If hermes.dll is missing, repair or reinstall the application that requested it rather than downloading a replacement file. The name can refer to the older HERMES 1.2 graphics library or a modern Hermes JavaScript component, so the application name and full file path determine the correct fix.
What this file actually does
The older hermes.dll is described as HERMES 1.2 Dynamic Link Library. It is a Win32 graphics and pixel-format library associated with Christian Nentwich, Mikko Tiihonen, Glenn Fiedler and other contributors. Older software using PTC or OpenPTC could place the file beside its executable.

That legacy file is not normally a Windows component and should not be copied into C:WindowsSystem32. Historical records identify known legacy copies as 32-bit, but that does not mean every file named hermes.dll is the same build.

There is no single universal or latest hermes.dll. The correct copy must come from the exact application build that requested it.

Fix 1: Identify the application that owns hermes.dll
Start with ownership. Do not begin by searching for a replacement DLL.
Check the error message
Note the executable or application named in the error. For example, the failing program might be a game launcher, an older graphics application, an Xbox-related package, or a React Native Windows application.

- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read the Target field.
- Note whether the target is under:
C:Program FilesC:Program Files (x86)- a game library
- a custom application folder
C:Program FilesWindowsApps
A program under Program Files (x86) is commonly 32-bit. That is useful evidence for an older HERMES 1.2 application, but the path alone does not prove which Hermes family is involved.
Search the application folder
If the program still has an installation directory:
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the folder containing the application executable.
- Search that folder for
hermes.dll. - Right-click any result and select Properties.
- Check the Location, Details, and Digital Signatures tabs if available.
A copy beside the program’s executable usually belongs to that application. A copy in an unrelated directory does not prove that it is safe or compatible.
Do not edit files inside WindowsApps manually. Store packages are protected and should be repaired through Windows or the Microsoft Store.
Fix 2: Repair the affected application
Repair is the safest first action because it restores the application’s own files without mixing DLL versions.

Windows 11 and Windows 10 Store or packaged apps
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the application named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If the error remains, return to the same screen and select Reset. Reset can remove local application data, preferences, or sign-in information, so use it after Repair rather than before.
A successful repair usually means the application opens without the hermes.dll message. If the same error appears immediately, continue with the application’s own update or reinstall process.
Traditional desktop software
Some older programs expose repair through Control Panel:
- Press
Windows + R. - Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows if requested.
If no repair option exists, use the program’s official installer or original installation media. Do not select a random DLL from another program to fill the missing file.
Games
Open the game launcher and look for a command named Verify, Verify files, Repair, or Scan and repair. Run it against the affected game, then launch the game again.
The launcher should restore the game’s matching copy of hermes.dll if it is part of that game. If verification reports damaged files but cannot repair them, uninstall the game, restart Windows, and reinstall it through the official launcher.
Fix 3: Reinstall the application cleanly
Use a clean reinstall when Repair fails, the file was deleted, or the application update was interrupted.
- Uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- If it is traditional desktop software, also check Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Download or run the installer from the application’s publisher, official launcher, Microsoft Store, or original media.
- Install the same application again.
- Apply its current updates.
- Start the program before restoring optional modifications, plugins, or custom files.
For a game, use the launcher’s verification function first if it is available. Reinstalling the owning application is the definitive fix when its copy of hermes.dll is missing or mismatched.
Do not copy hermes.dll from another computer unless the file came from the same application build and the publisher confirms that it is appropriate.

Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may quarantine an application file after an update or during a scan. The filename alone cannot determine whether a particular copy is safe.

- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
hermes.dllor the affected application. - Review the detected file path and detection details.
- If the file clearly belongs to the trusted application, follow the security product’s process for submitting it for review or restoring it.
- Repair or reinstall the application afterward.
Restore a quarantined file only when it is clearly from the trusted installation and the security product confirms that it is safe. Do not disable antivirus protection to force a random DLL into the application folder.
If the file is restored and immediately quarantined again, leave it removed and contact the application publisher or security vendor. A clean reinstall is safer than repeatedly restoring the same file.
Fix 5: Resolve a modern Microsoft Store, Xbox, or React Native application
A modern hermes.dll may belong to a JavaScript-based Windows application rather than the historical HERMES 1.2 library.
Check these clues:
- The error names a Store application or Xbox app.
- The path includes
WindowsApps. - The application was built with React Native for Windows.
- The problem began after an application or Gaming Services update.
- The failing file is not beside an old desktop program or game executable.
For a Microsoft Store application:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the affected application.
- Open Advanced options.
- Select Terminate.
- Select Repair.
- Use Reset if Repair fails.
- Open the Microsoft Store.
- Select Library.
- Choose Get updates.
- Start the application again.
For an Xbox application or a game that depends on Gaming Services, update the Xbox app and Windows first. If the Xbox app provides access to Microsoft’s Gaming Services Repair Tool, run that tool and restart Windows afterward.

Do not replace a modern Hermes component with an old 32-bit HERMES 1.2 file. React Native Hermes components must match the application’s bundled framework and package release.
Fix 6: Install a runtime only when the application requires it
A missing dependency can produce the message “The specified module could not be found” even when hermes.dll is present. The missing item may be another native library required by the application.
Check the application’s official requirements, installer log, or support documentation before installing anything. If the publisher specifically requires a Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable, install the architecture named by that application. A 32-bit program generally needs the x86 runtime, while a 64-bit program generally needs the x64 runtime.
Do not assume Visual C++ is the universal fix for the historical HERMES 1.2 library. If the application does not identify that runtime as a requirement, repair the application first.

After installing a required runtime:
- Restart Windows.
- Start the affected application.
- If the same message remains, return to application verification or reinstall it.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use Windows repair commands when other protected Windows files are also failing, Windows Update is damaged, or several unrelated applications report system-file errors. These commands are not a substitute for reinstalling a third-party application.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired corrupted files, restart and test the original program. If both commands complete without resolving the error, the problem is probably inside the third-party application or its dependencies.

Fix 8: Update drivers only when symptoms point to graphics or hardware
A driver update is not the normal remedy for a missing application DLL. Consider it only when the error began with graphics crashes, a display-driver change, device failures, or several games failing at once.
Use Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
You can also expand Sound, video and game controllers or System devices when the application’s documentation identifies a related device.
If Device Manager reports that the best driver is already installed, check Windows Update and the graphics-card manufacturer’s official support channel. Do not install a driver merely because hermes.dll is missing.

Why System32 and regsvr32 are usually wrong
Do not copy a downloaded hermes.dll into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- another program’s directory
System32 is the native system directory on 64-bit Windows, not a universal location for third-party libraries. A 32-bit application may load its private DLL from its own installation folder or through its application environment.
Do not run:
regsvr32 hermes.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no verified basis for treating the historical HERMES library as a self-registering COM server. Running the command may only produce another error and will not restore missing application files.
Downloading a DLL from an unknown source is risky because the file may contain malware, belong to a different Hermes family, use the wrong architecture, or fail to include the dependencies the application actually needs. Use the application publisher, official launcher, Microsoft Store, or original installation media instead.
If reinstalling still does not work
A persistent error after a clean reinstall usually means the problem is not simply a missing file.

Check the following:
- Confirm the executable. Use the error message, shortcut target, or application logs to identify which program is failing.
- Check the full path. Make sure the application is not loading a different
hermes.dllfrom an unexpected directory. - Review Event Viewer. Right-click Start, select Event Viewer, open Windows Logs > Application, and inspect entries created at the failure time.
- Look for the faulting module. The event may identify the executable, a dependency, or a different DLL.
- Check permissions. Confirm that your account can read the application folder and that security software is not blocking it.
- Check Controlled folder access. In Windows Security, open Virus & threat protection > Ransomware protection > Manage ransomware protection and review blocked-app notifications.
- Test a clean user profile. A damaged user profile or application cache can prevent a packaged application from starting.
- Check disk health. If unrelated files are disappearing or becoming corrupted, back up personal data and investigate storage problems.
- Use System Restore only when appropriate. If the failure began immediately after a driver, update, or system change, open Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore and choose a restore point from before the problem.
System Restore does not deliberately replace an application with an unrelated DLL. It rolls back selected system files, drivers, settings, and installed programs according to the restore point.
