Herdling is a linear, single-player adventure about guiding and protecting a herd of fantastical creatures across a fallen world. Its simple herding and navigation are less about mastering a simulation than about learning to care for the Calicorns as the scenery changes around them. If you want a mechanically demanding management game, look elsewhere; if you want an atmospheric journey with light puzzles and an unusually tender premise, Herdling makes a strong case for the trip.

What kind of game is Herdling?

Developed by Okomotive and published with Panic, Herdling follows a wordless alpine crossing through a fallen world. You guide and protect Calicorns—fantastical herd creatures—through forests, snowy plateaus, valleys and mountain paths. The official description centers the journey on trust, survival and companionship rather than dialogue-heavy storytelling. Herdling’s official site

The emotional hook comes from the responsibility implicit in the premise: this is not simply a hike through striking scenery, because the herd is with you and needs to make it through the landscape. The game’s quiet approach leaves room for the relationship to register through the journey itself.

How does the herding play work?

The core is steering the herd, navigating hazards and responding to environmental challenges. Light puzzles and stampede sequences add variety, but the game is not a deep livestock-management simulation with intricate systems to optimize. Okomotive co-founder and creative lead Don Schmocker described the design aim to Xbox Wire as: “To create a flowing and fun gameplay we wanted to avoid the feeling of an escort mission or an obstacle course.” Xbox Wire, February 27, 2025

That intent helps explain the balance: the herd is central, but the experience is meant to flow rather than turn every stretch into a tactical test. Expect simple, readable interactions and occasional puzzles, not a demanding herding challenge.

Is Herdling linear, and how long does it take?

Yes. PC Gamer characterized the route as very linear, comparing its structure to a sightseeing tour that prioritizes immersion in changing landscapes. That is a reviewer’s description, but it is a useful expectation-setter: Herdling is a guided journey, not an open-world expedition. PC Gamer’s review

TechRadar estimated a four-to-six-hour playthrough in its 2025 review. Treat that as an outlet estimate, not a guaranteed completion time; pace and how much discoverable content you pursue can affect the run. TechRadar also noted collectibles as a reason to spend more time exploring. TechRadar’s review
