focused path, watch the four principal titles above and add Black Adam for its short appearance.
3. See his lighter spy persona in The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015)
The Man from U.N.C.L.E. is the ideal second stop for viewers who want to know what Cavill can do outside a mythic hero role. It is a stylish spy comedy, and Cavill’s performance relies more on charm, timing and controlled confidence than on Superman’s solemnity. The contrast is immediate: you see the same leading-man presence used for banter, capers and period espionage rather than a superhero origin.
4. Follow with Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018)
In Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Cavill plays August Walker in a large-scale action setting. Place it after The Man from U.N.C.L.E. to make the progression clear: first the playful spy-comedy register, then a harder-edged studio action role. The film is also a useful test of whether you prefer Cavill in ensemble action, where his character is one part of a larger operation, or in a franchise built around his own central hero.

The Witcher is Cavill’s most substantial television showcase in this route. He plays Geralt of Rivia across 24 listed episodes, giving you far more screen time than a film can provide. The series demonstrates how he sustains a character through recurring alliances, conflicts and changes in tone. It is the right choice when your question is not simply whether Cavill can carry a film, but how he handles a long-form literary-fantasy adaptation.
Rank #2
Because the series ran from 2019 through 2023, it also shows a later phase of his career than The Tudors. Watch a few episodes first if you are unsure about the fantasy setting; the value for a Cavill-focused viewer is the consistency of Geralt’s physical and restrained performance over the episode count.
6. Go back to The Tudors (2007–2010) for his early television work
The Tudors is Cavill’s major early television showcase. He plays Charles Brandon, 1st Duke of Suffolk, in the historical series. Watching it after The Witcher reverses the chronology deliberately: you see the performer before his best-known film roles and can track how his screen presence developed in an ensemble period drama.
This is not a Superman prequel or a fantasy adventure. Its value is historical and character-based, and it gives a different answer to the question of Cavill’s range: he is working within an established period world, sharing the series with a broad cast rather than building a story around special effects.
7. Add the Enola Holmes films for a supporting detective role
Cavill plays Sherlock Holmes in Enola Holmes (2020) and Enola Holmes 2 (2022). These films are useful after the larger action titles because they show him in a supporting position, interpreting a familiar literary figure while the story centers on Enola. The two-film pairing lets you compare how he carries the Sherlock role across separate mysteries without mistaking it for a full Sherlock-led series.
Rank #3
8. Sample his newer spy and wartime projects
- Argylle (2024): a contemporary spy-comedy lead, useful if you want a recent Cavill performance that returns to the playful espionage mode introduced by The Man from U.N.C.L.E.
- The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (2024): a wartime action role listed in his filmography. Choose it when you want another example of his action persona rather than another superhero chapter.
These 2024 titles work best as follow-ups, not starting points. The earlier films and series establish the contrasts—heroic, comic, historical, fantasy and ensemble action—that make the newer roles more informative.
Mark Hamill: the essential route beyond and through Star Wars
1. Watch the original trilogy in order
- Star Wars (1977). This is the film that made Hamill a household name as Luke Skywalker. D23 describes Luke as the defining hero for an entire generation of filmgoers, and that cultural position explains why this remains the correct first stop.
- The Empire Strikes Back (1980). The middle chapter deepens Luke’s journey and shows Hamill working within a darker, more demanding section of the trilogy.
- Return of the Jedi (1983). Finish the original trilogy here before moving to other Hamill work. His performance has a different context once you have seen Luke’s complete original-film arc.
Do not begin with a later spin-off or an isolated voice role if your aim is to understand Hamill’s place in film history. The three original films are the foundation; everything else is easier to appreciate as a departure from, or extension of, Luke Skywalker.
2. Sample his non-Star Wars live-action films
After the trilogy, try Corvette Summer (1978) and The Big Red One (1980). Both are identified in filmography summaries as important non-Star Wars live-action work. They are valuable precisely because they remove the lightsaber, the space-opera setting and the Luke identity from the equation.
These films should be treated as samples rather than a second franchise marathon. Watch them when you want to see how Hamill’s screen presence changes in grounded, non-galactic material. Their position immediately after the trilogy also makes the career transition easy to understand: the roles are close enough to his breakthrough to show the contrast clearly.

3. Make animation the second essential Hamill lane
Hamill’s later reputation cannot be explained by live-action films alone. Biography records identify Batman: The Animated Series (1992–1994), Superman (1997) and The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest (1996–1997) among his notable animation work. The Joker became his best-known voice role in DC media, creating a career identity as distinct from Luke Skywalker as Superman is from Geralt for Cavill.
Start with episodes of Batman: The Animated Series to hear the performance that made his Joker voice so recognizable. Then sample the other two series to understand that his animation work was broader than a single villain. The medium changes what you listen for: vocal rhythm, pitch, menace, comic timing and character separation matter more than physical resemblance.
4. Put the scale of his voice career in perspective
Biography.com reported in 2019 that Hamill had more than 250 roles. That figure covers a wide body of work rather than one continuous television storyline, so a complete viewing order is neither practical nor necessary. Use the named animation series as a representative path, then explore additional credits according to whether you prefer superhero animation, adventure cartoons or villain performances.

What to watch if you have only one evening
For Henry Cavill
Choose Man of Steel for the essential Superman introduction. If you have time for a second film, make it The Man from U.N.C.L.E. to see the largest immediate contrast in tone. Viewers who prefer action over comedy can substitute Mission: Impossible – Fallout. Television viewers should choose several episodes of The Witcher instead of trying to sample every film in one sitting.
Best Value
- The Legendary Trilogy – Includes Episodes IV–VI: A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi.
- High-Definition Presentation – Fully remastered in stunning Blu-ray quality with enhanced visuals and sound.

For Mark Hamill

If you already know the trilogy, move directly to an episode of Batman: The Animated Series; that is the fastest way to encounter the voice performance that defines Hamill’s second major phase.

Choosing the right route for your interests
- You want a connected superhero story: follow Cavill’s Superman sequence from Man of Steel through Batman v Superman, Justice League and Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
- You want Cavill without superheroes: pair The Man from U.N.C.L.E. with Mission: Impossible – Fallout, then add one of the 2024 spy or wartime films.
- You want a long television commitment: choose The Witcher for Cavill or explore Hamill through selected animated episodes rather than a single live-action series.
- You want Hamill’s cultural starting point: watch the original Star Wars trilogy before anything else.
- You want Hamill’s most distinctive later work: go to Batman: The Animated Series and then sample Superman and The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest.
Availability and viewing-order caveats
The titles above are identified by release year and role in the cited biography and filmography records, but availability is not fixed. Streaming licenses differ by country and can change without notice; physical releases also vary by region and edition. Check the current listing in your territory rather than assuming that a film or series is included with a particular subscription.
Release order is the safest default for both actors because it preserves the way their careers and characters were introduced. The only deliberate exception is the placement of Zack Snyder’s Justice League: watch it after the theatrical Justice League if you want to compare the two versions, or treat it as the preferred cut after completing Batman v Superman if you do not plan to watch both.
